O.J. book sparks new outrage

By Associated Press | November 16, 2006

In an account his publisher considers a confession and some media executives call revolting, O.J. Simpson plans a book and TV interview to discuss how, hypothetically, he could have killed his ex-wife and her friend.

Two weeks before the book, "If I Did It," goes on sale, scorn was being heaped on Simpson, the publisher, and Fox, which plans to air the Simpson interview in two parts Nov. 27 and 29.

Denise Brown, sister of Simpson's slain ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, lashed out at the publisher for "promoting the wrongdoing of criminals" and commercializing abuse.

Judith Regan, whose ReganBooks imprint is publishing the book, refused to say what Simpson is being paid but said he came to her with the idea. "This is an historic case, and I consider this his confession," Regan told the Associated Press.

The ex-football star was acquitted in 1995 of murdering his former wife and her friend Ron Goldman. He was later found liable for the deaths by in a wrongful-death suit filed by the Goldman family. Simpson has failed to pay the $33.5 million judgment against him in the civil case. His NFL pension and his Florida home cannot legally be seized.

Simpson did not return calls for comment. His attorney, Yale Galanter, said he did not know about the book or the interview until this week. "I did not have anything to do with the negotiations of the book," Galanter said. He said there is "only one chapter that deals with their deaths and that chapter, in my understanding, has a disclaimer that it's complete fiction."

Meanwhile, other publishers and publishing industry observers criticized ReganBooks and Simpson himself.

"This is not about being heard. This is about trying to cash in, in a pathetic way, on some notoriety," said Sara Nelson, editor in chief of Publishers Weekly.

Patricia Schroeder, president of the American Association of Publishers, described the developments as sickening. "But I think it's going to stir an awful lot of debate and make the culture take a real look at itself, and that may not be unhealthy."

OJ is just a vial person. Instead of just doing his own thing, he keeps stirring the pot, creating more pain for Nicole's family as well as the Goldman family.

It's sick. I hope nobody is stupid enough to buy this book.

Actually I hope people do buy his book. That way maybe Ron Goldman's family and The Brown's can have the money. I believe and I could be wrong that they haven't seen a cent because all the money won in the civil suit is pension money and pension money you can't access for civil suits. But don't quote me, I am not a lawyer, just something I heard when this first happened

I do recall something like that....OJ won't make any money off this book; the families will get every dime he makes...and to be honest, they deserve it far more than he does. He's still trying cash off of something that was a tragedy to two families.

I watched Larry King Live with Ron Goldman's dad and sis and they both said they havent seen one penny from OJ and that he is not willingly going to fork over anything if he doesnt have to. Ron's sister said sarcastically he probably will have this money that he is making from this book sent over through a secret account in the Bahama's.

I feel so bad for these 2 families, anybody who has an open mind knows OJ killed Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman, and its sad that OJ got away with it. Does he not even care about his children, what if they read the book OJ is putting out, how he might have killed their own mother!? How sick and twisted is this man? I am outraged over this!

The man is a sicko. Who the hell hypotethically confesses to two brutal murders without their sanity being questioned? He's just rubbing it in that he got away with murder, but O.J. will have to atone one day. Hell's waiting for him.

TMZ:

Judith Regan isthisclose to nailing herself on a cross. The embattled publisher, who is taking some nuclear heat for publishing the O.J. Simpson book, "If I Did It," went on her Sirius radio show today to defend her vilified actions. With her producer, Howie, pumping her up, Regan accused the media of just being jealous. Oh yeah, we wish we could support killers too!

It's shocking how disorganized they are in their thinking ... in terms of the media," Regan opined. "They literally invented this notion that I paid him $3.5 million, which I did not."

No, she says, she "contracted with a third party for the rights."

And there's this dish on Judith: Sources tell TMZ that after she saw "The Devil Wears Prada," she wanted to become the Meryl Streep character. In fact, we're told she adopted the habit of walking into her office and flinging her bag and coat onto her assistant's desk -- an assistant, sources say, Regan referred to as "hot." A Regan rep adds: "I never saw her do that."

WTF cares who gets the money off this book? Whether O.J. gets the money or the victims' families, it's still SICK that money is being made out of such a crime. If one of my family members was murdered and the murderer wrote a book saying what would have happened had he did it, even if the money made off of the book went to my family, I wouldn't even consider touching a penny.

The justice system is insanely corrupt in Canada and the U.S. Just yesterday, some teen in my city charged with stabbing and killing another teen was released in his grandparent's care. Needless to say, the family is outraged and so is the general public. It's amazing how corporate fraud can get someone in jail just like that while second-degree murder doesn't necessarily mean that the perpetrator does time. <_<
