Back from the dead - The good, the bad, & the ugly
One of the worst BFTD has got to be Tony Dimera. Not only have they never established how the audience can differentiate between Tony and Andre, but he switches between being a romantic partner and an evil villain every time he is resurrected. At this point he's returned from the dead so often that I've lost track of how he died the last time. I've had this thought a million times, but just once I want a soap to go through beats of how one re-establishes their lives after BFTD, like going to the DMV to get a new driver's license, and applying for new credit cards ("I'm sorry Mr Dimera but you and your father have returned from the dead once too often for us to approve your American Express card"). It would ground the story and make it seem more relatable.

General Hospital: January 2023 Discussion Thread
This is kind of ridiculous, but did Nikolas call Caroline because she has access to some memory erasing drug like the one she used on Liz? Or, just because she's unethical so he might be able to rely on her support? Don't the Cassadines still have access to whatever technology was used to erase Drew's memory (or was that too expensive)? It just feels like this Caroline callback is unnecessary, especially because Nikolas spent months protecting Esme's fetus and now he wants to inject her with some untested drug. It reeks of a last minute let's-get-rid-of-Nik story and we'll worry about the logic, motive, and response later. But, maybe that's just because we're privy to the BTS drama.

Overall, it seems as if they've adapted well to writing and producing within the streaming format. On network, they could build to each commercial with a suspense moment, but that's gone because it is impracticable on Peacock. Also, it feels like there are fewer scenes per episode. But, with daily drops, they still maintain a weekly cliffhanger which I enjoy in terms of tradition.

I guess the Geraldo Show proves the point, because he only refers to her as Wednesday, and never as a soap star - point taken

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
While the very idea of provoking an audience discussion about cause of a sexual assault would be abhorrent today, it was very much in the culture at the time in 1990. The Accused with Jodie Foster was released in 1988, and up for awards in 1989 when the story was probably pitched. There was also a case in Florida where the defense was predicated on the skirt the victim wore at the time of the crime. Even the use of the term date rape is antiquated because it presumes that a prior relationship mitigates the criminal intent. So, in that context I think they were playing with the idea about cultural questions regarding sexual assault, as opposed to trying to blame Julia or malign her character. Regardless of the writer, SB had a history of stories inspired by the films of that period like Madeline's murder and the film The Jagged Edge, or Eden's rape and the film Malice with Alec Baldwin, and the Harland Richards story with the film Black Widow with Debra Winger. They used the cultural conversations of the moment to create drama. Unfortunately the 90s were filled with erotic thrillers where sexual assault was portrayed as thrilling or sexy, but that was another time in culture and I believe it's unfair to view soaps produced then through a modern lens without context.

I still smile thinking about Rachel finding an identical bracelet to her own in Mac's car which indicated that Mac was macking with another woman. First, it meant that Mac was an object of desire, not just some old guy that Rachel was playing for money. Second, I liked Mac's sophisticated response to the situation. And third, whether it was planned or just kismet it set up the reveal that Iris was illegitimate because it demonstrated that prior to Rachel he did not value commitment. To me, this explained their unique love story because they changed each other, it wasn't just a reformation of Rachel.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
@Gray Bunny Yeah, I mean the obvious shame here is that the reunion has already been filmed so this is only taking place on social media which is part of why Housewives are in their flop era because once again the stuff that intrigues the audience only takes place off camera

People not knowing about Janice's death is analogous to the SB Dobson's admitting to not watching the show during their absence and rehashing the drama between Mason and CC that had been resolved months earlier. It is a writer trying to rewind the clock, mostly because they aren't knowledgeable of how the plot advanced under other writers. Rachel's murder trial was a major event in Bay City, so most characters around at that time would be aware of how Janice died. Maybe some of the younger characters, or the new arrivals would be oblivious, but those who were a part of the family would know the facts.

Back from the dead - The good, the bad, & the ugly
I like the Clay/Alex story on Loving because the audience was in on the con from the beginning. I maintain a theory that part of the issue between Ron C and the audience is that he's always trying to trick or surprise the viewer, but actually people like being smarter that the characters on screen. So, it helped that viewers knew that Alex was a con early on, and the whole issue of facial reconstruction was just a ruse. It also was brilliantly heightened by the appearance of Rick. Gwen was trying to hide his parentage, Rick was a bad guy, but Alex had to go along with it in order to avoid a DNA test that would prove he wasn't Clay. Furthermore, it made Ava seem smart that she figured out the con before anyone else.

Denise/Mary came to Bay City two years before Jason. She was well established in the Reginald and Vince triangle by then. I believe Lemay brought back the Frame farm, and then Jason comes back, reestablishes Frame construction, does some work on the Cory mansion, and started a contentious relationship with Rachel.

Great idea, they'd be an excellent couple given Leo's old man fetish. It would be nice for them to find some happiness together in a lab somewhere in Europe.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
The editors have never demonstrated that there is any reason to be mean to Karen Hugar. She's delusional and wears weird wigs, but she's totally harmless and doesn't deserve the vitriol that Giz and Robyn throw at her. Maybe there's a lot going on behind the scenes, but on-screen they just seem like they are unreasonably accusing an old lady of screwing around.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
Candiace is her own worst enemy. She engendered audience support this season, the editors were on her side with Chris, and she was great with Andy this week on WWHL. But, she then she sticks her nose in the Robyn situation and invokes Andy in her argument which is never going to end well. I think it is interesting that Robyn, (and by proxy Gizelle), were trying to distract the others from the Juan gossip by throwing Chris under the bus, which Karen knew all along and was willing to keep under her hat, until they tried to replace her with Cha Cha. But Candiace doesn't need to open herself up to attacks on social media in order to reap the benefits from Robyn's poor choices. But, if Candiace was able to control her impulses she wouldn't be a good housewife, so...

