PART 1

BAY CITY CENTER - Joy is in line at a coffee shop, and is behind one person, when Steven comes up and waits behind her. Then a handsome barista approaches the counter.

Barista: We’re sorry but the coffee machine is down.

Joy: What do you mean, down?

Barista: It’s been doing this frequently. I’ve called the repairman. I apologize.

Joy turns around and talks to Steven.

Joy: Isn’t that the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard? The coffee machine in a coffee shop doesn’t work. I mean really?

Steven: Yeah I was really looking forward to my cappucino.

Joy: Are you familiar with this town?

Steven: You could say that.

CORY PRODUCTIONS - Amanda is in her office when Cory knocks on the door.

Amanda: Hey kid. What are you doing here?

Cory: We...were supposed to have breakfast.

Amanda: Oh...oh no I’m so sorry Cory. There’s so much that has to be done here. Can I take a raincheck?

Cory: Sure sis. Have you heard from mom?

Amanda: No she hasn’t called me.

Cory: Me neither.

Amanda: She probably hasn’t had the chance. Why don’t you give her a call?

Cory: I’ve tried already. It just goes directly to voicemail. Well I guess I’ll just have those pancakes and bacon by myself.

Amanda: I’m sorry kid. I promise I’ll share my eggs and bacon with my little brother.

Amanda grabs an envelope.

Amanda: Can you give these to Iris for me on your way out?

Cory: If you promise to get me an extra stack of pancakes when we go for breakfast.

Amanda (smiling): Of course.

After Cory leaves, Amanda checks the computer, and notices something.

Amanda: This is a lot of money. Operation Loco? What is this?

Meanwhile, Iris is sitting at her desk and she flashes back to (EPISODE 111)CORY PUBLISHING

A name tag is placed on the door of an office that reads: Iris Cory, C.E.O. Iris walks up to it and admires it.

Iris: Iris Cory, C.E.O. Looks great.

She walks into her office, runs and sits in the office chair, spins around and lets out a joyful scream.

Iris: This office looks so drab, so gloomy, so Rachel.

Someone familiar walks in…

Iris: Well if it isn’t the famous Tucker McCall. I was just thinking how you should come down after I had this mausoleum redecorated.

Tucker: Hey there beautiful…

After they hug…

Tucker: You’re finally the CEO huh?

Iris: Yep and I couldn’t have done it without you.

Iris flashes back to the present.

Iris: That’s right. I couldn’t have done this without you. You always gave me the confidence that I could succeed in business. I’m gonna need it again.

Cory knocks on the door.

Iris: Hi what’s that in your hand.

Cory: Amanda told me to give you this. Feels like it’s a bunch of CDs. I didn’t know you all were into music like that.

Iris (smiling): Are you trying to call me old?

Cory: No that’s not what I meant at all.

Iris: Have you heard from your mother?

Cory: No unfortunately not.

Iris: How could she not? You must be worried to pieces about your father.

CAVANAUGH CLINIC - MONTICELLO - Rachel is holding Carl’s hand at Carl’s bedside as he lies hooked up to a machine.

Rachel: Lisa says you’re making progress. The twins have been texting and leaving me messages. I don’t want to tell them anything until you’re all better. I don’t want them to spend all their time worrying about you, and I know you don’t either. We can’t lose you again. You’ll be back again, stronger than ever.

Suddenly Rachel feels a squeeze…

Rachel (smiling): Carl?

Steven: I grew up here.

Joy: In this little drab town?

Steven: It has it’s advantages. Headed to work?

Joy: The only thing that’s on my mind right now is my morning cuppa joe.

Steven: Well the nearest one besides this one is on the other side of town. Do...you need a lift?

Joy: I don’t know you.

Steven: How rude of me. I’m Dr. Steven Frame.

Joy: Joy.

Steven: Now that we know each other, I wouldn’t mind giving you a ride there. The alternative would take you an hour.

Joy: A little exercise never hurt, right?

Joy tries to walk past him, but…

Steven: I understand your trepidation. How do you like your coffee?

Joy: One cream and two sugars. Wait a minute. You’re not…

Steven: I will go across town, get your coffee, and bring it back here for you. If you’re willing to wait.

Joy (smiling): It’ll be cold by the time you get back.

Steven: Hopefully their microwave still work even if the coffee machine doesn’t.

They both smile at each other.

Iris: Rachel went to Springfield right?

Cory: Yeah that’s where she took dad.

Iris: What kind of mother does that? Oh...I’m sorry.

Cory: It’s okay. I just wanna know my dad is doing.

Iris: Tell ya what. I have a friend who lives in Springfield, Alexandra Spaulding. I’ll give her a call and she’ll find out for us.

Cory: Are you sure? You know you don’t have to…

Iris: I WANT to...now stop before I change my mind.

Cory: Thank you. Thank you so much.

Cory spontaneously hugs Iris, meanwhile Amanda comes to the door and observes Cory and Iris’s embrace.

Lisa examines Carl while Rachel watches…

Rachel: How is he?

Lisa: There’s no change.

Rachel: But he squeezed my hand.

Lisa: That was just a reflex. I’m sorry.

Rachel: I just want him to come back. I put everything on the line. I took risks for him to come here and get treatment.

Lisa: And he is getting stronger, but it’s going to take some time for his body to rid itself of the poison. If you’ll excuse me, I’ve gotta go check on a patient.

Lisa enters the patient’s room with some medication and a cup and she calls out for her…

Lisa: Marissa? How are you feeling? It’s time for your medication.

Marissa: Better all the time.

Lisa (giving Marissa a pill and a cup of water): That’s great. The boss wants you to take this.

Marissa puts the pill in her mouth and drinks the water.

Lisa: I’ll be back to check on you later.

Lisa leaves and Marissa takes the pill out of her mouth, and places it in her drawer, with many other pills identical to the one she just took out of her mouth.

Marissa: The boss is not gonna get his way.
