After viewing the Ice Princess episodes during the soapnet marathon, I have to say that it looked like an interesting story especially with the reactions of all the characters at GH and at Kelly's. Members sheilaforever Posted May 7, 2013 Members Share Posted May 7, 2013 OLTL is a case where new blod actually does wonders: I found it intolerable to watch on ABC, the dialogue was jsut BAD. With the younger (?) writers it is much more clever and witty, eg pop culture references (about TV the internet etc), than it was with the same generic writing teams on ABC. Y&R on the other hand HAD great writers and they were all driven away for the likes of Amanda Beall. It's truely a soap staple to hire bad writers over and over again regardless on how many shows they have failed before... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Overall I think Y&R has pretty good dialogue writers. Not like with B&B where a Patrick Mulcahey episode and a Jack Smith episode feel like two completely different shows. It's not horrible but the newbies are very green for the most part and the vets stories are not compelling so far. OLTL is working for me because the acting is so stellar and they are primarily using their veteran cast with Matthew, Dani and Jeffrey in there as well. OLTL is in a much stronger position. The dialog is very good but I'm waiting to see more cutting edges to the relationships. I want Bo to talk about how difficult it is to get it up without viagra. Admittedly, the younger cast is green, but they're also pretty engaging. And soap viewers in the past have given the newbies a chance to grow into their roles. I'm trying to do that for both younger casts. I find AMC more relatable than OLTL, except for the kidnapping story which I think sticks out like a sore thumb on a show that's more character driven (which I'm glad to see) than plot intense (it probably would have worked better on OLTL). I think both shows need a little time to settle into their groove. That said, I think these initial shows have been solid launching pads for the returns. Members Scryber96 Posted May 8, 2013 Members Share Posted May 8, 2013 I find it funny that on one hand you praise clever and witty writing filled with pop cultural references and dismiss Amanda Beall on the the other, since I find her writing to be filled with clever wit and pop culture references. Her scripts are the only ones that keep me at all interested in Y&R these days and you can usually tell it's one of hers from the snappy dialogue even better the credits roll. Beall is the best script writer Y&R has on-hand these days, then JFP has done more damage to that show and its writing team than I thought. Besides, who watches Y&R for snappy dialogue? You are SUPPOSED to watch Y&R for a good exploration of darkly psychosexual issues, not for good dialogue. (No wonder fans complain that the people running this show have no clue anymore what the show is truly about!) Because she's inexpensive and in need of work?
