Tonja Walker (Alex) recently did a livestream on YouTube inviting fans to ask whatever they want - no topic was offlimits. Politics did come up and Tonja confirmed she is a Trump supporter - was originally going to back RFK Jr. but since he has dropped out, she has gone back to Trump

Ofc she is but that’s alright. She is still a kind person and I mean she was a mob wife on OLTL. Makes sense lol

Re: How times have changed. You're right about that, but even back in the early days, main characters were usually written off their respective shows once they did something really terrible (like murder, stalking or kidnapping). The bad guys simply needed to be punished. I think at one point one of the producers of the RTL soaps said that they can't have a murderer walking freely around in town.

It was mostly recurring or guest characters who turned out to be psychopaths. Compared to US soaps, rape or sexual assault is a trope that has rarely been used on any German soap (current or defunct), and when it happened, the perpetrator (male or female) was a guest character. Also, most deaths occured due to accidents and not because characters were murdered. If someone was indeed murdered, it was a huge shock (for example, when Crazy Auntie Eva killed poor Lizzie, put her in a suitcase, and dragged her body through the woods, leaving behind a trail of blood – now that was a shocking storyline back in 1996).

Main characters were usually not allowed to cross a certain moral border, only if they were on their way out. For example, on GZSZ, Barbara was sent to prison after she had kidnapped baby Antonia. Then she came back, tried to kill her sister Sonja, and had to flee the country in the back of a truck. Anna went from being an anorexic supermodel to a complete loon who murdered her therapist because of her split personality. She was institutionalized and never mentioned again. Inka went bananas at school, shot Elisabeth and killed Chris, and was arrested, never to be seen again. When the truth about Sonja faking Flo's death came to light, Sonja was killed in an explosion. On UU, Gideon committed suicide after gunning down Rebecca. Viktor Falkenberg was killed by a plane rotor. (I loved all of these characters, though.)

There were only a few cases where characters were redeemed, like André on GZSZ who was a complete nutcase in the beginning (pushing Lilo down a stairway, burying Elisabeth alive and blackmailing various characters), only to become a comic relief and eventually being at peace with everybody.

However, psychological violence was clearly allowed – for example, on GZSZ, Gerner verbally abused Barbara when she was an alcoholic. Sonja publically accused Gerner of molesting children. On UU, Viktor Falkenberg did horrible things to his wife Claudia. When it came to physical violence, most villains had henchmen that did dirty work for them.

I never really watched VL back in the day (I only remember a lot of actors / characters and probably the most memorable storylines), but Tanja was clearly an outlier. She was an ice-cold murderer and was never really punished for her various crimes – she was always one step ahead of everyone. However, while she remained a menace until the end of the show, the writers also gradually softened her by bringing in her mother, exploring her backstory and having her start her own family. But that was obviously in the later years.

Andre Holms from Gzsz was hilarious., Tanja from VL and Rolf from Unter Uns are the only ones that had some legend status that they got away with murder and being kept on the show. I agree VL tried to soften Tanja while they never made any excuses for Rolf. He was a psycho and they never played it down.

Only other character that had a few runs while having killed some was Barbara von Heidenberg from Sturm der Liebe!

I get that villains have to end at some point before it’s getting ridiculous (yes I’m looking mostly at the Days of our lives villains at this point)

The only villain that became a soap legend in Germany and got away with all the bs was Ansgar von Lahnstein from VL. He slapped his wife Natalie and pulled so many stunts yet people still love him and root for his character. But i definitely sided with him. His father is a hypocrite. He slept with a married women (Elisabeth).. his son (Leonard) stole his girl (Cecile) and his daughter (Carla) lied to him for years about being gay yet he excused everything of them while giving Ansgar so much sheet even though he worked his butt off for the family and the company. I don’t excuse some stuff but they tried doing Ansgar dirty but we know he was and is still the best character from German tv.

I miss Jo Gerner form GZSZ. I mean the real one who went head to head with his brother (Patrick).. Who nearly drove Katja Into a psychiatric clinic while letting a “dead” Biedermann appear to him. Being verbally abusive to Barbara. Letting everyone believe that Johanna was dead and keeping Leon locked up etc. List goes on and on. When I watch him with Yvonne and her kids and the way they talk to him and the way they behave overall I can’t believe Gerner is taking that. I know people can grow and stuff BUT the REAL Gerner would never let them treat him like this. He would’ve given them hell. Especially 2 years ago when Gerner was on the run from Linostrami and Yvonne was calling the cops on him. Real gerner would not have given her another chance lol he became weak

1996 was overall such a strong year for Gzsz with the cast overhaul and the storylines. Crazy auntie Eva who wanted Charlie’s money.. Heiko wrongly accused of murder of Tina’s ex boyfriend and toyboy. The writers really outdone themselves even with the new characters

Unter Uns is doing returned characters no favor.. Killing off Corinna… Jennifer’s return with her shady past and ending up with RUFUS out of all people.. bringing back Charlotte to get bumped off..

