Soap Opera Mothers & Matriarchs

Similarly, Katherine never worked when MAB and team tried to make her everyone’s grandmother and friend. At her core Katherine was often a deeply insecure and miserable woman, to try to settle her in that type of a role felt like a betrayal, regardless of how old she was.

With a little better writing, Maggie on Days could fill that role.  Maybe Jennifer if the shows still on in ten years.

A lot of Katherine bashing of late.  First as her portrayal as a business power player then as a matriarch.  Guess some people hated to see her evolve at all from.  Just an observation, I don't have "a horse in the race."

I still say Abuella Santos could've been positioned as Bert 2.0

I think the problem with Maggie (outside writing-which agreed) is that she doesn't have strong enough ties to the canvas to be the matriarch.  She has mostly left the Horton side behind to marry Victor and when she doles out advice to people like Brady, Will, Sonny, etc you left thinking why they aren't just talking to their parents or grandparents about it.  She lives in a Kiriakis bubble and even if the writing changed or shifted she has spent years like that so any bonds she created would seem random at this point.

In theory, Jennifer would be more likely because she has stronger ties with more of the cast.

I guess I don’t see comments like that as bashing.  It was well established and in her nature to let her insecurities get the best of her, which often lead to drinking again.  Back when I was more attached to the show, she clearly had a mentor relationship with Nikki, but I never saw her as a matriarch.  They don’t have to be sweet either- Stephanie on B&B is the antithesis of someone like Alice on DAYS, but I would still codify them both as matriarchs.

With conscientious and considerate writing Katherine could have evolved into a sort of matriarchal figure but the writing was just never there to make that happen. For one, Brock only made sporadic appearances and many viewers like myself don’t remember seeing Brock as a regular character onscreen and by then, memories of Katherine “Mothering” Brock were long gone. The memories that are ingrained via flashbacks are Katherine, drunk and bitter and out of control. It’s not hating on the character, it’s recognizing what the writing for that character lacked in order to make most of us see Katherine as a genuine matriarchal figure in the style that soaps are usually known for.

Nikki was always much too insecure and self-absorbed to fill out that show’s matriarchal figure. I do think Y&R has an ageist issue in their lack of vision when it comes to writing characters of “a certain age” as both matriarchal and vital at the same time. One of the reasons why I referenced Kim Hughes on ATWT is because for a number of years the writing seemed to be able to strike that balance.

I agree that Doug Marland played Bob and Kim Hughes as the new more modern version of Chris and Nancy (patriarch and matriarch of the entire show).  Even going so far as to host the annual Hughes 4th of July picnic, and raising the flag during Bob's (formerly Grandpa Hughes's and Chris's) speech.   Bob and Kim slowly diminished as patriarch and matriarch of ATWT with later head writers, and especially after Bob and Kim's home completely stopped being used around 2000-01.  You can't have a real patriarch/matriarch if they never have scenes in their home.

You bring up an important point. The budget cuts that lead to a diminished idea of home and hearth, such a big part of seeing characters function as family. Having meals in the dining room, coffee and dessert in the living room, barbecues on the patio in the backyard. Without those things, you lose opportunities to seamlessly present that familial side of these characters as well as their place within the family. I always enjoyed those freewheeling gatherings when family and friends would gather, sometimes spontaneously. You get to see a character like Tom Hughes as a husband, a son and brother, Margo as a wife and sister, Kim as a wife, mother and stepmother and Bob as a dad, husband and stepdad.  Put Lisa into the mix for good measure and it really gets interesting, all in one setting.

If Dina Abbott had been returned as the vital businesswoman and force of nature she always was (and the actress is) maybe (again with good writing) Dina could have filled a matriarchal role, mentoring and advising the Abbotts and others she came into contact with through business and family ties.

Traci kind of functions in that role...

Yes! I don't mind Kay as business player if it gives her story outside of obsessing over Jill and Phillip. But bitter 70s-90s Kay made for great television and would have been more entertaining than the sweet old lady role that older actresses often become relegated to.

Bert Bauer started out being impossible and unlikable.. gradually softening to become a beloved grandmotherly type.  There was one scene where Bert was visiting Phillip in the hospital and after he told her what he did to upset Beth, she basically called him a jerk LOL

Maureen was a worthy replacement for Bert, but after she was killed off, there wasn't anyone to take over for Maureen.

