The carriage dispute between Disney and cable/satellite provider DirecTV (including U-verse) has greatly impacted several ABC programs since it began on September 1, 2024, with “General Hospital,” “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and “The View” seeing some of their lowest ratings during the week of September 2-6, 2024.

Incidentally, the dispute comes exactly one year after Disney was involved in a similar disagreement with Spectrum parent Charter Communications. That dispute ran for several days (August 31 to September 11, 2023), and also put a dent in ABC’s ratings performance.

As for the current dispute with DirecTV, things don’t seem to be going too well with both parties remaining at odds, according to a recent report by Deadline.

The View

Launching its 28th season on Tuesday, September 3, “The View” (2.101 million) got off to a rocky start among Total Viewers, down -250,000 viewers compared to its final week of originals for Season 27 (week of July 29-August 2, 2024). Compared to the same week last year, the show was down -3,000 viewers.

In the key sales demographics, “The View” hit a new season premiere week low, pulling in a 0.15 rating among Women 18-49 and a 0.24 rating among Women 25-54, down -0.02 in Women 18-49 (0.17 rating) and down -0.04 in Women 25-54 (0.28 rating) from how performed during the week of July 29-August 2, 2024. Meanwhile, the show’s year-to-year performance saw an even steeper decline, dropping -0.06 among Women 18-49 (0.15 rating vs. 0.21 rating) and down -0.11 among Women 25-54 (0.24 ratings vs. 0.35 rating).

“The View” moved into a new studio and unveiled a new opening theme for Season 28.

General Hospital

Kicking off season 62 on Tuesday, September 3, “General Hospital”(1.813 million) hit a new season premiere low among Total Viewers. Compared to its performance one week earlier, the show was down -97,000 viewers. It was down -48,000 viewers compared to its performance during the same week last year. This marks the show’s 21st consecutive week where it has averaged less than two million viewers. The streak began during the week of April 15-19, 2024.

Among Women 18-49, “General Hospital” topped its year ago performance with a 0.20 rating, up +0.02 from last year’s 0.18 rating. That said, the show was down -0.05 from its year ago 0.35 rating among Women 25-54, pulling in just a 0.30 rating this year.

The Young and the Restless / The Bold and the Beautiful

At CBS, just 162,000 viewers separated “The Young and the Restless” (2.858 million) from lead-out “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.696 million) among Total Viewers. The week also saw “The Young and the Restless” average less than three million viewers for the eighth consecutive week, while “The Bold and the Beautiful” topped its lead-in among both unrounded Women 18-49 and unrounded Women 25-54, marking the third time in four weeks the half-hour series has done so among unrounded Women 18-49.

“The Bold and the Beautiful” was up +75,000 viewers week-to-week and up +95,000 viewers year-to-year.

“The Bold and the Beautiful” pulled in a 0.24 rating among unrounded Women 18-49 compared with the 0.22 rating pulled by “The Young and the Restless.” Among unrounded Women 25-54, “The Bold and the Beautiful” pulled in a 0.40 rating versus the 0.39 rating for “The Young and the Restless.”

Compared to how both shows performed one week earlier, “The Bold and the Beautiful” was down -0.02 among unrounded Women 18-49 and up +0.01 among unrounded Women 25-54, while “The Young and the Restless” was down -0.02 among unrounded Women 18-49 and down -0.08 among unrounded Women 25-54.

Compared to both show’s year ago performances, “The Bold and the Beautiful” was virtually on par among both demographics, while “The Young and the Restless” saw notable declines.

GMA3: What You Need to Know / NBC News Daily

The competition among the daytime news programs got much tighter this week, with “NBC News Daily” (1.179 million) topping “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.148 million) across the board. Compared to the show’s performance one week earlier, “NBC News Daily” was up +61,000 viewers. It was also up by +54,000 viewers year-to-year.

“NBC News Daily” saw its best viewership advantage over “GMA3” on record, topping the show by +31,000 viewers or +3%.

What follows is a breakdown of how daytime broadcast performed during the week of September 2-6, 2024 in Women 18-49, Women 25-54, Households and Total Viewers, including their performance during the comparable week last year.

Summary (Preemptions/Schedule Changes)*

  • On Monday, September 2, most daytime broadcast shows were corded as specials due to the Labor Day holiday. Ratings for the day are excluded from their weekly average.
  • “GMA3: What You Need to Know” reportedly aired amended repeats according to Nielsen, however, ABC News issued a press release on Tuesday noting the show managed to rank number one among Total Viewers (opposite “The Talk” CBS and “NBC News Daily” on NBC) for the 35th consecutive week. The ABC press release also noted that “GMA3” was up week-to-week in both Women 18-49 Viewers (83,000 vs. 79,000) and Women 25-54 Viewers (118,000 vs. 114,000). The network did not indicate “GMA3” airing repeats while also citing available figures are courtesy of Nielsen.
  • “The Talk,” “Let’s Make a Deal” and “The Price is Right” each aired amended repeats. As a result, figures for each show were (mostly) unavailable and were excluded from their weekly and season averages.
  • “The View” aired amended repeats the previous week which do not factor into the show’s weekly or season averages.
  • Only figures available to Soap Opera Network at press time are shown published below.
  • “The Young and the Restless” aired for just 53 minutes on Wednesday, September 4, per Nielsen. No reason was cited for seven-minute preemption.

