Timberlake backtracks after criticizing Hicks

Representative says singer ‘has tremendous affection’ for Idol

Updated: 3:42 p.m. CT Aug 17, 2006

NEW YORK - Justin Timberlake backtracked from criticism of “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks after telling Fashion Rocks magazine the 29-year-old soul singer “can’t carry a tune in a bucket.”

“I have a strange relationship with that show,” Timberlake tells the magazine in an interview. “I despise it, and yet I’m completely fascinated.”

“The guy who won — people think he looks so normal, and he’s so sweet, and he’s so earnest, but he can’t carry a tune in a bucket. Do you realize how much pressure it is to put on somebody all of a sudden?”

Timberlake, a member of boy band ’N Sync who is now pursuing a solo career, also said: “If he has any skeletons whatsoever; if, God forbid, he’s gay, and all these people in Mississippi who voted for him are like, ‘Oh, my God, I voted for a queer!’ It’s just too much pressure.”

Liz Morentin, a representative for Hicks’ record label, RCA, declined to comment Thursday.

Ken Sunshine, Timberlake’s representative, said the 25-year-old singer’s comments “were taken completely out of context.”

“He has tremendous affection for Taylor Hicks’ success,” Sunshine told The Associated Press on Thursday. “He would never say anything that personal about somebody he’s never met. He only wishes him the best.”

Timberlake’s second solo album, “FutureSex/LoveSounds,” is set for release Sept. 12. “Sexyback,” his first single from the CD, began playing on U.S. radio outlets last month.

“I wanted (the album) to look to a time when everything was really sexy,” he says. “Maybe everybody was coked up, but who cares? It was hot. It was all about sex.”

Whenever folks draw attention to themselves are made to look like morons for sticking their foot in their mouth, they hurry up and have their reps saying "Oh that was taking completely out of context." Whatever, if JT said it, he said it and meant what he said; now he looks like an even bigger fool for having his reps trying to take it back.

That just makes me hate this guy even more. What a stupid thing to say. Publicity whore.

I am from the south, I wouldnt care either way if Hicks did the sucky sucky.

But that's because you're bi, Kirk, so you wouldn't care. I agree that it's silly to speculate but everyone is guilty of it. Maybe not everyone hates on those who are gay or bi but pretty much EVERYONE cares. I care, too. I can't explain why but it's just interesting. Come on, who doesn't want to know if the rumors about Hugh Jackman and the ones about certain soap stars are true? Perhaps it comes from the fact that, in some sense, it gives 'regular people' the delusion that they're that closer to bedding such celebrity, who knows the reason, but people do care about these things. And that's never going to change!

Why does Justin even care? He's not that great of a singer himself. He acts like a Michael Jackson-wannabe, and thinks he's so tough b/c of that fisaco at the Superbowl. Justin, it happened years ago. Nobody cares!

Remember when he had a nasty blonde afro and sang all those sucky songs w/ NSYNC? He's the last person to criticize other singers IMO.

When they found out about the fact that he was gay and the sex scandal-him going on online gay hookup sites and getting sex without protecting himself, and the pics of him were in Star magazine- the fans wanted their money back and wanted to sue AI for misleading them about Clay not being heterosexual. I know some were mad that he was gay, and some were more mad at AI for "misleading" them.

    • Looking at those totals it seems most contract actors are on a 1 or 2 week average guarantee. I assume contracts are still operating on 13 week cycles so you would have to know the particular actors contract starting date to work out their guarantee. The question remains as to what actors listed as contract are actually recurring? Bryton ?
    • Yep, that scene was at the conclusion of the Derek Thurston vs George Packard storyline, when Kay decided neither of them should run Chancellor.  By the time she put Victor in charge, Victor had been on the show for months & months with his Rolls Royce, his ranch, and Newman Enterprises.  SONY released some Y&R "trivia cards" in the late 1980s, and one of the questions was "who brought Victor Newman to Genoa City?" The answer on the back of the card is "Kay Thurston, to run Chancellor Industries", and it's a wrong answer lol.
    • I think someone said it did exist, but I can't remember.
    • The bit with the scarf reminds me of the fabled stuffed animal scene with Rick and Phillip. (That wasn't debunked, was it?)
    • Ohh, interesting. I instantly gravitated towards her in that episode. Of course I'm already hooked and want to know why she was trying to poison that older lady, but then how did the older lady know to switch the mugs so Susan drank her own poison...  but I have too many timelines I'm watching right now haha.  Oh, Bolger is definitely hot. I didn't realize he was on GL haha. I knew him from OLTL and other primetime stuff.
    • This is a effin shame. Eff Trump and eff the bastards that enable him.
    • I 100% agree but I think this is due to how the show is structured. It's a one family show which means there are no people in her age range that could be used as friends or contemporaries of her. The show definitely needs a second main family. I am glad someone finally said this. Especially now that the cast is gelling in their roles, he stands out like a sore thumb. No energy, no chemistry with anybody. He is just there.  I thought that was odd as well! The previous scene would've worked better as a tag for the credits.
    • That's the one and only Carrie Nye (Mrs. Dick Cavett) as Susan Piper, a deadly realtor. I don't want to spoil a lot if you ever want to see those episodes. She returns as another character in 2003. I think Grant has aged well and he always did a good job at being ripped without going too far, but he was never entirely my cup of tea either. I did think John Bolger was hot.
    • Totally agree. KKL looks great! It makes the Widge groveling so bizarre. Brooke needs to leave FC and with $B's/Liam's funding launch a rival fashion house with Hope, Rick, Katie and a secret designer. The best scenario is that Rick has been absent because he's been with very much alive C2, who is revealed on the runway as the secret designer. It'll never happen because B&B is comfortable just focusing on FC and the Forresters Marones v. Logans. But it'd been so much more interesting if the Spencers/Logans united.