At least it brought us Mars back to the show.

i was at the fan event of UU on August 12th and got to meet the cast and some old stars that were there for the 30th anniversary.. only two not being there this year were Paco and Sina :(

but at least I got to meet my all time favorite Holger Franke as Wolfgang Weigel and Petra Blossey as Irene Weigel. Legendary Stefan Franz as Rolf was there..Mother and daughter from the 90’s Claudia neidig as Claudia Falkenberg and Vanessa Glinka as Alexa Falkenberg. (I did kinda hit on her lol). Now I met all women from the Falkenbergs coz I got to meet Verena Zimmermann (Jessica Falkenberg but more known for playing Nicola on verbotene liebe)

That Cook from 2011-2013 who hit his girlfriend was there, Stefan bockelmann as malte and that actress that played his wife..

Lilly was there .. it was such a great event.

miriam Lahnstein from verbotene liebe was so different from what I expected live at that event. She is so warm and wholesome and friendly. I said to her that I like her character on unter uns but it’s no Tanja !
she replied: you can’t play a character like Tania anymore coz the bad guys always have to get caught and lose and that’s not Tania ! She kinda implied how soft this era became lol

The last of the Cunninghams, a staple of the show from the first episode.

At least we still have Mercedes, Ste, and Cleo...

I wish they would finally get rid of Mercedes and free the budget ! I mean they gave her like the same story 7 damn times..

  5. @Aback yeah I remember that. 😂

there was another soap mentioned Un si grand soleil.. they have started to upload the full first year/season on YouTube and I have watched every episode so far.

if u haven’t tried it u should. No spoiler but there are some big twists and turns and I couldn’t believe that this was meant to be a soap opera.

DnA and ici are great. But DNA wouldn’t be my number 1 pick out of them. I prefer ici and plus belle la vie (especially the early years and since that serial killer storyline they had)

I mean, I'm not hurting by this exit... but I also think cutting a twenty-year veteran is insane. Makes me feel like no one else is safe on that set.

I mean it’s the same show and still the same guy in charge that thought he could get rid of GF (Laura) again in 2018… NO ONE is safe lol

Im shocked considering that her sisters are in the middle of a big story. But her character has been dead weight for like the last decade

It was a stupid move to kill Sam off. With 21 years on the show, she is a legacy character. If the powers that be and Kelly Monaco couldn't come to terms, they should've just recast with Lindsay Hartley.   Maybe the day she found out was before the episode(s) last week when Lindsay Hartley returned as Sam.

Which is what I don’t get. They Have Lindsay on speed dial and could’ve easily given her that character

@AMCOLTLLover where have you been able to watch the whole show, if I may?

@FrenchFan although you're not watching, aren't you just amazed at their production values? I'd love to know what their business model is and why it can't apply to US soaps 😢

I downloaded some episodes from various sources but since 2022 I’m watching them on TF1 directly with a VPN and a free account. I could pay for TF1+ and watch in advance but I don’t want to. Lol they have like every year on there..

DNA was so well Written in the beginning and It’s still great and I love the cast but I find myself more drawn to the spin off even though they from the spin off are kinda milking the gay trope tbh.

Yes I do.. it’s such an entertaining soap.
U can tell that they in France really got back into their soap opera game!

The story revolves around the inhabitants of the town of Sète , on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Etang de Thau . Their lives are punctuated by family rivalries, romances and scenes of daily life, but also by intrigues mixing police investigations, secrets and betrayals.

they have 1755 episodes. I’m currently on 1747..

This show even got a spin - off: Ici tout commence (which will celebrate their 1000th episode in like 2-3 weeks if I’m not mistaken. Last I watched was episode 982.. But they must be at 986.

To boost the evening, TF1 decided to try a hitherto unique formula: daily pre-evening fiction. Launched in summer, it responds to public demand, according to Marie Guillaumond, artistic director of French fiction at TF1.
TF1 also brought back a soap
Opera that started in 2004 and ended in 2022 on another network : Plus belle la vie!

