I am behind by a few days because I've been focused on family and now monitoring the fires in LA (my apt is safe so far, but I may be chilling back east a bit longer than I thought) but I will say what I've said before: Based on GH actors' many anecdotes, when FV cares about something he will make time to put it together to his liking. He is said to be very active on the floor or in the booth and has given lots of vets or other actors notes on performance and how to work a scene. So when it's something that matters to him, he will still work to craft it.

The issue for me is twofold. First, I think his skill level for that has degraded as the time and budget crunch has gotten worse. When Frank first started as EP at OLTL he was basically a chameleon; he would tailor himself to whatever HW he was working for (starting with Malone and Griffith) and deliver a reasonably atmospheric show under budget, especially in the first couple years which were very dark and stylish in aesthetic at times even when the stories were often very silly. They never had the money or indulgence from the network that 2000s GH had (which allegedly went over a lot in the Guza II/JFP high on the hog days) but they put out a solid technical product.

As time has gone by and money has gotten tighter I think the upper limit of FV's skill for production value has been maxed out long ago. But the second problem is IMO ultimately about his own taste. When Valentini became the de facto head creative at GH with Carlivati gone, replaced with a succession of writers who answer to him a la JFP, his own preferences were revealed and I think there's just not much there. He was good at being a chameleon producer for others up to a point, but as his own voice IMO it's just about showcasing his favorite actors and personal preferences, maintaining a bland equilibrium and putting the show out. I think all these factors contribute to a very anodyne, rushed show. He'll focus on crafting specific scenes he cares for, sure. But the larger picture doesn't hold together because his emphasis is often on the wrong places. Unlike, say, a Wendy Riche or her crew.

The only montages that touch "Clink Boom" are the "Lullaby Massacre" when Laura is singing to baby lulu and shots ring out at the club, Luke's house, and Sonny's apartment.  That was obviously before Clink/Boom and the Amazing Grace montage when Brenda returns.  You might all be thinking I said that because Brenda is in all three-and that is true.  They still are the top 3 IMO.

The Metro Court Hostage situation one was pretty cool too.

I did kind of like the one where Tamara Braun's Carly brokenly sings "Hush Little Baby" to Morgan in early '04 (when Courtney shoots Brian Beck), but by that point JFP and Guza had already begun regularly overusing the mob action montages. It also was wildly over-choreographed in the action with Jason and the baddies, it just didn't look remotely realistic and was comical. Very few hit well after that for me, though I do have a fondness for the blatant Godfather ripoff sequence crosscutting between Josslyn's(?) christening and Sonny and Dante's confrontation in 2010, right before Sonny shoots him. Mostly bc of the dialogue and performances there.

I think it's Joss's Christening.  It definitely was a Christening because I thought about that one when someone brought up the Christmas shooting.   That was pretty good.

I am going to embarrass myself here, but I liked the James Franco one to Mad World when he falls of the MoMA? balcony.  It's hilarious.

Obviously, I agree about Guza's reliance on these montages.  They were always trying to one up Clink Boom.  A lot of them were entertaining though.

Lol. Oh, you.

Tbf, January on GH has usually had a good pacing to it that comes across as if it's building to February Sweeps. And there is almost always an event that kicks it off somewhat. Or something happens right before. I believe last year it was Spencer and Esme. And the year before that it was Nik's dark descend. etc.

So it's per the course. Which I don't mind at all with GH.

Lol. After posting that...someone posted the original. It goes without saying how good someone looks.

But yeah it sounds so weird.

    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
