  1. ^ How ridiculous. There should be no extension. Taking any of these children was an act of evil, but under 5? What a terrible trauma. I wish nothing but pain on everyone involved in this.
  2. I want to be happy about the fact that this guy is out, but will his replacement be better? Doubt it. Maybe he'll be better at pretending. Yes. I think people are on edge right now and are expecting the worse for 45 at every turn. Yet despite his best efforts we aren't living under some blood and soil doctrine. A citizen is a citizen as it should be.
  3. This is really messed up.
  4. This breaks my heart. Only 58% of people disapprove of 45's immigration policy. The part of me that sees the dark humor in these things is reminded of The Wire. The scene where Jimmy is upset about the witness being killed and tells Bunk he expects all of Baltimore to rise as one against the injustice (But they should have and we should too). https://twitter.com/politico/status/1014348081356296193
  5. What a farce.
  6. “He’s a handsy guy. Thankfully I was 29 and not 14,” continued Pearce I was a real Kevin Spacey fan, so it disgusts me to think of how long he was getting away with these assaults. Another reminder that no matter how much you like a celebrity we have no idea who they really are.
  7. If we had any kind of reasonable leader he would take this opportunity and try to bring Canada into the deal as well. Instead we have someone who alienates allies at every turn and works against his own goals.
  8. This is a good thread for people feeling despair, depression and anxiety because of the state of the nation. She's a Rabbi so you have to take it for what it is.
  9. I think it was poorly written with weak arguments as well. The author said more than once Trump is a good father and close with his children. Really? What I remember is how Ivanka is his clear favorite because she chased after him begging for his attention as a little girl. Oh, and the stories of how he humiliated one of his sons in front of his classmates because he didn't wear a suit to a baseball game. When you have a favorite and your other children know it, you are a shitty parent. When you make your children come to you because you can't be bothered, you are a shitty parent. What Trump did do is many children. Maybe that's all that counts with some?
  10. Not exactly news to any of us.
  11. I think she's right about door to door being very effective.
  12. ^ Should be sanctions until every child is reunited with their parent. Speaking of which, good lord. The injustice is endless. Making poor parents pay to get their kids back. F*ck everyone involved with this. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/07/trump-separated-children-airfare/
  13. There is no question about it. 45 doesn't even bother keeping up the pretense of sharing power. I guess we'll be cleaning up the environmental messes from these corporations run amok for decades to come. Of course, some damage can never be undone.
  14. This is ridiculous. In normal times all of this regressive tax stuff would piss me off, but with what's happening on the border it's just a blip. Still, it's financially reckless and we will pay for it down the road.
  15. I hope someone can stop him.
  16. Here's some good news.
  17. They certainly achieved that much, no doubt. Anyone who isn't actively trying to harm large groups of people would be better. Anyone.
  18. Yes and also a sign of how strange things are. We have such a clash of ideology going on. We careen disaster to hope and back again sometimes in a matter of days.
  19. And probably a lot worse, even now. Who else really has the military to be a global power on the same level? I was thinking just the other day, who will save us from ourselves if things really go to hell? Then I thought of China and what they have done to their population. No one stopped them because the price would be far too high even if it were possible. The same is true for us. I think a lot of nations will find a better economic and ecological partner in China, as long as they can ignore the gross human rights violations. Plus when it comes to xenophobia is there a country more plagued with it than China? I guess it'll be interesting to see how things shake out.
  20. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if 45 found an "enemy" in an attempt to unite us close to the next presidential election. Very true.
  21. I would. I would be very surprised. Why stop when you are in the middle of a major power grab? I can't think of a single reason why they wouldn't back 45 in hopes that RBG (in her 80's) will die. It's not like they needed him to get a conservative on the court anyhow. Pence would have done the same if that's all it's about. I would love nothing more than to see him kicked out on his ass, but I'm not hopeful. I understand if people don't like this guy, but I think he's right. https://twitter.com/MichaelAvenatti/status/1012079664263827458
  22. It's pretty bad if you care about reproductive rights, voting rights or gay rights.
  23. This piece discusses pre-fascism in The U.S. and Italy, although I agree more with the people who see it as the early stages of fascism. I think he is right on when he calls what is happening on our border as a trial balloon. One that worked pretty well overall. https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/fintan-o-toole-trial-runs-for-fascism-are-in-full-flow-1.3543375?mode=amp Fascism does not need a majority – it typically comes to power with about 40 per cent support and then uses control and intimidation to consolidate that power. So it doesn’t matter if most people hate you, as long as your 40 per cent is fanatically committed. That’s been tested out too. And fascism of course needs a propaganda machine so effective that it creates for its followers a universe of “alternative facts” impervious to unwanted realities. Again, the testing for this is very far advanced.
  24. This is obviously more bad news. The message is states can do what they want.
  25. What a nightmare.