I am amazed at how much I had forgotten from this time, like the Hutch and Rose romance.  When the Kelly's were first introduced on GH, I was not sure what to think about them   I would wondered if they were a "Ryan's Hope" ripoff.

I knew that Noah and Bobbie were involved, but I seem to remember him more being paired with Tiffany.

I was surprised that through the years, they never recast Anne Logan, who, though could be an annoying goody-two-shoes, she was still related to Lucille and Audrey, so she could have been useful for keeping the Hardy's interesting.

I was glad we never saw or heard from Anne Logan again and I’m still annoyed that I still have her around :( :)

maybe Noah and Tiffany will be a thing soon but now Bobbie and Noah are about to break up as it seems and he is befriending Anne.

Bobbie and Noah were together for quite the while tbh. He joined late March 81 and they were seeing each other right from April/may up to October where I am now

Victor kidnapping Jack, replacing him with a double, who slept with an unknowing Phyllis.

Not only inappropriate but ridiculous and disgusting especially when Victor was forgiven and he and Jack remained civil (and at times friendly)

I’m currently on those episodes.. Not that far with the sleeping part (but I did watched that episode when it aired)… Holy sheeeet. That Victor got away with that is just ridiculous…

Even though Chelsea and Adam (especially Justin) were one of my top 5 couples form YR during the last 20 years the story was inappropriate. He stalked her for months as Gabe Bingham and made her fall for Gabe.. He was constantly bringing up Adam.. Adam here and Adam there and Adam blah. I can’t believe Chelsea was that dumb not be a little bit confused by it or to caught on to him sooner. And all we got was Adam talking to the portrait of Victor and her walking in. LOL

Now I’m on October 8th and finished September and the first week of October 1981.

FINALLY the ice princess storyline is over. The climax of that story was well done and Luke pretending to understand Mikkos‘s point of view before overthrowing him.
We lost Alexandria and Tony Cassadine :(
I was really hyped about Mikkos ending and it was really well done.
It was great that they returned to the normal flow of the show and put human story’s back in front like Mike and his grandma.. She just died :(

AND YEEES Monica and Alan are front burner again and Monica gets nasty. Susan gets visits from Monica, Edward and Lila and seems to lose faith here in that thing with Alan and if she would’ve been smart she would’ve run as fast as she could lmao

We finally got rid of Hutch! I still can’t believe they wasted him for like the last 5 months just to give him finally a decent story for his last few weeks. They could’ve done so much more with the Hutch and Rose Lovestory. It felt a bit rushed but it was still a good one. What I really liked was that Heather came in clutch and covered for Rose. it was so amazing to see Heather being a good support and a real friend for Rose after everything she did for her!

Anne got a dear John latter from Jeff who just dumped her LOL

The only character I hate is Noah Drake! I know, I know. Women are crazy about him and he is a fan favorite but come on. I saw some YouTube comments etc. and how annoying Bobbie was and that she should’ve given into Noah. But that dude was constantly pressuring her to get Bobbie into his bed. People complained about her obsession with Luke.. But can we talk about that her concerns were valid? Luke was on a damn island and got nearly killed and last year he was on the run from Frank Smith.. So of course she is worried sick about her brother… They both had a rough childhood and she was a teen prostitute. Then she lost Scotty and Roy and just started to open up to Noah and all he cared about was her body. FFS! And everytime they got into an argument he ran to other women (Stacey.. Anne Logan now.. HE even said to Anne that he’s not ready to commit).. But HE wants Bobbie to give up her principles and moral grounds to open up her legs? I really hate him. Thank god Bobbie didn’t gave into him. My girl Barbara Jean deserved so much better than this fool. This is why I support women and them saying No! A NO is a NO! And not constantly pressuring her to finally get her into bed. Noah really lost me tbh.

Now It's a Son Letting Gena Rowlands Shine

    •
    • By Margy Rochlin

THERE IS SOMETHING familiar, almost mythic, about the sight of Gena Rowlands striding up the hallway of her Hollywood Hills residence. Her presence in this narrow, photograph-lined corridor, as well as the living room, staircase and bedrooms, has been captured in almost every film that Ms. Rowlands's husband, John Cassavetes, wrote and directed and she starred in.

In fact, Mr. Cassavetes, who died in 1989, so often used his home as a movie set that it has become part of independent film lore how the sleepy-eyed Cassavetes family would regularly begin their mornings by picking their way to the breakfast table through a forest of cameras, light stands and electrical equipment. This white two-story dwelling is also considered historic because the couple relied upon it to help finance Mr. Cassavetes's messy emotional dramas, mortgaging the property ''endlessly,'' says Ms. Rowlands, laughing.

