DAYS: Our hopes for the new HW’s

I’ve never been sure if the people who work on these shows read message boards like this, but in case they do, and since the new writers are currently in the infancy of their run at Days (They’ll be 9 months ahead by the time we get to see their material!), what would we like to see from them?

Realistically, we can’t ask for shorter film to air dates, and for them to do things outside their budget, that keeps the show running, but I would love to see certain stories.

More Hortons and less DiMera’s. The previous regime has ruined the DiMera’s for me. Stefano is dead. Rest them all and the predictable and boring stories that go along with them. Bring on the next generation of Hortons. There are literally so many options. Claire, Will, Nathan, Jeremy, Eli, Ciara (without Ben please) could all return with their families. Scotty, Sandy and Steven could all have children and grandchildren who make their way to Salem. Make the Hortons the center of the show, not the DiMera’s.

Make death a permanent thing in Salem. Back from the dead is such a lazy plot point. It’s more interesting for characters to be alive when they leave a show, then to let everyone false grieve and bring them back months later with little to no regard to what they were doing before their “death”. Again, Stefano is dead, let back from the dead’s be as well.

With that being said, before we make death permanent, please bring back Laura and Abigail. Both of these characters had horrible and unnecessary endings. They are to important to the history of the show to go out like they did. Fix it.

Please fix other mistakes like Bo and Hope’s and Belle and Shawn’s current states. Have Marlena be in stories with her family, and not in stories with pointless characters like Everett and Leo.

Write the show with a more serious and realistic tone. Soap operas are campy and unserious at times yes, but by writing the cheap JER rip offs that the previous regime did makes it painfully obvious, especially when you don’t have the budget to produce it. Look to the 60s and 70s for ideas. Days told melodramatic and riveting stories with a smaller budget than they had in the 80s and 90s and had a much larger audience because of it.

This is one of the things that finally got me to stop watching the show after many, many years....waaaaay too much emphasis on the Dimeras. They took over the whole entire show, and as a result DAYS lost its heart IMO, the Hortons and the Bradys. The Hortons are practically nonexistent at this point which I find so sad.

So, so many Dimeras. Why do we need Stefan? Even Johnny? Chad is a keeper, maybe EJ, but we don't need the rest of them. Kristen really needed a rest. If there was one single Dimera I'd bring on it would be Theo. It would be interesting to see him torn between the Carver and DiMera worlds, and I always liked his relationship with Chad.

I enjoyed a lot of RC first few years, but then I started feeling like I was watching Days fanfiction versus something professionally written.

I think I might want too much lol

Most of all, I think I just want it to be like a soap again. For it to have a well balanced, well thought out canvas without any biases or obsessions writing the show for them. And also, to not have everything be written like a big, stupid joke.

And of course, firing Greg Rikaart and killing off Leo once and for all.

I've said it before, but I think DAYS's issues are deeper than a headwriter, but maybe with both Alarr and Ron gone we can start seeing a real change?

I do wonder about Cwikly though - if she had issues staying on budget over twenty years ago, how long can she survive on the shoe-string budget?

I would hope that the writers start cutting out all of the unnecessary deadweight like Leo, Alex, Connie, Stefan, Gwenresa, Ava, and Bonnie. I also hope that they start phasing out the DiMeras by getting rid of Stefan and Kristen and only keep Chad, E.J. and Johnny around regularly. Kristen and Megan, (and probably Dimitri), should only pop in to cause trouble every now and then.

They also need to start rebuilding the Hortons by bringing back as many of them as possible including Will, Allie, Jeremy, Nathan, Melissa, J.J., Eli, etc., and if they do bring Jeremy back, I hope they actually acknowledge what Jeremy did to Stephanie all of those years ago and don't try to sweep it under the rug and they also give Jeremy an actual proper redemption arc if that's their intention.

The one thing that Ron actually did right was add in more diversity so I would hope the new writers continue that. I would hope that they keep the Carver/Grant/Price clan and they also keep Andrew and all of the other gay characters around. Maybe they could also bring Jada's sister Talia back at some point but it would also be okay if they ultimately didn't do that.

I would also hope that the writers leave characters like Everett, Gwen/Theresa and Leo far behind in the past and none of those characters are seen or heard from again.

