August 23, 200619 yr Member NEW YORK (Reuters) - Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures unit is ending its 14-year relationship with Tom Cruise's film production company because of the actor's offscreen behavior, the company's chairman said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Sumner Redstone, Viacom chairman, said the behavior of the star of the "Mission: Impossible" series and "Top Gun" was unacceptable to the company, according to the Wall Street Journal story e-mailed to reporters. Cruise, one of Hollywood's biggest stars, has been known more recently for his antics on U.S. television talk shows, including jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey's couch to declare his love for Katie Holmes and criticizing the use of antidepressant drugs. "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal," Redstone was quoted as saying in the Wall Street Journal. "His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount." Cruise's representatives and officials from Viacom and Paramount did not have any immediate comment on the report.
August 23, 200619 yr Member Tom's behavior I believe is slowly burning bridges with those he was so close with when he started out in the movie industry. Steven Spielsburg wasn't all that cool with Tom, especially after his attack/rant on the Today Show with Matt Laur. It really doesn't matter how many publicity stunts he pulls off, people are still going to remember him as the bumbling moron that jumped the heck out of Oprah's couch, and the one that slammed folks for using medication to cope with their post -partum depression. Oh, and now he wants to suddenly give everyone a "first" glimpse at baby Suri. He talks about wanting to keep her out of the media's scrutiny, but he's using her to pump up his name and be slashed on some more magazine covers. By the time they get around to showing us Suri, she'll be graduating from college.
August 23, 200619 yr Member Hmmm......Tom hasn't jumped on any couches since last year. They're about a year too late on this move.

They may be late regarding the couch incident, but Paramount most likely are tired of some of his other antics....From what I understood, during the time that Mission Impossible 3 was coming out, it was said that Tom was losing a majority of female fans.. I'm not saying that this is the reason why he was dropped; but I doubt that they are dropping him because of the Oprah 'thang'..
August 23, 200619 yr Member Paramount had to wait until they figured out how much money they lost thanks to that cult-spouting, furniture-raping, cradle-robbing nutjob.
August 23, 200619 yr Member Well I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I don't respect Scientology or anything Tom Cruise stands for, really. On the other hand, I'd hate to think he is being DISCRIMINATED against due to his faux-religious/philosophical views and unique behaviors.
August 23, 200619 yr Member Hmmm......Tom hasn't jumped on any couches since last year. They're about a year too late on this move. ITA. Tom vrs. Matt Lauer, Tom vrs. Brooke Shields, Tom vrs. Drugs/History of Psychology, Scientologist Tom and Oprah Tom happened last year. He's been "normal" this year.
August 23, 200619 yr Member Um, really? He's been "normal" this year? What about shielding Katie from the public? What about the days if not WEEKS of silence he forced on Katie after having the baby? What about Suri, as an entity? I'd say he's been pretty darn oddball this year, too!
August 23, 200619 yr Member Regardless if he's been normal or not, they decided not to renew a contract, so there was obvious waiting involved.

IMO, I don't think Paramount gives a crap about all his couch jumping and shenanagans with Matt Lauer and Brooke Shields. They cut ties with him because MI:3 didn't produce enough money. I personally think it's hilarious!
