I always laughed when JT would talk about growing up listening to soul music. Where? Backstage at the Mickey Mouse Club? He is as authentically soulful as Cheesecake Factory's jambalaya

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
I think the problem with David's SORASing on Days was similar to the problem of SORASing Jamey on AW, both were the sons of ambitious women with large personalities, but they were a bit of a drip. David should have been a younger male Julie, covetous, striving, and a social climber. Instead he was a little bit troublesome, but easily manipulated, and not very enterprising. I wanted a David that grew up repeating the mistakes of his mother. The loss of his father and the unstable stepfather relationships of his youth were a perfect breeding ground for the feelings of envy that drove Julie as a teen. So, I wanted her to be more of a mentor to David, rather than judgemental of his romantic interests. Then, Hope's rejection of Julie would have made more sense and seem motivated by her rivalry with David, as opposed to suddenly hating Julie and wanting Doug for herself.

General Hospital January 2022 Discussion Thread
I know they write these stories as cautionary tales for the prototypical soap viewing moms at home who still watch linear cable. But, in reality, I don't think there are many sites in 2022 where an anonymous person can upload video of people having sex without their consent to being filmed. Also, Chase hasn't been able to work for months at a time since he was poisoned last summer. How can he afford health care (or rent)? One assumes that if he was suspended from the police force, he would not be paid nor would he get benefits.

Janet Jackson Appreciation Thread
I credit Janet for dealing with the press in a way that laid the groundwork for other female black performers like Beyonce and Kerry Washington. She never gave interviews about her personal life. So, there was always a lot of speculation and rumor, but she only spoke to the press to promote her music. I always thought it was nuts that we knew the names of all of Katherine Hiegl's kids, when she was the second tier star of a few seasons of Grey's, but I could not name Kerry Washington's husband, nor tell you how many kids she has had. Janet was rich, popular, and powerful enough that she didn't need to release photos of her weddings or her kid. There is something very respectable about that. She knew instinctively about how the mainstream press would misuse the personal life stories of black women that made her an interesting model for how generations of women after her worked with the media. In the end, sadly, she was correct because she lost her career for less than what white performers like Madonna and Cher had already done. So, why let the press into your life if they're only going to mistreat you later?

Primetime Soaps
No disrespect to Mr Humperdink, just to the lack of creativity in the writer's room BTW isn't odd that Michelle Phillips of the groovy 60's peace band The Mamma's and The Papa's and the shiska goddess in The California Kid kept getting cast as bitchy vixens on Hotel, 90210, and Knots Landing? I wonder what casting agents saw in her performance of California Dreamin' or Up Up and Away that inspired them to hire her for those parts?

Primetime Soaps
All About Eve is one of my all time favorite movies, so I appreciated the irony of Anne Baxter taking over the role from Bette Davis. It is a shame that they made Anne so benevolent, because one her strengths in All About Eve was being able to switch on and off between kind and evil. However, the setting was ill-suited for plots. By its nature people don't stay in a hotel for long periods of time, and by the 80s, most tourists would dine and explore outside of the confines of the hotel. So, they had to contrive reasons for the action to take place in the lobby or at the cafe. There were only so many jewel thieves and con artists that could visit a hotel before it would get a bad rep amongst travelers. I mean what would tripadvisor say about these two episodes? Ep 08 - A convention of racial supremacists try to practice their policy at the St. Gregory Ep15 - A bar mitzvah celebration at the hotel nearly turns to tragedy when the father of the boy spies a concentration camp survivor who was responsible for the death of thousands of Jews and wants to take vengeance into his own hands. And they had to repeat plots even in the first season Ep9 - Hillary (Pat Klous) is shattered when a vacation romance at Puerto Vallarta turns into sexual blackmail, Ep 22 - A former Queen of racy films (Sally Kellerman) who is now a successful business executive is threatened with extortion by a man from her past And there was a lot of drug/alcohol stories Ep 14 - a law student (Timothy Patrick Murphy) discovers his mother (Adrienne Barbeau) has become dependent upon drugs. Ep 19 - a former singer (Engelbert Humperdinck) with a drug dependency makes a comeback at the St. Gregory

I wasn't thinking Melaswen, but rather the island that the cast got lost on when the plane for Anna's fashion show crashed when Roman died, or Cruise of Deception where Hope got "killed" by Ernesto Toscano, Isabella's (stepfather?, he thought he was her father, but actually Victor was her bio-dad and found out on the cruise) aka (Brady's step-grandfather)

Days of Our Lives: January 2022 Discussion Thread
I think what I object to is the internalized homophobia that requires that there is conflict with regard to Craig coming out. Nancy and Craig have been together for around 30 years. Why not write a story where a wife is not surprised or betrayed by her husband's sexuality, but perceptive enough to be empathic with his development and supportive of his growth. They are both in their late 50s, there's no reason for this to be drama filled, and there may also be no reason for them to divorce. The assertion that Nancy had no idea just makes her seem stupid. This story does not need conflict, nor does it need Craig to be unfaithful to be told, those are old fashioned troupes about being in the closet that do not seem to apply to a modern culture that is more versed in fluidity.

