I definitely think it was a factor. Still, there’d been deafening buzz re: Ledger’s “Oscar-worthy” performance while the film was *still shooting.* He probably would have still gotten the Oscar as a “make-up” award for Brokeback had he lived.

The cynic is me thinks this is a shameless attempt to secure an “Argo”-like makeup Best Picture Oscar for “A Star is Born.” (I don’t think Best Actor is as much his priority.)

A Star is Born is the product of severe payola and an obnoxious Oscar campaign from Warner Bros/Cooper/Gaga's respective camps. I have no sympathy for Cooper being let down by not having a Best Director nomination, especially for a story that's been told 3 TIMES ONSCREEN.

Luckily Hollywood has seen right though all this and has not been awarding it, despite the bought for press in the Fall suggesting they would.

I have no real sympathy for him but I don't know why some are upset he admitted to being disappointed he didn't get a nomination. People always say they don't like Hollywood fakery - for once, somebody was not being fake.

I can sort of see why people thought Bradley was whining because he’s a debut filmmaker and Spike Lee is 35 years into his storied career and only now receiving his first Best Director nomination. But yeah I’m sure he was disappointed. The movie had been hyped to the gills since early fall, and he was thought to be a frontrunner. It’s hard to not buy into all of that.

They are really, really trying to push momentum for this film before final voting starts. Of course, that’s somebody’s job (a whole bunch of people’s jobs actually), and they have an opening in an unsettled Best Picture race. Not sure the push has been handled the best, though.