Maureen was a natural fit to take on that matriarchal role. GL lost far more than they ever gained by killing the character off. In a strange way, had she stayed on the canvas, over time I could have seen Bridget eventually filling out that role as well, but the series would have needed to last longer than it did.

On Days the matter of the Missing Matriarch on Days could be simply fixed by Bringing a character of Mature age who has been off Canvas but is still alive, Like Marie Horton or Sandy Horton, it wouldn't hurt they're from the Show's Core Family

    • Yes, I am familiar with Fred Silverman. Agree, the 90 minute AW a very poor decision by Silverman. I think Silverman was behind the decision to go with Texas.
    • Thanks -- you're doing God's work The Gio reveal was everything I hoped for and more. GH got it right. Head to toe, GM is a stunning physical specimen.
    • I really wonder how they'll handle Netflix's usual long breaks between seasons. That girl is going to grow up fast... makes me wonder if this wouldn't have been a better fit for HBO Max considering they're leaning into a more broadcast style of production model with The Pitt.
    • I agree -- I didn't suspect Ted, either. I think a lot of people are giving themselves way too much credit in predicting Ted's problems

And can I have a different take on Ted here? Yes, he's made a huge mistake with this Leslie debacle, and yes, he has to suffer and pay for it. But does that make Ted a terrible human being? I don't think it does. He made a horrific mistake over 2 decades ago, and as far as we know, he's been a good husband and father since. As far as we know, he hasn't strayed or violated his marriage since. He didn't know that he fathered another child, and thought he "removed" Leslie from his life. I won't blame Nicole if she doesn't forgive him, but I also won't blame her if she decides what they have and what they've had more than makes up for what he did. Ted is getting dragged far more than Bill is on these boards, and I think Bill is MUCH worse as a husband and father. How many times did he cheat on Dani during their marriage? How many times did he do vile things in his role as fixer? How much did he hurt his daughters by screwing their friend and marrying her? With Keith Robinson coming in as Ted, maybe we'll see a character change in direction and we'll discover that Ted has many flaws and always had a dark side. For now, though, I'm inclined to both be angry with Ted for hurting his family while also sympathizing with him. I know what you mean, but I do think that was intentional. So much was going on in that episode, and I think they decided not to let Nicole's reaction be lost in all that. Nicole will get those scenes that you're asking for.
    • That was the original point of me sending you her 6 airdates, so now with those, and the link to the daily episode guide I've provided, that should help you more easily find the additional Ruth Buzzi scenes. I will always repeat myself when it comes to defending my data that I've taken decades to research and compile. But, as you pointed out in a recent post, I am kind, so at least I will do it with you in a kind way as opposed to the usual social media way most people do with just getting rude/nasty. That's not my style, as you correctly pointed out earlier this week, and never will be.  So, all is well!

    • Ambyr Michelle continues to be *that girl.* She’s just a star, period. Elevates every scene she’s in on the sheer strength of her emotional realism and charisma. Can sell any dialogue. I wish the show veered away from the B&B-style scripting. TMG/Leslie’s tirade stood out, I suppose, but she’s getting a bit mustache-twirly. And I wish DD had more to do in that episode than stand and sob.
    • Well, that was down to CBS being weak and not being willing to just pulling the plug entirely. They didn't want to commit to cancelling the show in case they needed it for their schedule basically; plus they kept showing that they were willing to make cuts if needed to be.
    • I'm sorry but clearly what I've said is not satisfactory to you. I have now read what you have to say, twice. As it happens, my interest at this point is looking at other mislabeled files to find this other Ruth Buzzi content. I do not see any point to each of us repeating ourselves, so I will leave it here.
    • It seemed to be your intent. coming into a thread I started and making multiple posts saying my data was wrong. In the next paragraph you say "Of course, I was suspicious from the very first instance where what I saw & heard did not agree with what it should have.  I'm very glad to know why." That certainly didn't stop you from immediately saying the data was wrong, until I provided additional receipts. Why did you not check the daily episode guide (for instance, this one for the 1980's) I posted for the world to see for exactly this reason...to help confirm airdates: http://daytimeroyaltyonline.com/days-daily-summaries-1980-1989-t15361.html? That is what you should be checking BEFORE you make any posts in the future like this, trying to suggest something from my data is incorrect. You could have also messaged me and asked me why your dates weren't adding up with what the correct data is. I would have fast forwarded through that video you posted, spotted Roman and Hope and immediately have told you that was the 11/1/83 episode.