  • Return of Families: I want to see the return and re-building of families in Salem. The Bradys, the Hortons and the Kiriakis'. And then, hopefully, re-introduce some of the older families like the Martins (ie: Scotty Banning), etc.
  • No More Camp/Slap-shtick Bullshït/Soap Tropes: Face masks, voice-changers, back-from-the-deads, Devil takeovers should all be GONE! No more of that bullshït. Focus on forward-moving stories that are thought-provoking and topical of the times. The "writer" really made a comedy of the canvas, and I know both Paula Cwikly & Jeanne Marie Ford have their hands full to fix this, but I hope they can do it.
  • Cut the Dead Weight/Return Those We Care About: Blake Berris (Everett), Elia Cantu (Jada), Stacy Haiduk (Kristen/Susan), Jackée Harry (Paulina), Leo Howard (Tate), AnnaLynne McCord (no1curr), Emily O'Brien (Theresa), Ashley Puzemis (Holly), Greg Rikaart (Leo), Josh Taylor (Roman; demote to recurring) & Robert Scott Wilson (Alex) could and should all be cut from the cast, and no one would miss them. Use their spaces to return those we want to see ⏤ Brandon Beemer (Shawn-Douglas), Christie Clark (Carrie), John-Paul Lavoisier (Philip), Colton Little (Andrew), Martha Madison (Belle), Austin Peck (Austin; temporary), Christopher Sean (Paul), Tanner Stine (Joey), Zach Tinker (Sonny) et al. Give us back some familiarity to the canvas. It's time. It's high-time.

I love how we’re all in agreement about Leo

Slightly off topic, but has there ever been a soap character so universally despised by the Soap Universe that’s been shoved down our throats like Leo has?

In terms of other character exits, I’m hoping Bobby-Everett, Connie and maybe Ava and Kristen are sent packing as well.

And agreed that Andrew/Colton Little is hopefully made full time as well. He wants it, his onscreen boyfriend wants it and the fans want it. So, what’s the problem lol

    • The timing is strange, though. How far in advance would they normally be on location? The Achille Lauro hijacking was on October 7, 1985. Nancy had arrived in Egypt in the storyline by October 18. But the character of Hawk, Chris' Native American friend from Arizona, had already appeared onscreen by September and brought a letter telling Chris to be in Egypt by October 25th.  Why did they already have the link to Arizona before the reason to cancel the shoot in Egypt?  The dust and the jar it came in were from Egypt though. Nancy bought it there and sent it to Mac as a gift before she came back to the states and followed Chris to Arizona.
    • Actually that is not what happened. Nor is the timing right for it to have been. We learned from a WOST interview with Pete Lemay  in 2006, which can be found on YT, that it was Fred Silverman's idea to do the 90 minute show. I don't know how much you know about him but he had these amazing successes as head of daytime at both ABC & at CBS. Then he came to NBC where basically everything he touched turned NOT TO GOLD but to shite. Some of the most expensive shows ever produced up to that time were huge flops. Although even he, like a broken clock, could be right on occasion. However, as we know, he was not right about the 90 minute show. As a matter of fact, afterward,  NBC programmers, who worked FOR him, were asked why they did it & they were quoted as saying it was because they couldn't think of anything else to try. It was a stupid idea from a man who had reached the point where he was throwing anything at the wall to see if it would stick.

    • I stopped watching Another World in 1990. Simply, lost interest in the show.  I had watched the show from 1973 to 1990. The 90 minute show started the decline of AW.  NBC panicked with expanding AW due to the GH hoopla. As mentioned above, 1982 was a trainwreck for AW.  The introduction of the Shea family, the movie storyline involving Jamie, and Steve Frame favoring Rachel over Alice. The writers went into that direction due to the forgettable performance of Linda Borgeson.

    • Ive seen that theory thrown out but the one thing against it is that Leslie and her family lived in Chicago. She only came back to DC last year after her husband died. Unless they say Alan made a trip to DC and died while away, she wouldnt know about that. However I do think the angle of her finding out that Martin was involved could work as that gives her leverage against Bill too for covering it up. She'd want to get revenge on him by threatening to have him disbarred
    • What a good write-up @Errol! Nice seeing the nod to Duplaix's lead.
