Since your comment made me curious @carolineg , I'm actually watching the Luke Last Episode. I never saw it in real time.

And wow! What a difference a decade makes indeed.

While I don't like the writing technique I like to call 'who's on first' dialogue that RC used to use to stall on getting a piece of plot movement across, overall the writing is actually better than how I feel about it now. I still see his humor in the Morgan/Dillon gay misunderstanding, but it all just feel...stronger?...put together.

But what I wanted to talk about was MAXIE. So much better styling. I love that Megan Ward-ish Kate bob she's wearing. And she's giving every inch of the fashionista I'm used to her being with Madelaine who is giving pure ice queen. So it's an even match. Makes me wish Maxie had a rival now to catfight with.

Excuse me but...MMMMMMMMmmmm DANTE. God, looked just as good then as he still does now. And watching these scenes is just making me side-eye current GH where he and Lulu are not together cuz these scenes show their couple power to me.

Trivial note...I rarely have found Roger Howarth attractive, but him with that short hair and that nice full goatee...is making me think WOOF.

Nice to see Laura relevant.

Yeah...Luke's last episode does feel like it's in a vacuum so I can see why people had issues with it.

This is making me miss Dillion. And again...Valerie...a wasted opportunity.

And double WOOF on Nathan. Ric can also still get it. And I totally forgot that Michelle Stafford was originally Nina.

Can I say that just like how much I liked Curtis vs Drew that I have loved how organically (for the most part) and growing the rift between Dante and Chase has become over the last year? Perhaps it's because they became best friends over time, but watching it fall to the wayside due to the Gio storyline has good. Or perhaps it's the fact that neither is completely in the right nor wrong now that it's moved beyond Gio to now Willow.

I am sure someone has already mentioned this, but Mazza and Braedyn Bruner were really going for it after the fireworks following their lovely but largely wholesome scenes on Tuesday's show. The switch flipped and they were all over each other hot and heavy like it was 1994.

Judging by their socials I would not be surprised if they are together IRL, but regardless that was heat and it's something the show needs to lean into instead of writing them like overgrown children.

I haven’t seen the episode yet but I did see their posts and would also not be surprised. And agreed. It’s the same kind of heat the show didn’t capitalize on with Trina/Spencer. That run and jump into his arms is still memorable.

Judge for yourself! The overall scenes that day are well done but the end made me do a double take. You're not getting that from Molly and Cody (though I think they did finally sleep together after the world's longest build).

And again, I ask today’s soap operas- is nobody at the helms watching pop culture? Heated Rivalry is pure romance and the beloved advertising block is eating it up, and the books. They have a chance to service that kind of audience five days a week in various ways, and all but run from it. Make it make sense please.

That was some classic soap opera making out if I have ever seen it! And fully clothed this was more worthy of investment than any roll in the sheets I have seen with Joss ever. Give them something dangerous to be involved in and we have old school GH ready to go!

I think a lot of the response to Heated Rivalry is about viewers fetishizing gay men, rather than romance, but I agree shows like that or Bridgerton show the audience can still be there. I'm not sure how many of them go near soaps, but when they try they are promptly minimized and run off, like Sprina. One of the problems is many fan groups are toxic and abusive beyond belief, which has long been true for soaps, but seems to be at even more of a fever pitch now (I read about some Love Island fans and I think they were putting hexes on contestants or thinking of hiring a hit man to kill one of them). Soap producers may just not want the hassle.

A lot of viewers (male and female) enjoy watching gay men fúcking, and HR has certainly leaned into allowing them that pleasure. But that show is about romance, in addition to being refreshingly explicit about sex and sexual roles. It's not vapid fetish material. It just doesn't shy away from or apologize for sex and intense intimacy being a part of its hook and its appeal. It's the story, the characters and the execution that keep people there.

I'm sure that may be intent, and that is probably true for some fans, but I have just seen this happen before, especially the patterns of the obsessive fans who within about a year will probably be sending myriad threats to the cast and producers and calling everyone involved homophobic. These shows just end up being minefields, which is one of the reasons I think soaps have pulled back (not the only reason but probably one of them).

What titan and I are talking about is the show itself. I've watched the entire series, and you know me well enough by now to know what I do and don't have time for. It is pure romance, as he says. It's also refreshingly frank and explicit. Anticipating what some of the audience may or may not do in future in social media bubbles is not my problem, and not in my interest as a viewer of Heated Rivalry. I'm not watching the audience, I'm watching the show. The show exists independent of them, I watch it and it's quality work. It has been a success because of its quality, not just because it's explicit.

Daytime may be afraid of their viewers and unwilling to bother pushing the envelope vs. just going along to get along, but it made that kind of effort in the past and it should again. HR and other recent successes in the same wheelhouse (homo or hetero) prove they are dividends to be found, whether it's with Gio/Emma or whatever else.

I try to be that way but it's more difficult with shows now because the two have become more and more intertwined to the point where some have these "choose your own adventure" endings to avoid alienating anyone, where actors have to beg viewers to leave their family or friends alone and steadily retreat from social media, or what have you.

It was a good thing for GH to have the injection of more vocal and passionate fans that Sprina brought, and I don't think they ever went to extremes, but the genre is so tired and fearful now and I think a vocal fan response is just too much for them.
