Y&R Fires Entire Breakdown Writing Staff

Yeah and also what the network execs and audiences expect from soaps has changed drastically since those earlier talents were working. I don’t think any of them would thrive in today’s daytime environment. They’d want far more autonomy and ability to tell stories with integrity.

There has to be some connection between the pending writer's strike, budget considerations and these firings.  If these writer's aren't on staff on May 1, they don't need to be rehired when strike is over. Meanwhile, the show can bring in fi core or other cheap scab labor to write the outlines after the strike ends.  Josh and Mandy can write outlines for a few months until strike is over.

If they are preparing for a strike, there’s a chance Michael Conforti wasn’t fired because he went Fi-Core in 2007.   I don’t think Beall went Fi-Core so if she doesn’t again this time, maybe there’s a workaround because she’s a Producer now.

Kay Alden indicated she not only had to submit storyline projections to SONY and CBS, and also the outlines themselves.  That's really overkill, as far as network/production oversight.

(Henry Slesar from "Edge of Night" was another head writer who did his own outlines and some of his own dialogue, in the days when there wasn't so much oversight.  He was always listed as "Story by Henry Slesar.  Teleplays by Henry Slesar and Steve Lehrman.")

Pete indicated that once a script was written it would have to be vetted by the network, the sponsor, etc. & network "notes" were routine & would require that then the script be rewritten! Micromanaging.

And at a point nearer the end of his life than during his period of greatest activity in writing, he did a multi-part interview with We Love Soaps Net. In one segment the interviewer seemed to cover two things. (1) The dirty trick P&G pulled in withdrawing their support for his "Michael comes out" gay storyline & (2) the murder of Frankie Frame. About Frankie the interview took the tack that Lemay had created the Frame family so would be interested that one of his folk had been killed off. Lemay expressed that they would never have murdered anyone although they did kill off Val Dufour's Walter Curtin in a car accident. You could tell he was horrified at this modern idea that you had one character you wrote murder another character you wrote. No, the old legends would not fare well today. Whoever said that, yeah, right on.

I agree.  I'm more concerned about Josh Griffith being the Executive Producer than I am about him writing the breakdowns.

I'm obviously sorry the breakdown writers lost their jobs, but they weren't impressive.  (Probably because they function under a stale head writer.)

If he steps-up the writing, then the production values will obviously suffer.  If he takes the production job seriously, the writing will suffer (even more than it already is).  It's a no-win.   I don't think anyone's got enough time to be the executive producer, the headwriter, and the breakdown writer all at one time.  Not on an hour-long show.  Will be interesting to see him try, though.

That would make sense if the reporting about five writers being fired is true. Would make sense to keep Conforti.  Will be interesting to get confirmation of who exactly was fired. To keep Conforti will speak volumes about the production company's motive re strike, lower cost labor etc. And giving Beall a producer credit means she continues to work on the show during strike.

Ya know a soap can be cancelled before the end of the contract term. If they have goals they're supposed to be meeting, like ratings but not only that, & they're not hitting those numbers, they can get the axe early. AW was cancelled before their calendar date by months only & GEN was cancelled at 2 yr mark when their contract was for 3 yrs., so they lost a whole year which they really could have used! I think BEACH was "gypped" out of part of a year, too. However, that is all NBC. And, all while Susan D. Lee was head of daytime there.

And people often forget the title gave him the power after struggling with Conboy during Y&R’s first era.  But he didn’t do the day to day job of EP.  He had Conboy, then Wes Kinney, then Ed Scott.  And those three were talented EP’s with a point of view. He certainly had control, but he wasn’t doing the actual job.

If anything, if Josh wants to be a show head and run the writers room like primetime, he should be building up a strong team.  Not tearing it down.

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
