I think when Frank and Doris Hursley, the creators wrote the show, Steve and Jessie being platonic friends was probably part of the show's original "bible", right along with the concept of never giving the show a specific location.  Up until around '76 or '77, there was no "Port Charles", which in retrospect, seems so strange!  I agree with the other posters in this thread that Gloria Monty did not do right by either of the show's original leads.

When I read the OP it listed Laura first, then Luke and I kept wondering if I felt it was him or her that was the MOST iconic, but you are right. They are iconic together. Each on their own is fine but lesser.

I have to say I think Erica Kane wins this one if it's from all soaps. Do you all think that's the character name most non-soap fans would have heard? Or Luke & Laura?

In the 1980s universe, that's what universe!  He was a rock star, had a Top 10 song (didn't "Rock ON" hit #1), Danny & Cricket ate the show and droves of young viewers in the 80s were obsessed with them- that is when he achieved his ICON status.  If only 90s Danny ever existed, then no.  But 80s Danny?  For sure.  Hell, Terry Lester left the show because of that couple (mainly Lauralee I've heard).

BTW, I've actually met Michael Damian (he came into the Chili's I worked at one day for lunch with his wife and in-laws).  Super nice guy.

ICONS from soaps that I watched, but were never "MY" soaps-

AMC-

Jeff Martin

Tad Martin

Liza Colby

Jenny Gardner

Palmer Cortlandt

Angie & Jesse (much like Luke & Laura- Iconic Together)

Alan Spaulding

Buzz Lewis (for other reasons entirely)

Harley Cooper

OLTL-

Carla Gray Hall

Victoria Lord Buchanan

Dorian Lord

Asa Buchanan

Tina Lord

Gabrielle Medina

Carlo Hesser

Marco Dane

Megan Gordon

Bo Buchanan

Cord Roberts

PASSIONS-

Timmy the Doll

date: Tuesday, May 27 | Christopher Dunn, Lynn Martin | Steven Williford I feel bad for Chelsea; she's exploring her feelings, and they're getting [unintentionally] hurt. But I love the support that Katherine has for her cousin. Bradley, you deserve one hundred times better than Deadbeat. So much more. Anita essentially tossing Tracy out... whew. She's done. DONE. Ouch... Chelsea hit the nerve with Katherine. How interesting... I feel like Tracy is becoming the mirror Anita has been avoiding while being a Dupree. What are these top secret things she's harbouring? I really hope Jessica's interest in Tyrell is genuine, because if it isn't, it might just destroy him. Back alley meetings? Your family? As if Bradley is not part of your family... Deadbeat, sit your ass down. Hey, Childbride, lower your damn voice. You're in the country club, not the country field where your ass belongs. And oh God, she's knocked up. Whew... here we go! Dante Greene, what control did this man have? But I appreciate that Anita and Tracy are uniting together; I pray that Sharon joins them soon. I love how easy Katherine and Tomas are with each other; it's smooth, it's natural and it's blooming in all the right ways. Hayley is about to battle the Dupree women for all she's worth. I am calling it right now. The unwavering support Vernon continues to provide to Anita is paramount; I adore them as the couple they are. Notes: Mike Manning (Bradley) continues to show up time and time again in scenes with Brandon Claybon (Deadbeat), who brings nothing to the table. There is an extreme lack of romantic chemistry between them. I'm wondering how different Dante Greene is going to be in comparison to Berry Gordy Jnr; we know the true history of Diana Ross and the Supremes, but how different will it be with Anita Williams and the Articulettes?
    • This episode is beyond excellent Could have waited on tge Trina Kai scenes  but regardless  great soap
    • Haha same! I didn't like her in the beginning, but over time, I've really grown to love to hate her as a villain.  I can't wait to listen to today's new episode later tonight! I've been waiting for the mom and dad (Crystal/Vincent) to have an interaction, so I'm happy to hear it's today.
    • I've always really been enjoying the show. It's very well produced and has so many soap stars in it. I was just listening to ep 7 on YoutTube and can say I'm hooked. There was an intense scene with Crystal Chappell and Vincent Irizarry about halfway through that was GOOD! Is it bad I kind of like Mina? I know she's supposed to be the main villian
    • This isn't a bad episode, but I'm finding myself not as engaged. Must be the lack of Eva and Leslie. No Nicole, Dani.
    • Yes!! I didn't realize it before, and had a busy weekend, so wasn't here much

Wow, what happened to AMC this week? Crashing from 8.4 to 6.6.. I mean, I know they used to go up and down much more than they do today, but this seems like a harsh drop (from 7th to 13th). And nice to see Y&R's first weeks
    • Why did they cut Chelsea coming out to her grandparents? We should have seen that
