Now I thought this would be you posting the promo & predicting Vivian's successful return!

With Bo on DAYS when they switched from Peter Reckell to Robert Kelker-Kelly they'd been clever about the recast. They gave RKK a makeover to make him look more like PR than just good looking, right height, brunette with good hair & facial hair or not, whichever it was at the time.  Then they did the switch in the middle of a costume masked ball. And Robert's a capable actor so he fit & was called a success. There had been some doubt that anyone could "replace" Peter! But, then, when Peter returned you'd have thought he was a demi-god! His welcome was that warm.

Hard to argue with either of those, and I agree that both shows were invigorated by those returns.

I think Marlena’s return in the 90’s on DAYS was equally as successful and integral. As messy as John/Roman was, it gave us Sami’s many issues, the affair storyline, and Belle. Much like Luke and Laura and Roger’s return, Marlena was connected to every character and story- either directly, through her family, through Stefano, and her friendships.

A later one that was maybe not as well written overall and certainly the show was in rocky shape but still helped rebuild something the show had lost was Angie returning to AMC and Jesse being alive. The two of them together really worked, and carried over well to the online show.

Andrea Evans returning as Tina Clayton on OLTL in 1985 completely reset and revitalized the canvas, ratings and and the trajectory of the show for years.

I agree Debbi and Darnell back as Angie and Jesse on AMC was fantastic, the build up to their reunion at the train was insanely good, it’s a shame there wasn’t a long-term story planned for them as the actual Hubbard unit was complete, the casting on Frankie was phenomenal. I don’t know if they should have rushed them back together as they did and into a wedding with 4.5 months.

Though it was brief, Julie Osborn's return as Kathleen on AW was excellent. Bringing back Charles Keating at the same time brought many characters into the story. It also created the Kathleen/Cass/Frankie triangle. It was probably the first triangle where I couldn't decide between them.

    • Was Blake the product of Roger raping Holly, or did that come after when they were a couple?
    • I really wish we could see that episode...absolutely, my memory could be faulty, it was a very long time ago. I'm not going to contradict what the actors said--there has to be a reason it made them so uncomfortable that they talked about it in the press and complained to TPTB. I think that was the first one where they made the point that they wanted to educate the audience about the subject.
    • I just did with GL and its made me very happy!

Oh yes, trying to get into any soap from scratch starting post-2010 would be hard. I prefer to go back to the good ol' days, before the decline.
    • Can we talk about how iconic the 1994 tornado was on AMC? I was scanning through old episodes last night and came across this episode. The tornado was epic and the storylines/aftermath were so good (Julia's scar/Noah!; Jenny/Ray/Nola/Jesse in heaven with Tad, etc).  For 1994, these special effects and budget for this big event were amazing. 10 out of 10!  The only thing missing is Erica!  I can't recall where Erica was at the time, but I really wish she had been involved in this storyline.

    • On the way to her own engagement party? I've read that the show had trouble getting the audience to sympathize with Rita, but...that seems bizarre. Maybe I can understand the issue with the censors, given that at the time, rape wasn't depicted the way it is now, and marital rape was even less acknowledged.  Wasn't Chris Brooks' rape one of the first honest stories on the subject? I just don't think I could get into a show I didn't have a working knowledge of. I know it's a different era, but I really tried to get into GH once Maura West joined, but it just never jelled.
    • Yes it was! My mom and I convinced my dad to get one. He was--how shall I put this?--on the thrifty side, but one day he came home with one as a surprise. To this day, I'm convinced it fell off a truck. (He knew people with "connections."

) BUT, we had our VCR and we could watch our soaps. That thing lasted forever! It was built like a tank. Even when we got new ones with more features, we kept that one.

Blasphemy!  (Haha, I get it.  But, you should try watching AMC! 80s-90s was so good.)
    • I thought about saying how I resented the fact that those two newbies were tripping up the Puppetmaster of all Puppetmasters, when the best others could do was a stalemate (or less...). But, well...*sigh*
    • I read years ago that both Zaslow and Lenore both complained that it came off as a seduction because of CBS censors, so Lenore asked if she could say, "you raped me" to leave no doubt with the audience, and that Zaslow insisted that Holly's rape played realistically
    • Wow it’s official, Gatwa is out… https://www.avclub.com/ncuti-gatwa-addresses-doctor-who-finale-statement DW fandom on Reddit is in a furor over how things went down and apparent last minute scrapping of the original ending. Also…Billie Piper again really?
