@EricMontreal22 I am sorry to hear about your childhood abuse. Thank you for sharing though, it takes real courage to be open about this, even on a message board.
There is something about the nature of soaps, airing every weekday for years, even decades, that makes it feel very irresponsible to tell these kinds of stories just for the shock value or a twist. Yes they are here to entertain, but I do think because of that nature they have a responsibility too. Even if he was still the killer, it would have been much more powerful if we knew about his abuse sooner, and he had to grapple with trying to survive and choosing violence. They could still have their twist, but it wouldn’t be just there for shock.
As far as deference to history, sometimes I think hardcore soap fans are like Star Trek, superhero comic books, etc, in being so locked in to the minutia of the thing that they lose sight of telling stories. I think history should be respected, but not slavishly in every instance. Now all these properties spend too much time navel gazing, too much time on untold tales of the past or hidden reveals of the past or cheap stunts.
I think Ron Carlivati, who is also a comic book fan, really suffers from this. A prime example is digging up the oldest Spencer sibling who had not been mentioned since the earliest days of Bobbie and Luke, never factored into their stories, and was dug up for three days with a relative also gone fairly quickly after. Both DAYS and GH are littered with this kind of nonsense from him and his protégées.