    ''Endlessly,'' she repeats.

It has been 12 years since these rooms served as base camp to a film crew. But spend a few hours with Ms. Rowlands in her wood-paneled den with the glass-topped coffee table and the stack of Christmas catalogues, and you'll see she is hardly alone. A pair of middle-aged assistants are scuttling around her home office. And Ms. Rowlands's youngest daughter, Zoe, who is 26, barefoot and in faded sweats, will make a cameo appearance. (''I'm sorry,'' Zoe apologizes as she is spotted creeping with exaggerated stealth toward the bar refrigerator. ''I really want a Diet Coke.'' Another daughter, Xan, is 31 and a singer.) Still, compared with the bustle of the old days, the house must feel practically deserted.

This month, in her latest film, ''Unhook the Stars,'' the 66-year-old Ms. Rowlands portrays a character who is struggling to sort out what to do about a life that has literally been de-populated. Her character, Mildred, is an ordinary suburban widow who can't bear the isolation consigned to most women who are no longer needed by their offspring and no longer in possession of a spouse. Her punkish, slatternly neighbor (Marisa Tomei) takes one look at the way Mildred's half-smile is set at eager-to-please and employs her as the no-pay baby sitter of her young son (Jake Lloyd).

The rest of ''Unhook the Stars'' is about the friendship between the older housewife and the little boy, and how the connection opens up both of their worlds. The film, which opened on Friday, has not always fared as well as its star, who has received glowing notices for her performance.

Although one could point out that this isn't the first time in Ms. Rowlands's 38-year movie career that she has been cast as a parental type, mostly she has portrayed rather questionable Mom figures -- the gun-wielding tough gal in ''Gloria'' or the full-blown fruitcake of ''A Woman Under the Influence,'' two films that won her Academy Award nominations. (In the 1968 film ''Faces,'' she had one of her decidedly non-mom roles.) In the end, it took Ms. Rowlands's own son, the 37-year-old Nick Cassavetes, to showcase her as a skilled nurturer. Mr. Cassavetes not only directed ''Unhook the Stars'' and wrote it with Helen Caldwell but somehow had faith that he and his mother could team up for his behind-the-camera debut and not have things dissolve into an Oedipal disaster.

''Films are always a crap shoot,'' admits Mr. Cassavetes, whose emergence as a director has surprised those who know him better as the romantic lead in erotic B-movies like ''Sins of Desire,'' also starring Tanya Roberts, a former Charlie's Angel. ''But however great an actress she is, Gena is an even more amazing person. There will always be relatives to whom you will never not be the kid who picked his nose or did something stupid. But Gena never puts that on you. She took me and the project very seriously.''

The two learned each other's work habits on the job. Ms. Rowlands got used to being addressed as Mom by a son who had always preferred to call her by her first name. Mr. Cassavetes learned to do things like gently remind his world-class actress mother that he didn't share his father's fondness for occasional improvisation.

''He said: 'Um, Mom? Would you like to see the lines?' '' Ms. Rowlands says. ''And I said: 'Uh, no. Would you like to hear the lines?' And he said, 'Yeah, why not give them a shot?' So I did.''

It is an underlying premise of ''Unhook the Stars,'' that as is often the case in life, tiny fears are what keep people apart and simple gestures are what bring them together. Maybe that's why Ms. Rowlands seems to go out of her way to disarm her co-stars, many of whom quake at the notion of working with a leading lady who is regarded as one of the finest of her generation.

''Yeah, I was nervous and excited,'' says Ms. Tomei, whose fears were partly alleviated by what Ms. Rowlands wore the day Ms. Tomei arrived at the Salt Lake City location. ''She was wearing a little baseball cap and matching uniform,'' Ms. Tomei says. ''She came over and gave me this big hug. And we just started talking. Her whole modus operandi is to make the best film possible, and what that comes out of is people sharing passion for the film.''

Unfortunately, it takes more than Ms. Rowlands's supreme professionalism to make that happen. In the seven years since her husband died of cirrhosis of the liver, few film makers have seemed to know exactly what to do with her. The director Jim Jarmusch shrewdly positioned Ms. Rowlands as a brassy casting director in his 1991 picture ''Night on Earth.'' But in Lasse Hallstrom's ''Once Around'' (1991) and ''Something to Talk About'' (1995), Ms. Rowlands hovered on the edges of the story, there to lecture or console her troubled brood, then disappear back into the shadows. And Linda Yellen's ''Parallel Lives'' (1994) managed to dither away not only Ms. Rowlands's capacious talents but also those of Ben Gazzara, who also starred in many of Mr. Cassavetes's personal projects.

