GH: December 2024 Discussion Thread

Again, it's veering into Maxie territory with all the dead boyfriends.  I do feel especially bad for Eden to have to play this though.  Typical GH to make things depressing and morbid around Christmas.  Considering the show pretty recently killed off Esme and Spencer, it's a lot of dead young people in a year.

I really didn't think anything of the Jason/Sasha scenes.  It would be so typical Jason to pretend to be Sasha's baby's father instead of Michael though.

GH just seems to love to kill off characters instead of them just leaving town.  For some characters it is unavoidable, but characters like Britt, Brando, Austin, Dex, Jagger and even Esme could have just left, gone to jail, been forced out of town, whatever.  It's not like I am mourning the loss of any of these characters.  It just feels unnecessary to have a serial killer once a year.

The show had more of a sense of fun and the turnover wasn't as noticeable. These days the show makes GH almost seem good.

I haven't seen enough of her story to hit a fatigue level but I like her too. She isn't the most charismatic character, but she has a certain grounded quality and quiet strength that I can appreciate on a soap. The actress is decent too.

I just hope they don't pair her with Jason for real as I imagine the Liz fans and what's left of Carly or Sam fans will eat her up. That and any pairing with Jason is a dead end.

Romantic Jason with Sasha isn't happening. Neither is Romantic Janna (Jason & Anna). Jason & Anna are partners & friends. Jason & Sasha are probably nothing. I mean he did save her from Sidwell but he did that for Carly. Jason does a lot of things because Carly asks him to. Carly does a lot for Jason, too, though. Their friendship is really something.

I have. Often. Short version...slapsticky humor...which usually in the case of this show is out of place in the context of the show.

A good example...during the Holly/Sasha reveal...that was new information for the audience and SHOULD have been played straight and serious to even get the audience on the writers' side. INSTEAD it was being played silly, perhaps campy, and Holly being glib about it...that is slapsticky.

Compare the above to Holly's next day scenes where she was telling Felicia and Maxie about the Holly reveal and that was played on screen completely straight and serious. Holly had mixed emotions over it, Felicia was trying to be a good friend, and Maxie was there for some snark and glib that was not at all out of place and IN character. It was giving soap. And in the overall context of the show...did not feel out of place at all.

That is what I mean when I say 'wacka wacka' humor.

Very. It can be maddening at times because they actually do have some good things.

It really does.

You get me! Thank you.

Oh yes!!! People have been mentioning it here and there. I can't wait to arrive at those scenes myself. Sooooooooooo excited.

I would be down for a quad.

He needs to be getting ready for the murder mystery that might wind up coming his way. But I digress...lol.

It isn't a nice feeling at all. But remember...rejection is projection.

Thank you so much. Examples can mean so much. But if the show didn't have wacka wacka would it have any humor at all?! I think Frankie takes everything so seriously. And, as we know, as it is for Frankie it is for General Hospital. Oh, now, this gives me ideas about his private life. Better not say any more.

Maddening, yes.

And the fact that it isn't says a lot.

It would. Naturally and organic through characters that do it or good actors. Look at Maxie. Still had the seriousness that scene needed, but Maxie was still hilarious.

And yet...there's been a lot of that this year on the show of things that are right there in front of the writers and yet they don't take the better, organic and more soapy way to do it.

Which is a shame because some of those boyfriends had real potential.

I guess there’s no doubt about Brook Lynn and Gio anymore lol and it looks like Gio is now going to have something more to do. I still wonder what the original plan was for him, if they actually had one. Too soon to judge about him and Emma though.

But I did like the impromptu concert that all the men in Brook Lynn’s life gave at the end.

And btw, Ric and Alexis? I did not expect that.

Could’ve done without Charlotte though. And I think the rest of y’all would agree

A lot of good it did! I really felt so bad for Rocco. Charlotte calls on his phone & wants to talk to Lulu & almost immediately Lulu is going to head out to Charlotte. He asks to go with & she says no. Then, she makes it even worse by asking this honest kid to lie for her, to keep what she's doing a secret. He's got to be jealous & also disappointed.

    • Haha that scarf thing did go on a bit too long, very odd. And what a young Rick!  I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I just never got the physical appeal of Grant Aleksander, but he's definitely a great actor. Who is the older lady around the 8:30 mark, and also ends the episode, alone and in pain? She seems like a really interesting character. I love the smoky voice and sultry, snaky vibe she seems to have.
    • I can't remember exactly but I think she lives in or is part of the cottage story with Carrie. Carrie poisons her in this episode.  I forgot Teresa was on the show. (I see that AI is insisting she wasn't - well they're wrong) Poor Maeve. I can how even she had her limits.
    • It pisses me off that the other Duprees are making this incident all about them as well. They are playing a family of victims, acting as if Ted cheated on all of them. They should be supportive, but not like this. I have a family that makes anything that happens to me personally all about them, and seeing the same thing on TV is rage-inducing.
    • There are the makings of good Emmy reels in these past couple of episodes, but the industry is still going to favor even the most mediocre stories and performances on the older soaps. And with the pressure from the government over race I can see the academy shutting out Beyond The Gates to avoid criticism from the administration and the far right media.
    • oh, definitely! It's too bad she hit the start of a rough transition period for the show. She shines, but she's stuck with bad story and some (if not exactly bad) not great co-stars.  Uh, who did Maureen O'Sullivan play? (Sigh--and only if I'd understood exactly who and how wonderful Teresa Wright was in '86) God, the summer of '84 was literally one event after another. Kim's outfit alone must've been worth a small fortune. And poor Maeve. She looks so uncomfortable. Rebecca Hollen told a story on Locher Room where Maeve dropped the f-bomb during the shooting of it. For some reason, she wasn't being listened to, and had just had enough. As a producer, I would've been holding my breath as my pregnant actress kept walking around strange and undoubtably uneven sets in that long skirt.
    • Thanks. I'm glad we have some fan memories of these years as this is such a typically snide take on the genre. It's also poorly written and reminds me a great deal of the tedious "snark" recaps that became popular in the '90s. The end in particular. The 1979/80 stuff I have seen is much more polished than a number of soaps at the time. It was very easy to watch and not too bogged down in past story.  Margo is played by Ann Williams, who was on what seemed like every soap. I think she said Margo was her favorite role.  These episodes aren't consecutive, but if you ever have time, they are worth a watch. They are bits and pieces from January and April of 1979 - April in and out of prison, her past calling to her via her psychic powers (and the suicide of Miles' wife Denise, who had murder framing in mind). April 1979 has the end of Winter Austen (such a fantastic soap name).  I don't want to drop a ton of links but you can find playlists on Youtube.
    • And the rating 'wars' continue...hehe.
    • Well, it was fun while it lasted for Rebecca Herbst. Le sigh.
