And, didn't Bill Bell write the show in Chicago? I would think if the show tapes in California, he'd need to be a little closer to the set on a day to day basis to actually SEE what's going on production-wise. He was most likely the creative EP.

I don't know if any of you saw Y&R's E! True Hollywood Story, but there was an interview with H. Wes Kenney (Y&R's other original EP), who said Bill Bell was heavily involed and had a clear vision of what he wanted the sets to look like, the camera angles to be, the acting technique to be, ect. Needless to say, Bell was the creative force behind everything Y&R came to be. When he lived in Chicago, he would have tapes sent to him and from there he'd make changes, he also frequently flew to LA to observe the studio Y&R is taped in.

Anyway, back to shows I care and know about...

Has there been any news on the All My Children front? I mean, aside from Kate Hall, the writing team B&E are helming is exactly the same as Megan's. Same piss poor dialog writers. Same breakdown/associate heads. That's why there has been nothing fresh, really, from this show. Because the same people are writing this show back when it sucked under McTavish. Save for Patrick, Demorest and Lewis, I wouldn't mind hearing a fresher voice. Most of these people couldn't shine McTavish's shit into gems, so I know they're not really able to do the same for B&E's boring turds.

I mean, hello! Why is Courtney Bugler still there?

I've also heard that Shaughnessy and Scott storgly dislike one another these days, and that probably has to do with Scott's 2001 firing and Shaughnessy's promotion to EP. If you've noticed, Scott didn't come back to Y&R as supervising producer until Shaughnessy was gone.

I love Shaughnessy's style, he was innovative, yet he never changed what Y&R look and feel distinct. He was also British, and they have a whole different way of viewing the soap genre and televison in general, which made his Y&R possibly more appealing than even Scott's, post-Bell era of course.

Bill wrote the show from Chicago ages ago, he and his wife lived (she still does) in an ex-Howard Hughes villa in LA. (Also, Brad Bell's house was featured in a magazine about houses, interior design etc., I don't remember which one.) Every day, Bill Bell was joined in his office in Studio City by Jerry Birn and had conference calls with Kay Alden (Chicago) and Trent Jones (upper New York).

QUOTE (Chris B @ Sep 11 2007, 10:00 AM)
Months before Ed Scott was fired, it was mentioned in SOD that Scott had been pushed out of the control room (replaced with Josh Griffith), so I guess he ran the show day-to-day. Of course the show denied it at the time, but that's obviously what happened.

I think GL was the wrong soap for him since it wasn't a glamourous soap. I understand he didn't manage the budget well, but GL still looked amazing and he got people talking about the show. I think the poor writing is why his tenure is so disliked. If the writing were good I don't think anyone would be complaining.

Conboys production changes with GL were nothing really to write home about. JMO. The lighting was a bit darker, but not in such a flattering way that oh say someone like Ed Scott would do. Vets were back burned, taken off of contract, etc, etc. His taste in Head Writers is horrendous as both GL and Capitol both suffered because of it. Which is where I agree with you there. If the writing was good, I wouldn't detest memories of his time at the helm of GL. I don't think GL saw a subsequent change in production quality until Ellen Wheeler became EP.

Did Jill Lorie Hurst serve as GL’s co-Head Writer sometime around 2002/2003? I know she worked her way up the writing chain when she began as a Writer’s Assistant, but that high? If she did, she knows how to reach for the stars. Whatever that means.

Nope.

Today is a very sad day for me and knowing that Dena is gone doesn't change that. But tomorrow is a different story.......

What was so good about David's style and how was it different from Ed's?

Was David responsible for the red background opening with saxaphone playing? I hated that. LOL
