All: Are Daytime Dramas Finally Trying To Fix Themselves?

Exactly Tracy. If there are 20 soap fans in a room and you all ask them what would you like to see, I believe at least 14 of them would say better writing.

A part of me likes to see ATWT focus on some of the family type stuff at times, rather than always watching teen angst.

The whole Jennifer storyline was wonderfully done, because there were family present. I was disappointed when they did the Lucinda cancer storyline. They had so many opportunities to make it a true family situation; but during the course of time, we rarely got to see Sierra, and then all of a sudden her storyline was just a way to prop up the whole Keith vs Holden story.

I started watching when I was a kid (much to my mother's chagrin) and even at that young age I found it fascinating. My mom was hooked on AMC and there was a time when I used to detest the 1-2pm hour because there was nothing fun to watch on TV. And then one day, I stumbled upon watching AMC... got hooked on watching Maria and most of all Julia (as evidenced by my Sydney Penny banner, you can imagine how OVERJOYED I was when AMC lured her back.) and ever since, been a faithful watcher. Now I admit to not watching during my college years because classes got in the way, but once I graduated, I was back as an AMC fan and am now a GH fan as of last year.

I miss the days of romance and real issues. I write a ton of fanfic (mostly AMC) and always try to stick with real issues and stuff that makes sense.

Here's hoping with these possible changes we see at the helm that the senses of soaps come back.

Honestly, I just like seeing quality, character driven dramas. Daytime doesn't have to be about secret affairs, murder and other stuff you listed. I would love to see more realistic stories like the affects of drugs, alcohol and domestic violence but that won't happen with many of the current hacks in charge. Gone are the days when soaps addressed many real life issues.

As an OLTL viewer, WHAT effects or consequences? They certainly are random at best. Blair can get drive thru head surgery, but Nora gets six months in a coma. Viki's heart transplant got ES the sixth Emmy, but now Kelly is running around town less than a month after her surgery. Kelly is practically sainted for her role in the baby switch, John McBain barely gets a slap on the wrist for his part in the Christian is/isn't Christian story, Margaret gets cured and killed quickly - little payoff for the two years of terror on the Mannings....and the list continues. Other soaps also have it...B & B has Ridge close to rape Brooke...with little consequences.

I would like to see AMC do the same. I think the writers don't realize that viewers might be interested in family dramas involving intergenerational characters. Not every story line has to be about sperm and love triangles.

Shhhh....sperm is not called sperm on AMC. It's called "samples". Lol.

At OLTL, the holes are bigger than the plot they drive, and inconsistency is the norm. I only follow GH and AMC at a distance, but the Island of Dr. Madden sounded so bad I thought it HAD to be a joke. Same with the Kelly Monaco DWTS rip-off story. There is something that needs to be fixed desperately at ABC.

I've only been watching Y and R from that same distance for a short time, but I've liked what I've seen, but read some complaints from others. Movement covers a variety of faults. It's a lot easier to forgive a timeline inconsistency when the story plays out over three weeks rather than it be the focus for six months. I guess I have only seen the new writers and the fixes in action.

To keep viewers you must have...

- Good storylines : not to long, and not to short. If its an affair then build it up for about 5 - 8 months (if the pairing is right) before a big finish.

- Good Characters : You need as a viewer to be able to understand and connect with the character

Yes they are trying but they aren't getting what is really wrong. ABCD is spending so much time trying to chase the elusive audience that they don't have they are throwing away the audience that they do have. OLTL is a disaster. Until they decide to offer quality, family, character driven stories with characters played by good actors it's just doomed to fail. The shock and awe mentality is only hastening their demise.

IMO, to keep viewers you must concentrate on the characters we are invested in. KIS, Keep It Simple. Keep it family oriented. Show us how they interact with one another. We want to see the veterans who can ACT, not five, six, new people who we have no rooting value for.

Trim the fat, get rid of the waste. I am thinking of AMC here. I do not care for Jonathan and Erin Lavery. I don't care for Amanda. Give Sydney Penny a decent storyline, why not see if she has chemsitry with Aidan? Get rid of Del, has he actually contributed anything in the last year he was on? Bring back and USE the veterans. Give Julia Barr a storyline. I would love to see her, Jack, Erica and Jeff Martin in a storyline. I realize Jeff Martin is new, but he is a good actor and involved in a major family.

So yes, I think they are trying to fix themselves. Better writing and family interaction will do it every time

Y&R making a change (and it did need it-the pacing sucked and the show was boring) even while at the top was a HUGE signal to the industry. If the #1 soap is making a change for its fans even though it has not fallen hard, then all the others with pissed off fans running away from the screens probably said maybe we better get going. I also think Days making a change, since it is one of the big 3 popularity-wise, was huge too. Days getting Sheffer combined with Y&R being on a roll probably scared some shows into thinking maybe this will be the 90's all over again with both of them at the top as #1 and #2. Now I am waiting for the other shoes to drop because I am sure that Higley will be gone by year's end and GL may make a change too possibly as a last ditch effort like AW did. Days, Y&R, and AMC got their changes-all the other shows but ATWT and Passions need to follow suit.

I think GH and B&B will be last though. Brad Bell will be hard to push out and Guza is Frons's lapdog so that may take forever.

I am happy though that 3 shows (actually 4 because Passions does need JER as bad as that sounds) have done what they need to do-hopefully things start to tunr around for the whole industry.

I really do sense the soaps are starting to get a major fine tuning and fixing...you got some old head writers out (Reilly, McTavish, Smith) in with some fresh new talent that hopefully culminates into fine storytelling and increased ratings.

Given the current competition of channels and shows, soaps better look to positive changes to ensure their security....let's not lose anymore soaps! As for me, I remain an optimist :D
