Question for any and all SFT fans out there: how did y'all feel about Mary Stuart's musical performances on the show?  Did you enjoy them and look forward to them, or...?

I would say extended episodes for special occasions in general. The Doctors had an extended episode to mark its tenth anniversary in 1973, AMC aired a week's worth of hour-long episodes in the lead-up to RH's premiere.

One of my fave 70s soap trends is actually one I first noticed before I ever got into classic soaps - soap stars appearing as panelists/contestants on game shows. Bill and Susan Hayes were judges on The $1.98 Beauty Show, several LA soap stars appeared as panelists on Match Game (as well as Tudi Wiggins from Love of Life!), NYC stars appeared as celebrity contestants on Pyramid, various ABC soap casts played against each other on Family Feud, etc. This one continued into the 80s before slowly tapering out in the 90s.

Adding characters to opening title sequences. Y&R led the pack (though it wasn't the first - Never Too Young had done it back in '65), with Ryan's Hope, The Doctors, and Love of Life following suit. Interestingly, outside of Y&R, the big huge hit soaps didn't start doing this until the mid-80s and later.

Soaps being studied/discussed on a critical level. The Daytime Emmys, cover articles in mainstream magazines (TV Guide, Newsweek, People, etc), talk show episodes, books, etc.

I wonder if any of the soap characters were into 70's trends like of macramé ? I can picture SFT Mary Stuart as Jo uttering " If you will all excuse me, I'm off to my macramé class". I could also picture her making terrariums and talking to her plants.

There were also mood rings, pet rocks, and those self help group sessions. Did any character sign up for primal scream therapy ?

Lamaze classes started becoming trendy in the 70's.

Mary Ryan on Ryan's Hope went to lamaze classes while she was pregnant with Ryan; they even showed her practicing her breathing technique on at least one occasion. This was during the period when she and Jack Fenelli were separated, and she kept asking him to attend class with her.

I'm sure Erica's disco wasn't the only one. There's that ATWT episode from 1978 where the younger characters head to a disco later in the ep.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but when watching all of those great GL eps from the latter half of 1979, if Jackie Spaulding didn't proudly but cavalierly mention her condominium at least 5 times per episode, she never mentioned it at all.

Abortion was dealt with for the first time.

Erica AMC, Kathy SFT, Connie RTPP, Marianne AW and probably a few others  all had abortions and didn't suffer greatly as a result. And others considered it, but changed their minds.

And homosexuality was touched upon with Mike and Sharon on Days and Joanne/Kay on Y&R.

Inter racial relationships with David/Val on Days.

But these were isolates, definitely not a trend or even the beginning of one.

    • Looking at those totals it seems most contract actors are on a 1 or 2 week average guarantee. I assume contracts are still operating on 13 week cycles so you would have to know the particular actors contract starting date to work out their guarantee. The question remains as to what actors listed as contract are actually recurring? Bryton ?
    • Yep, that scene was at the conclusion of the Derek Thurston vs George Packard storyline, when Kay decided neither of them should run Chancellor.  By the time she put Victor in charge, Victor had been on the show for months & months with his Rolls Royce, his ranch, and Newman Enterprises.  SONY released some Y&R "trivia cards" in the late 1980s, and one of the questions was "who brought Victor Newman to Genoa City?" The answer on the back of the card is "Kay Thurston, to run Chancellor Industries", and it's a wrong answer lol.
    • I think someone said it did exist, but I can't remember.
    • The bit with the scarf reminds me of the fabled stuffed animal scene with Rick and Phillip. (That wasn't debunked, was it?)
    • Ohh, interesting. I instantly gravitated towards her in that episode. Of course I'm already hooked and want to know why she was trying to poison that older lady, but then how did the older lady know to switch the mugs so Susan drank her own poison...  but I have too many timelines I'm watching right now haha.  Oh, Bolger is definitely hot. I didn't realize he was on GL haha. I knew him from OLTL and other primetime stuff.
    • This is a effin shame. Eff Trump and eff the bastards that enable him.
    • I 100% agree but I think this is due to how the show is structured. It's a one family show which means there are no people in her age range that could be used as friends or contemporaries of her. The show definitely needs a second main family. I am glad someone finally said this. Especially now that the cast is gelling in their roles, he stands out like a sore thumb. No energy, no chemistry with anybody. He is just there.  I thought that was odd as well! The previous scene would've worked better as a tag for the credits.
    • That's the one and only Carrie Nye (Mrs. Dick Cavett) as Susan Piper, a deadly realtor. I don't want to spoil a lot if you ever want to see those episodes. She returns as another character in 2003. I think Grant has aged well and he always did a good job at being ripped without going too far, but he was never entirely my cup of tea either. I did think John Bolger was hot.
    • Totally agree. KKL looks great! It makes the Widge groveling so bizarre. Brooke needs to leave FC and with $B's/Liam's funding launch a rival fashion house with Hope, Rick, Katie and a secret designer. The best scenario is that Rick has been absent because he's been with very much alive C2, who is revealed on the runway as the secret designer. It'll never happen because B&B is comfortable just focusing on FC and the Forresters Marones v. Logans. But it'd been so much more interesting if the Spencers/Logans united.
