I have to go with some actor's mythical tales about fans.

1.  I don't believe anyone ever threw fruit at ATWT Eileen Fulton in a grocery store.

2. I don't think anyone ever asked OLTL Roger Howarth to rape them.

3. I don't believe anyone ever made a bet with their family for a steak dinner that was resolved by a letter to Soap Opera Digest.

Another World

There was a myth that Irna offered the show to CBS & they had no room for it on the schedule & she was heartbroken.

This is debunked in a document called The Creation of Another World. It is by Eddie Drueding with reporting by Lynn Liccardo & Elana Levine. It can be found on the Another World Home Page under Publications.

http://anotherworldhomepage.com/creation.htm

According to it, actually in 1963 NBC approached P&G/PGP about getting Irna Phillips to create a new serial for them. Details & names of sources are in the document.

The second most popular myth about AW is that it is a sister soap to ATWT

That it is not is covered in the document. Yes, both shows, including some others exist in an Irna Phillips universe but it does not make them sister soaps or spin-offs.

Much more information about BTS about the show beginnings is included also in the document.

I don't believe so.

In the Irna Phillips universe there were small cities clustered near each other. They were Oakdale, Illinois [ATWT], Flat Rock, Centerville, Somerset, [itself] Bedfordtown, Brookville, Ogden, Centerville, Bay City, Illinois, [AW] - Donna L. Bridges

They all represented the bedroom communities that surrounded Cincinnati, home of domestic product giant, Procter & Gamble.

I'm not sure how much intent counts but it was not Irna Phillips intent that these be sister soaps. The same way her use of the "world"  motif was not meant to create sister soaps.

Quoting from the document referenced upthread

That's AW. That may be the first contract role. Thanks.

Good question, You see them used in a sentence such as, "not a spin-off or a sister soap." Although you also see each term on its own, without the other being mentioned.

I've both been talking to people about this & also trying to noodle with my own thoughts. I think it is a preponderance of different factors. Perhaps including: same fictional universe, same creator, same production company, same style (family or adventure or escapist or mystery or gothic), maybe same network ... and if they have a number of these factors then they add up to being sister soaps.

Obviously this is (1) opinion and (2) a theory & definitely "in process" so I may say something different, say, on Tuesday!

So, for example that would make AMC & OLTL sister soaps but GH wouldn't be one with them.

And, I need to do research about The Young Marrieds & GH. People say they are sister soaps which didn't make sense to me since it was off the air before it was even established that GH's locale was Port Charles, NY. So, it seemed like a write back to me that Robin & Patrick lived in a suburb which is where TYM was fictionally located. Some people say it does make sense even though they get what I meant so I need to do some reading in some episode descriptions. Just have to make the time.

Originally, I think calling ATWT, AW and Guiding Light "sister shows" just referenced them being created by Phillips. Maybe there was some implied cache about linking them in the viewers minds. After Phillips' firing, it became more about them being sponsored by P&G.

    • Ron C breakdowns usually involve quick snip scenes.. and so far, it is apparent in spades.  I wish we had the longer scenes like we had in the previous few episodes. And I see Febreeze appeared again today.  More airtime/purpose than Ashley/Derek LOL
    • I loved Felicia and Donna. They were two of the reasons I couldn't stop watching the show even when the writing was horrible. I was never really a fan of Rachel's unless she was sniping at Cecile (my fave character!). But Felicia and Donna (especially Anna Stuart) are AW to me. Of course, it was around the time of their arrivals that I remember I started watching the show. I was 10 in '83. For me, they were always there. I wouldn't have wanted either of them to be killed off.  Rachel and Mac were okay for me but I never saw most of their relationship play or Rachel's previous work with Steve and Alice. I just saw her as there; the matriarch. Never a fan of Rachel and Carl. It made no sense whatsoever.  I did like Quinn and was shocked when they killed her off. Her and Zack were just starting to become a couple I wanted to watch. She should definitely have been a fixture on the show along with her family. Carter and Thomasina I thought were fun and a great couple, too.  That's the thing about being an AW fan. The show was always on the brink of greatness, but then it would shoot itself in the foot with stupid decisions from writing to cast exits, etc. They could just never quite get it together. The cast was amazing! It's the only thing that saved them for so long.
    • I LOVED LD on AW...one of my all time favorite characters! However, on OLTL, her character was pretty pointless from the word go. I think trying to make her this character she played decades before was also a bad choice. She should have been a brand new character that could have been tied into the current canvas better. Rae really had no connections or family on the show. Imagine if she had been brought on as a recast Melinda Cramer, freshly released from the hospital. She would have been tied into a major family, be Kelly's mother, and have some real drama to play opposite RS.
    • it's up  BTG Episode #48 - May 8th cbs.com https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/vEQupDSVKChQKTvVWgX8mrUj2kCJEQTv/ paramountplus https://www.paramountplus.com/shows/video/vEQupDSVKChQKTvVWgX8mrUj2kCJEQTv/
    • I agree DZ is doing good work.  It's nice to see him getting meaty material again.  It's just off. Sonny was also low key the voice of reason saying when talking about Gio which I don't love lol.  And, yes, Dante calling a 15? 16? kid who had a couple of beers reckless at heart is silly.  I think most people had a few drinks in high school.  In isolation, the scenes with Jason/Danny were good when he was talking about AJ's drinking problem.  If you ignore everything else about what Jason did to AJ it was a good historic throwback.
    • @janea4old Tricia Mann-Grant also called Leslie a narcissist in the ET special before it premiered. Thank you! Looking forward to it.
    • -- This is maddening. DZ is acting his ass off, but the script is a mess. As you said, if Dante came down hard on Rocco, these outbursts would make some sense. Comparatively, though, Rocco got a pass, and that's just insane. Dante's not only criticizing Danny and Gio, but the people who raised them. It's just nuts. -- And then Dante goes to his father -- the mob boss killer WHO SHOT DANTE -- to declare Danny "reckless at heart." JFC. -- Kai was in the hospital for that dislocated shoulder about 3x as long as Sonny was in the hospital for his heart. Make it make sense.
    • I'm really of the mind now that Leslie really did have that abortion and Eva isn't Ted or her child.
    • Isn’t it thrilling to get that kind of buzz from a performance again? If this show had nothing else going for it (and it has other real strengths, including the actress opposite her), that would be enough to keep me invested.