''It's hard,'' says Ms. Rowlands, who prepares for each job meticulously, mulling over motivation and appearance, poring over the script until it tatters. ''But you can't always have it your own way. And God knows I've had a lot of it. You still work the same; you prepare the same. And it's an interesting discipline, really, to see if the way you prepare still holds up. I always try to find something that I've never done. Like the light comedy scene in 'Something to Talk About.' I'd never done light comedy before.''

But there is scant dramatic territory where she hasn't staked her claim. The daughter of a state senator and amateur artist, the Wisconsin-born Ms. Rowlands got her first real break in 1956, playing opposite Edward G. Robinson in Paddy Chayefsky's play ''Middle of the Night.'' But it was her turn at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts that is considered more pivotal by Ms. Rowlands's fans. After delivering her final lines in something called ''Dangerous Corners,'' she found herself backstage, being asked out on a date by an audience member. Four months later, the aspiring actor and the leggy blond ingenue were married.

''John wasn't shy'' is Ms. Rowlands's concise deconstruction of the whirlwind courtship.

While Ms. Rowlands has always been a hot property in cinema, television and on the stage, nothing has compared to the intensity of her collaborations with Mr. Cassavetes. In script after script, he featured Ms. Rowlands as the psychologically troubled linchpin around whom members of his unofficial ensemble company -- Mr. Gazzara, Peter Falk, Seymour Cassell -- fluttered with macho confusion.

With each outing, Mr. Cassavetes gave his wife the opportunity that few cool movie beauties are afforded: to be as physical as any comic sidekick, routinely celebrated when she forsook vanity in favor of screwing her lipsticky mouth sideways or collapsing face down on the floor.

''He was an author who was ahead of his time,'' says Ms. Rowlands, who willingly proffers anecdotes about Mr. Cassavetes but seems disinclined to answer direct questions about him. Will she share what she misses most about their heyday?

''No,'' Ms. Rowlands replies, with a smile that is tight with grief.

WHEN SHE AGREED TO do ''Night on Earth,'' Mr. Jarmusch was unaware that Ms. Rowlands, who stuck to television and stage appearances following her husband's demise, had chosen to make his movie when she was still somewhat vulnerable. Upon reflection, though, Mr. Jarmusch says there were obvious clues.

''I found myself getting these really touching phone calls from Ben Gazzara, Seymour Cassell and Peter Falk,'' says Mr. Jarmusch, who now thinks of Ms. Rowlands as the center of a huge, extended clan made up of her children, other blood relations and guys who palled around with Mr. Cassavetes. ''It was like they were her three brothers, just checking up on her, seeing how she was doing. Like, Peter Falk, who I have still never even met, would call and say: 'Jarmusch? It's Falk. How's Gena? Everything good?' ''

These days, it appears that filmgoers are in the ecstatic throes of Rowlands-mania. Several weeks ago, in Los Angeles, the A.F.I. Fest presented a special ''Tribute to Gena Rowlands'' event on its eclectic roster. Sharon Stone's recent announcement of her intention to star in the remake of ''Gloria'' (Ms. Rowlands's 1980 film, directed by her husband) made it to the front page of Daily Variety.

And on Dec. 6, the Anthology Film Archive on the Lower East Side of Manhattan will kick off a Gena Rowlands retrospective, offering 10 consecutive dates on which anyone with $7 can have the pleasure of her mysterious brown eyes beaming down from the big screen.

One unlikely to purchase a ticket would be the former New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael, who occasionally managed to dredge up compliments for Ms. Rowlands's acting but regularly trashed Mr. Cassavetes's oeuvre with lines like ''he prolongs shots to the point of embarrassment (and beyond).''

''It was a personal thing between her and John,'' Ms. Rowlands says. ''She didn't like him, didn't like the work.''

Ms. Rowlands says the closest she ever came to meeting Ms. Kael was at a party they both attended.

''She sent someone over, but I didn't want to meet her,'' Ms. Rowlands adds, suddenly transforming from an elegantly-appointed doyenne into one of her hotheaded film counterparts. Then she laughs, her eyebrows arching naughtily. ''I mean, I knew I'd just say something very bad, so what was the point?''