Poor Barbara Rhodes (aka Irene) was given a huge amount details to explain in a rather short amount of time. In hindsight it was an effective (yet ludicrous) part to play.

In the BFTD thread @Vee mentioned the two Todd's, but was it ever resolved how Walker Lawrence came to resemble Victor Jr and how that retcon jibbed with the logic of the two Todds? Also, wasn't there a reference to the idea that Victor Jr had some cognitive delays in the flashbacks during Irene's exposition that detailed the logic of the two Todds? Because that didn't seem to reflect the history of the character on screen. I guess we can attribute the mistakes to the need to tie up loose ends at the time of the cancellation, but I'm still stuck on those details. As well as my earlier question of why Clint left journalism for the oil business after rejecting working with Asa for so long.

Clay/Alex on Loving comes to mind. Alex Masters impersonated Clay Alden, who was thought to have been killed in a plane accident. And, eventually when Clay returned he figured out that everyone liked Alex more because Clay was such an a-hole

The Media/Journalism Thread
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tylenol-murders-investigation-new-dna-tests-40-years-later/ The Tylenol case is fascinating to me because it changed consumer packaging forever, but 40 years later we are starting to see that the culture is biased toward believing that there is some boogeyman out to poison us all, rather than believe that a mentally-ill family member was trying to hurt their kids. It is as if people are only worried when a threat may effect themselves, so they overestimate the concern rather than focusing on the most obvious conclusion. I keep thinking about how the Alec Murdaugh trial is using the same defense. By focusing on issues like the fact that two guns were used, and the police never found the bloody clothes of the murderer, they would like the jury to believe that there are multiple unseen threats to safety, when in reality, wives are more likely to be murdered by their husbands than an unknown assailant.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
I predict that within 48 hours the tides will turn and social media will start to go against Caroline as bi-phobic rather than focusing on the fact that Brandi's advances were unsolicited. I'm not saying that I agree, but as an observer of social media, I foresee this as the next topic of discussion.

I think this is debatable, because The Adams Family was only on for two seasons, whereas she was on ATWT for three years. Unfortunately, for Gen X-ers like me, she is probably most remembered for those controversial daytime talk show appearances with her pornstar ex-husband than either of her acting roles.

New families that took off and families that didn’t
@Paul Raven From the WGA website on residuals for members (still a little unclear, but straight from the source). Residuals for reuse of daytime serial (sometimes called “soap operas”) characters are based on “aggregate” minimums. Aggregate means the writers are employed within a group, often for specific functions, to work for a specified term. This minimum varies depending on when writing services are performed and the length of the program. The residuals are allocated in the following percentages: If a breakdown has been written by the head writer, or if no breakdown has been written: Head Writer Associate Writer 50% 50% If a writer other than the head writer has written a breakdown: Head Writer Writer of breakdown Associate Writer 35% 15% 50% If a writer other than the head writer has written a rewrite or a polish: Head Writer Associate Writer (of script) Associate Writer (of rewrite or polish) 47.5% 47.5% 5%

Forgive me for harping on the same issue repeatedly, but when I look at the Barash's wedding photos the first thing I see is my pet peeve of an aging actor with a receding hairline, still coloring his hair with a single process dye. My tip is that if you're going to publish photos of your marriage to someone a generation younger than you, ditch the dye, it's not fooling anyone.

New families that took off and families that didn’t
My hypothesis is that given that there are financial considerations for a writer to create a new family of characters, due to WGA residuals, we should rate the success of a new family not on popularity, but if they survived a new team of writers because the production would still need to compensate the fired staff for the invention of those characters. To me, that is the difference between ATWT's Snyders vs AW's Halloways. Kit and Holden may have been equally received in their initial romantic pairings. However, the Halloways were dismissed after a new writer was installed, but the Snyders continued to thrive.

Back from the dead - The good, the bad, & the ugly
Upon reflection I prefer a BFTD plot over a facial reconstruction story everytime. The soap plastic surgeons who able to provide a completely new face, (without any visible scars), and a new body, (although they often leave a tell-tale tattoo), for patients who often have no viable means of paying for their service are truly miracle workers. Which is why one of my favorite scenes in soap history is when OLTL's Todd was BFTD, and Blair explains that Victor Jr told her he had surgery, to which he incredulously replies, "and you believed him?" Ironically that was written by Ron C whom I criticized in my last post, but to quote Emerson "a foolish adherence to consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

What caused Clint to leave journalism and go back to the oil business? I was just thinking about how the Buchanans of OLTL sort of contrasted with the Lewis family of GL because it was the oldest Buchanan who was introduced not wanting to be a part of the family business versus the youngest Lewis who did not want a role in their heritage. I guess it was his divorce from Viki, or Bo's absence, but I don't recall a specific plot point that accounted for his about face on working with Asa. In later years one would could easily forget the initial father and son animosity because there was so much focus on Asa's relationship with Bo and Max. But, in hindsight, it was a shame that Clint gave up the newspaper game.
