I absolutely ADORE that photo of Espy, McCarthy, and Houghton! Those first two years of Y&R had to be heavenly.

And of course, the ladies who lunch. Daytime used to be its own entity, and those people were happy to be who they were, doing what they were doing. The genre had dignity.

The first two years of Y&R were a soap fan's heaven. It was mesmerizing every day, and that original cast had charisma to spare.

I think I have a couple of interviews, from two different years, with the Ladies Who Lunch, which I'm sure you guys will enjoy. All those gals were such fun!

Thank you for sharing those Daily TV Serials reviews, which I love. I guess that last one was the last as I don't think the magazine saw 1978. It's fascinating getting a look in at each soap, especially as this is the only look in we'll ever get. And hearing Robin Mattson described as lightweight and not worth watching is so startling knowing what would be to come.

As Hope Bauer on The Guiding Light, Robin Mattson lacked substance and was simply...colorless. She was not awful, per se, but she was dull. After seeing two other dreadful actresses in the role of Heather Webber on General Hospital, I cringed when Mattson was hired. I thought that if they could NEVER hire a decent actress for the part, Heather should just be eliminated from the canvas ASAP. Surprisingly, Mattson had matured as an actress from her days on TGL and ended up being a decent recast on GH. She was pretty good on AMC too (although not-so-great as Delia Reid Ryan on RH). Some performers just click better in some roles than in others.

The other thing that gets me in those reviews is how blunt Jon Michael Reed is, like when he says Somerset is better off dead. Imagine a soap reviewer saying that in later years.

I would love to see the scenes of a drunk Susan at Emily's hospital bed. It sounds exquisite.

That write up of Peggy Brooks rape was interesting. It slams Pamela Peters Solow by saying she should not have been asked to  stretch beyond the limits of her talent and also mentions " Lets face it, she's no Trish Stewart. OUCH !

The soap press of today is pablum and lacks any integrity or purpose, but back in the 1970s, editors like Jon-Michael Reed told it like it was, and I appreciated their blunt honesty so much. Often what critics wrote corresponded quite well to what the audience was feeling. You don't see sharp, insightful commentary about daytime TV in SOD anymore.

I am one of those viewers who loved the long, intimate, drawn-out scenes focusing on character delineation and subtext...if such scenes ultimately had a purpose, a point. Masters like Harding Lemay, William J. Bell, Pat Falken Smith, Irna Phillips and a few others were so gifted that they could make the audience feel like we were eavesdropping on actual conversations between real people, so even the longest of scenes could be fascinating. The trouble is, many soap writers did not have the talent to write extended, character-driven scenes effectively, so the 10-minute conversations ended up sounding like endless "filler," which was deadly, and a struggle to sit through.

Pamela Peters was very cute and had a pixie-ish quality about her, which was quite appealing. Unfortunately, she was not the best dramatic actress in the world, which became obvious during Peggy's rape storyline in 1976. (Useless trivia, LOL: Peggy was raped on June 16, 1976.)

When Peggy was raped, Y&R showed flashbacks from when Chris had been attacked in 1973. This allowed the audience to compare the performances of Trish Stewart and Pamela Peters, and it was easy to conclude that Stewart was the far-superior actress. (Still, IMHO, Peters had more skill as an actress than many of the hair models we have had to endure on soaps during the last few decades.)

Pamela Peters kind of reminds me of Judy Strangis (remember her) ? Strangis was best known for Room 222 with Karen Valentine and as Dyna Girl with Deidre Hall as Electra Woman. Pamela Peters appeared several times on 222.

I have 2 comedy movies of the week All My Darling Daughters (1972) and My Darling Daughters Anniversary (1973) where Robert Young plays widowed Judge Charles Raleigh the father of 4 very different daughters. It reminds me so much of the Brooks family. Strangis played the youngest red headed daughter (ala Peggy Brooks). In the first film all 4 daughter wind up getting married on the same day. Eve Arden is the exasperated wedding planner. The other daughters are played by Sharon Gless (pre Cagney & Lacey), Fawne Harriman (Somerset), and Darlene Carr. Fawne's fiancee is played by Colby Chester (Michael Crawford Y&R). In the second film where the widowed Judge (Robert Young) gets remarried and the girls celebrate their 1 year anniversary,  Fawne must have been busy on Somerset and her role was recast with Laura Parker. Ann Lee (GH) appears as the Judge who marries Robert Young and Ruth Hussey.

I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying the thread. It's hard to know what to post; what will interest the SON community, but I am trying to upload material from many different soaps and stars and hope something, anything, hits a bulls-eye with readers.

Yes, EM had a daughter, Mary Ann Anderson, whom the actress adopted later on. I spoke to Anderson personally, when she was selling a biography of EM which she had written. Very interesting.

That's an apt comparison, comparing Pamela Peters to Judy Strangis. Both young actresses were cute and perky, and quite pleasant to watch in light roles, but I would not cast or expect them to do well in heavier parts, like...Anne Frank or Helen Keller. On Y&R, Peters was appealing as Peggy until she was asked to stretch beyond her range. I definitely wanted her to remain on the show, as part of the Brooks family and as an original cast member, but I preferred when the heavier material rested on more capable shoulders like Trish Stewart, Janice Lynde, Julianna McCarthy, Jeanne Cooper, etc.

