Dallas was the only big four primetime soap to win in one of the main drama series categories at the primetime Emmys. Barbara Bel Geddes won 1980 Lead Actress and the rest of the race was Lauren Bacall, Mariette Hartley, Kristy McNichol, and Sada Thompson.

Dallas also earned eight nominations in the main drama series categories.

Drama Series: 1980 and 1981. Winners were Lou Grant (1980) and Hill Street Blues (1981). The rest of the races were Family (1980), The Rockford Files (1980), The White Shadow (1980 and 1981), Lou Grant (1981), and Quincy M.E. (1981).

Lead Actor: Larry Hagman (1980 and 1981) and Jim Davis (1981). Winners were Ed Asner (1980) and Daniel J. Travanti (1981). The rest of the races were James Garner (1980), Jack Klugman (1980), Ed Asner (1981), Louis Gossett Jr. (1981), and Pernell Roberts (1981).

As fans of CBS' long-running series, "Dallas" know, when Sheila Foley, the beautiful femme fatale (with, perhaps, some emphasis on the fatale, if you please!) interrupted Bobby and April Ewing's honeymoon in Paris on this season's opener on November 2, .she sent Bobby spinning off into several upcoming episodes of desperately seeking his missing bride. Susan Lucci, who plays the lovely Ms. Foley, describes her character as a mystery woman with, shall we say, a different agenda from the one favored by Bobby and April. And, she's wonderful to play," added Susan, who knows a thing or two about portraying vixens and villainesses, having played the oftwedded and frequently bedded, and compulsively manipulative Erica Kane Martin Brent Cudahy Chandler Montgomery Montgomery since "All My Children" debuted in 1970.

"I was delighted when I was asked to play Sheila," Susan said. "Obviously, there must be a reason why 'Dallas' and 'Knots Landing' have survived for so long. They're both such good shows and so well written and with wonderful casts. So, of course, I thought it would be a good idea to take the role. And," she laughed, "I felt I could deal with having to go to Paris to do it." Susan Lucci was back in Pine Valley — or rather, New York City, where the "All My Children" studios are located — when we spoke. The past several weeks had been a veritable moveable filming feast for the lovely star. She'd been in Paris for "Dallas" and in Pittsburgh for location shooting of her recently aired ABC film, "The Bride in Black" in which she costarred with David Soul, and which proved to be one of ABC's highest rated flicks. Now, having been part of the "Dallas" phenomenon, perhaps she could tell us all what Larry Hagman — J.R. Ewing himself — was really like. "Sorry," Susan replied, "I didn't get a chance to meet him. But I certainly hope to one day. My scenes in Paris were with Patrick Duffy and Sheree Wilson (Bobby and April). Everyone else in the 'Dallas' cast was in Los Angeles shooting their scenes for the series. And by the way, I can't say enough about how warmly I was treated by Patrick and Sheree and by Leonard Katzman the producer. He's one of the creators of he series and he directed the episodes I'm in."

Finally, if she had to describe in just one sentence her entire experience in becoming part of what will be the "Dallas" legacy, what would she say? "That's easy," Susan said: "It was fun — and that's the truth'.

Having Susan Lucci appear on one of the primetime soaps was a no-brainer, but I wish she'd been on FC instead.

Producer stirs 'Dallas' mania By STEVE REICH

Phil Capice has the most important job on series TV — producing 'Dallas." Capice is determined to make "Dallas" more popular than ever as it enters its sixth season this fall. Here is what this powerful honcho said on "Dallas"- related issues in a interview with TV Week in Phoenix:

The big fire cliffhanger: "We'll know what happens in the very first episode. We won't milk the situation. I can assure you that we won't continue the fire for two or three weeks."

The "Dynasty" blaze: "We didn't try to imitate "Dynasty's" blaze. The first time I read about their fire was in the National Enquirer. We didn't know anything about their fire at all."

"Dynasty": "It's a good show. But they are more interested in incident, we in character. They are a lot different than us."

The Enquirer: "Nobody from our show is permitted to talk to them. We ignore them completely. I read it only to find out what incorrect things they are saying about Dallas.' "

Barbara Bel Geddes: "She will not be in the first couple of episodes because she was recovering from her quadruple heart bypass operation. She will not appear in any of the segments shot in Texas. It would be too taxing for her to travel. She will be away plot wise, meaning on vacation with Clayton Farlow.".

Timothy Patrick Murphy: The Mickey Trotter character will be leaving us during the course of the season. Timothy won't have plastic surgery and turn into Chris Atkins. They've already done that number on 'Dynasty.' '

Wardrobe: "We have a substantial budget but it is less than "Dynasty's." There are no designer clothes on our show. Our people buy their clothes in shopping sprees. The only exception is Barbara Bel Geddes who has her clothes made to order by designer Jean Louis. Miss Ellie's' clothing needs are very special. The simplicity of her attire is all very intentional."

'"Dallas relationships "We don't like to keep any couple happy for too long. That's our .formula."

"Dallas" reruns: "There is a problem in expecting devoted fans to watch an episode twice. Still, we do a lot better ratings-wise than other series in the summer."

Contracts: "All our contracts with actors run out in the 1984-85 season. We are very concerned about retaining their services."

MASH ratings record: "I had mixed feelings when they topped our Who Shot JR.?' episode It was like watching the breaking of a home-run record."

Lois Chiles bedding J.R.: "That was essential to the plot. It wasn't gratuitous sex at all."

"Dallas: The Movie:" it's on hold and our plan is to start up production at the end of this season."

Future of soaps: "We are reaching the saturation point. All of them don't work, witness the failure of "Bare Essence." The novelty is certainly wearing off."

The psychic might've been technically wrong here, but creatively right.

@Paul Raven The shade at Dynasty is very funny. He tried but could not hold it in. Alas, due to choices Dallas people made, in the end the shows were not that different. The main difference is in the last years is Dallas never would have had a Sable (Alexis too but Alexis is not really at full powers by then).

Primetime soaps as a genre peaked from Fall 1982 to Spring 1985.

Season 9 was when Dallas tanked. Spring 1988 feels like the natural end point of primetime soaps as a genre. To me Dallas was effectively over season 12. The final two seasons were a waste of time.