GH: Classic Thread
I disagree that GH ever stopped using the hospital as the focus of the show. It seems to me that every five years or so a headwriter is inspired by the idea that General Hospital hosts an annual class of medical and nursing interns which is a great excuse to introduce new characters. In the mid-1980s we got the O'Connor brothers, Patrick and Kevin. Then in the early 90s we got Monica's daughter Dawn added to the nursing staff, along with some "b" characters who lived in an apartment with tainted water. Then, Carly and her class of nurses. Then, Karen and her class of residents who crossed over to Port Charles. And finally Patrick, his brother, and his class of interns. One could argue that GH, which has been established as a private-for-profit hospital, continuing to maintain a university affiliation to train doctors and nurses at the internship level could be seen as a bit farfetched. Just as the medical laboratory that conveniently is able concoct antidotes for every major virus in Port Charles seems unlikely to exist in a small town hospital. But those plot points are obviously written by people who know as much about hospital management as they know about the chances of earthquakes in an eastern seaboard shipping town, inherited wealth by illegitimate heirs, or the ways in which organized crime works.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
Today we learned that VPR Stassi, who amused listeners of her podcast with stories about threatening to call the police on a minority co-worker, is coming out with a book about coping with cancel culture. RHONY Ramona, who had to be given additional HR training on respecting diversity, is then given opportunities to film spinoffs by Bravo. And, a RHOM star whose son was arrested for homophobic attacks goes on WWHL last night without any questions about his behavior. It makes me wonder if the Bravo audience has a different definition of racism? I also read the account of RHOSLC Jenny's Instagram explanation on Page Six. It goes without saying that Jenny asserts that she is not racist. She takes full responsibility, although she acknowledges that she employed a social media team. Her defense was that her responses were based on fears that members of a minority class were going to damage her belongings or threaten her way of life. Now, maybe she doesn't use racial epitaphs in public spaces (which is the very least that a civilized person should do), but she does condone violence against members of a racial minority and she supports the belief that minority citizens should not have equal access to law enforcement if they disagree with her opinions. It all left me wondering why a Salt Lake City housewife would need a social media team before they became a public figure? But if someone can sell private individuals that they need social media managers, I guess I have to respect their hustle. Because, if someone is too dumb to know that race should not determine a person's civil rights, than I guess they can be conned into anything.

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
For those wishing for a modern re-boot it begs the question if either of CC's ex wives could board a plane from Europe to Santa Barbara in 2022 wearing either a hat with a thick veil to hide their face or a little old man costume with a voice changer? I always assumed they traveled in those get-ups. Or, if supply chain issues would inhibit Lionel's ability to ship a sarcophagus to his home?

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
Not that it was written this way, BUT, there's the old saying about how you get'em is also how you'll lose'em. So, given that Sophia got CC after being with his brother and his enemy, perhaps she was afraid of how the universe would repay her? However, Pamela was off her rocker from day one, and it was obvious that she would hold no appeal to CC, who didn't like her, or any of their kids, that much. Thus, I would have to attribute Sofia's insecurity to the lack of support that CC offered her during the trauma of almost loosing Eden.

Y&R: Old Articles
I tend to pinpoint Victor's dislike of Brad to the moment when Brad tried to ally with Jack to takeover Newman Enterprises (after his return from Italy). There are interesting parallels between Brad Carlton and Brad Elliott, both changed their names, both hid their pasts, and both were morally questionable.

Like I mentioned in my post Don had a rather thick Long Island accent when he was on Days, that tempered a bit on Y&R, but it was probably not distinctive enough to be mimicked. Although Brad himself later attempted some character work in this classic scene that hinted at his Jewish roots.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Wow, now that's a BAD recast. Charmless, uninteresting to look at, and tripping over his lines. To paraphrase history, I knew Roger Thorpe, Roger Thorpe was a fine looking man, and that sir is no Roger Thorpe. Although I did appreciate the old soap troupe of having everyone call him by his full name so that we remember which part he is playing.

Y&R: Old Articles
Thirty years later, the detail of the Brad-in-a-cage story that still leaves me with questions is why Lisa hired Rich Little. Little was a famous impersonator, but I don't think he played himself, I think they gave him a fictional name for story purposes. Either way, Lisa hired him to imitate Brad and give an excuse for why he left Genoa City. However, in the actual scene they used Don Diamont's voiceover, with Rich Little lip-syncing his way through the episode. So, why did they hire Rich Little if he wasn't going to impersonate Brad? They explained every other detail, even where Brad showered and how he went to the bathroom, but the voiceover was BS. And, because it was Y&R they replayed the scene as a memory for Traci over and over again during the time Brad was in captivity. I get that Don did not have a distinctive voice in order to impersonate, (although he had a strong Long Island accent when he began on soaps) but then why use that detail rather than just have him write a letter and use a forger? All that being said, it would have been fun to see one of Lisa's family members come back to try to avenge her name even years later.

Y&R: Old Articles
I was always stuck on the idea that he had met his first wife Lisa (of the infamous Brad-in-a-cage story) in a similar fashion to how he met Traci. He worked for the family and seduced the most vulnerable person. So, that was the thread that I always wished had been explored. If we found out that Brad had been a serial seducer and con man, it would have vindicated Jack's initial impression of him. The Nazi thing was so weird because (1) the persistent use of the word reliquaries, which was such an odd and nonspecific term when I think they meant religious artifacts like the gold adornments that go on Torahs in a temple, (2) it did not fit with Brad's age, I know they were family pieces, but WWII would have been closer to his grandparents generation if he was in his early 20s when he was introduced, and (3) nothing was ever done to explore his Jewish heritage.

General Hospital January 2022 Discussion Thread
Question (may be rhetorical) - Why does Dante, who has no history of mental health issues, experience more PTSD symptoms, when he was in captivity for less time than Drew, who has a significant history of trauma?