I wonder how Strangis would have been in the role when Peggy was recast in 1979 ? I know Patricia Everly briefly assumed the role before Peters returned in 1980.  Strangis supposedly left acting in the mid to late 80's because of a stalker. She has done voice work only.

    • One more thing on Tuesday's episode, did anyone else notice the weird blocking? Belle and Eric were thanking Sarah, and worrying about Lyme Disease (which must be a red herring, I can't believe we're watching a PSA about inspecting for tics).  Then, Belle turned to EJ and threatened him with a lawsuit.  EJ acted as if he hadn't heard the entire conversation that was happening two inches away from him.   I like EJ, but a little of silly/mean EJ goes a long way.  His sarcasm during that scene felt out of place, regardless of Eric's presence.  When he bugs his eyes, and feigns innocence, it is a little too OTT for my taste.  I understand that he was the punching bag for most scenes, but EJ feels more mature than resorting to funny faces.  And, isn't rather quick to worry about Stephanie's sales, she just debuted the book yesterday in their timeline?
    • I dont think he knew Leslie was staying there. I know this is all for the drama and mess which Im here for, but Vernon really could have easily rented a small studio space where he and Sharon could practice lol.
    • I understand that no one could ever replace Bernau, but Ron Raines is somewhat of a different beast. Still great (to me) though. He spent his entire TV run in one role, that was impossible to do justice correctly.
    • Again, Bernau's illness impacted that. It's pretty obvious Pilon was always meant to be temporary. I read an article from that period that said he was working on both Ryan's Hope and GL at the same time. So he wasn't on contract for either show. (Maybe that explains somewhat why his performance was so low energy, because he was overworked doing two soaps). Later, they put him in the opening and in commercials for the show. That must have been because they were certain Bernau was not returning. Around that time, they approached Zaslow about being the permanent replacement for Bernau. He turned them down and suggested coming back as Roger. Pilon stayed so they could re-introduce Roger and write an exit for Alan. I'm guessing if MZ had not wanted to come back, they would have had no choice but to keep Pilon (which I don't think they wanted, or maybe Pilon wasn't interested) or send out a casting call for a new Alan. I think they wanted to avoid that because they were really determined not to let the nature of Bernau's illness to become public knowledge. At this point, they were still keepin up the fiction that he was going to return even while this stuff was happening BTS.   Yeah, it seems crazy now, but people forget how stigmatized AIDS was back then. I'm convinced the idea to ask Zaslow to take the role came about so they could replace Bernau as quietly as possible. Everyone would have been so surprised it would have taken the focus off Bernau not returning. It makes a kind of twisted sense. Still, thank goodness Zazlow said no and they said yes to his suggestion to return as Roger. The way everything worked out gave GL a few more strong years. I guess it's the nature of soaps, you never know what things in real life will end up strongly impacting the show, both negatively and positively. (Something just occurred to me. If Zazlow HAD said yes to playing Alan...he would have had to play being in love with Reva.

    • I truly do not understand why this has not happened. It's so un-Carly-like not have confronted Joss already.
    • He definitely had it going on back in the day
    • I have long given up on logic and Mayor Laura Collins! It makes about as much sense as Luke being elected mayor over Lee Baldwin in the 80’s, maybe even less sense. She committed manslaughter as a teenager, was involved with a mobster (I guess credit for them taking Smith down), had a shoot out in her home and killed another mobster in self defense, thought she bludgeoned her stepfather to death, then was catatonic for years. Her current husband had a twin that was a serial killer, had his own breakdown that threatened lives, and most recently hid his brother for treatment and that allowed Ryan to escape and kill again. And had hook killer Esme as a houseguest and is raising her child. I don’t care for Sonny anymore but their relationship is just another thing that involves suspension of belief to watch the show. I wish someone on this show would remind these adults that they used to pull way worse stuff than this! I would love a scene where Laura is sitting with Lulu and tells her while she is not happy this is nothing compared to what she got up to when she was young, and maybe even some understanding that she would also do stupid stuff if she believed in the cause. Olivia reminding Dante that he was wild as a teen and this isn’t that. Felicia reminding Anna that they were being shot at when pretty close to Emma’s age. These characterizations are just so basic. Have some fun with the actual history of the show. That kind of wink would mean more to me than just name dropping some random fact.
    • There are no dumb questions here, we've all known each other long enough to fill in information without shaming each other.  We want you to be happy @carolineg.  Your POV as one of the few women here is vital. So, please, I hope you never feel as if any question, idea, or opinion is ever silly or stupid.  Your daily reminders about the realities of manicure and menstrual management has become a part of the personality of this thread. As for Hank, while I'm confident there's a plan in place.  It is frustrating that they announce these casting so far in advance that it is tough as an audience and wait it out until the thing happens.  I'm happy they didn't blow it the second Mike was in town, a week after meeting Liam. So, it is a slow burn. And, conveniently, he lets us know when his episodes air.

Speaking of silly stuff, is anyone bothered by the placement of Tony's pocket on his shirt?  It is so odd that whatever bargain bin they found it, would choose to place a huge black pocket over the floral design?
    • I think his full name is Chadwick.  I remember, back when the previous actor was playing him, someone called him Chadwick a couple of times.  It may have been Stefano.