Mixed bag again for B&B. Up slightly in one demo but down in the other. Up in viewers but HH unchanged. Still #1 in demos and ahead of YR.

Considering what a big story it was suppose to be the numbers for the rewrite are not impressive.

@Errol

Thanks for the numbers!!

The show in trouble is YR. They are down in HH, viewers and demos from last year. Alarming is their big drop in women 25-54.  0.52 a year ago down to 0.39? Yikes!!

I wonder if any changes are coming to YR? I haven't watched since Colleen Zenk left the show.

GH now below two million viewers for 21 weeks. Lucky's return so far has not been a good story. Sonny murdered Jagger in cold blood and that may have offended people. The show is now down 418,000 viewers from the week of January 15. December-January and April-May were the last times the show was on the plus side of two million viewers.

    • I'm sorry. I well remember Jake doing Doris but I have no independent memory of the story around it.  Krystle with a K Lake, sure, both Tony the Tuna stories & NOT.  And, Jake also impersonated a woman named Bunny Eberhardt but he didn't know she was a woman so there was no drag. This weekend I re-watched Kevin & Mac, GH, and my strong impression is exactly what it was when I watched it in real time: They did not let them look very pretty. Of course, I think the best ever drag on GH was Alexis posing as the Q butler.  In a different use of drag at AW one Halloween, Jensen Buchanan went as Charlie Chaplin & Judi Evans went as, I think, a male gypsy.

    • I'm not sure who wanted them to dump REUNION & instead do a "Dallas-like daytime show" but it seems that it def came from NBC to AW through Rauch, so, yes, it absolutely could have been his (cough-another-stupid?) decision!!!! I've just begun the new Lisanti book so maybe I will find out. (I waited for the kindle version to come out.) I would apologize for being so critical & so sarcastic, too, but, well, I'm not actually sorry!  Silverman was NOT a friend to AW.  And, I believe the critique is on point & deserved! I wanted to explain why I think the timing is off for the 90 minute show to be a reaction to the GH Luke & Laura story & its hype. Because, for sure, networks & production companies did react to it! The first 90 minute show was Monday, March 5, 1979.  And, there was some unknown amount of time ahead of that with people arguing about it & then, planning it.  The Luke & Laura wedding was mid-November 1981.  They were on the run from Frank Smith & stayed overnight in Wyndham's Dept. Store early August 1980.
    • terrible at using forums and inserting photos, but jake in another world had a drag persona named doris, anyone know the episode or year? http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/ffad19.jpg
    • Yes, I am familiar with Fred Silverman. Agree, the 90 minute AW a very poor decision by Silverman. I think Silverman was behind the decision to go with Texas.
    • Thanks -- you're doing God's work The Gio reveal was everything I hoped for and more. GH got it right. Head to toe, GM is a stunning physical specimen.
    • I really wonder how they'll handle Netflix's usual long breaks between seasons. That girl is going to grow up fast... makes me wonder if this wouldn't have been a better fit for HBO Max considering they're leaning into a more broadcast style of production model with The Pitt.
    • I agree -- I didn't suspect Ted, either. I think a lot of people are giving themselves way too much credit in predicting Ted's problems

And can I have a different take on Ted here? Yes, he's made a huge mistake with this Leslie debacle, and yes, he has to suffer and pay for it. But does that make Ted a terrible human being? I don't think it does. He made a horrific mistake over 2 decades ago, and as far as we know, he's been a good husband and father since. As far as we know, he hasn't strayed or violated his marriage since. He didn't know that he fathered another child, and thought he "removed" Leslie from his life. I won't blame Nicole if she doesn't forgive him, but I also won't blame her if she decides what they have and what they've had more than makes up for what he did. Ted is getting dragged far more than Bill is on these boards, and I think Bill is MUCH worse as a husband and father. How many times did he cheat on Dani during their marriage? How many times did he do vile things in his role as fixer? How much did he hurt his daughters by screwing their friend and marrying her? With Keith Robinson coming in as Ted, maybe we'll see a character change in direction and we'll discover that Ted has many flaws and always had a dark side. For now, though, I'm inclined to both be angry with Ted for hurting his family while also sympathizing with him. I know what you mean, but I do think that was intentional. So much was going on in that episode, and I think they decided not to let Nicole's reaction be lost in all that. Nicole will get those scenes that you're asking for.
    • That was the original point of me sending you her 6 airdates, so now with those, and the link to the daily episode guide I've provided, that should help you more easily find the additional Ruth Buzzi scenes. I will always repeat myself when it comes to defending my data that I've taken decades to research and compile. But, as you pointed out in a recent post, I am kind, so at least I will do it with you in a kind way as opposed to the usual social media way most people do with just getting rude/nasty. That's not my style, as you correctly pointed out earlier this week, and never will be.  So, all is well!

    • Ambyr Michelle continues to be *that girl.* She’s just a star, period. Elevates every scene she’s in on the sheer strength of her emotional realism and charisma. Can sell any dialogue. I wish the show veered away from the B&B-style scripting. TMG/Leslie’s tirade stood out, I suppose, but she’s getting a bit mustache-twirly. And I wish DD had more to do in that episode than stand and sob.
    • Well, that was down to CBS being weak and not being willing to just pulling the plug entirely. They didn't want to commit to cancelling the show in case they needed it for their schedule basically; plus they kept showing that they were willing to make cuts if needed to be.
