I've always been touched by the inherent sadness of Corrie's exists, especially the long-running female characters. Elsie's silhouetted stroll down the street as voiceovers play from her past gets me the most.

The video cuts off but the slow fade in of the Corrie theme is just the icing on the cake.

Karen's (defeated and depressing) exit from Christmas 2004 also springs to mind, especially the use of the theme music at the end:

Dot and Ethel's last scenes on EastEnders:

Dennis dying in Sharon's arms:

Kat finally gets her Happy Ending for her first exit - her first arc was amazingly written and acted. Latter stints weren't written as well, but her first stint was magic for a character arc.

Zoe's exit from 2005 - The "You Ain't My Mother" reveal was not just for shock, that story had a profound impact on both characters for those 5 years. The final goodbye between Kat and Zoe (which has since been ruined by hack writers) was touching and wrapped it up nicely at the time.

The Pat and Janine scenes from Janine's 2004 exit. Charlie Brooks and Pam St. Clement were amazing together. It's not on YouTube, so here's a Dailymotion link:

The stuff with Stacey and Jean and the ending where Stacey looks into an old photo with her brother Sean before Julia's Theme starts playing. Stacey's early material was her best material IMO.

I love Pat and Janine's relationship.

Love Elsie, Bet and Hilda. I love the Dot/Ethel story too. Thanks for posting the Pat/Janine stuff as I was looking for those scenes last week.

That reminds me of the end of "Upstairs Downstairs". The house has been sold and Rose walks through the empty rooms and hears voices from the past before leaving though the front door and walking away.

Knots Landing had a good scene like that as well, when Valene moved back into their house on the cul-de-sac.

Elsie's exit was so understated yet also unbearably sad, especially knowing Pat would be gone within a few years.

Corrie had a real sense of melancholy for its first few decades, yet also had trust in viewers to not manipulate them the way that Aidan's suicide tried to do.

Seeing the Rita and Bet "PALS?? PALS!!!???" scene on here reminds me that a few weeks ago when Rita learned Norris had sold the Kabin, she shouted "PALS???!!?" I wonder if it was an homage...

Anyway, I think this story is the finest EE ever told. I hated the 2017 revisit but at least it didn't ruin the original.

(the Arthur/cop scenes in the above clip were very controversial, but they were honest - something EE of modern years rarely is)

Possibly, mind you Peggy pushing Chrissie into Den's grave is one of my favourite moments (in 2005). I really liked when Peggy went to Spain for Frank's funeral and he wasn't dead.

I could watch Janine Butcher all day long. Charlie Brooks is a legend.

    • Thanks for that. It was great to see her in an interview. She's very likable. Although it was somewhat confusing. What new soap is she talking about going on audition for in 1973. Was it The Young and the Restless? The editing around that part was weird and choppy. I felt like there was a chunk missing or something. And I'm not sure why she was saying she got colorectal cancer from HPV and said it's because she never got the HPV vaccine but then said she's never had anal sex. I'm not a doctor but that didn't seem to make any medical sense. I don't know. Maybe I'm tired. It just seemed like some of this interview didn't make sense.
    • If it helps any, the last script cover from the Elman papers that I have is from episode #3,736 airdate November 15, 1977. Writers are the Hollands with Frank Salisbury.
    • B&B really does look incredible. The lighting and the polished sets have made a significant difference how visually appealing the show is now.
    • I found the problem with the Labine era was that the show lost some humour when the Labines came on and it could be dull. They also didn't seem to understand some of the characters. As others have said, it looks fantastic in comparison to the next regime but I just remember boredom being the primary response.
    • Something I didn't realize: Frank Ashmore, who played Monica's investigator Corrigan in 1981, was also Victor, the third guy in the cockpit, in Airplane!
    • Thanks, maybe I will skim through those episodes.  I have previously binged late 1985 through early 1987; April-June, August 1992 (I skipped Carlo Hesser murder trial), Jan-March 1995 and I began watching in 2006. I just struggle to stay consistent with routines especially binging routines haha
    • I could've sworn we went over the Bobbie thing a while ago, and saw her introduced to Rick and Lesley as "Nurse Barbara" in very late '77? Or was that early '78? I know the clip is online. Jackie always credited Marland with creating her IIRC.
    • Thanks.  Loon Lake - very on the nose. With that "dad" outfit Bo looks even more like Cassie's father...
    • Luna parachutes herself into Llanview at the end of September 15th 1991.
    • That lengthy flashback does make me wonder if she threw out a lot, but I agree it may have been too easy an urban legend. Would these have been her very first episodes? I imagine you could feel the big difference when Bobbie arrived, alongside the Quartermaines filing in, the return of Heather, and Lesley/Rick/Monica/Alan heating up. It does remind me that there must have been some dud moments in the 60-minute format we just don't see because little of the period is available in full.  I wonder how much longer the Dantes lasted under Marland.  David Hamilton is so disgusting. I appreciate the show making him disgust as some shows when they have stories about older men or women manipulating teens aren't as honest.  I can't see this Rick being friends with him. Chris Robinson's Rick, on the other hand, I could believe.
