The Odd Couple: Discussion Thread

THE ODD COUPLE – THE ODD COUPLE stars Matthew Perry as endearing slob Oscar Madison and Thomas Lennon as uptight neat freak Felix Unger, two former college buddies who become unlikely roommates after the demise of their marriages. It’s not long after Oscar lets Felix move in that Oscar fears he’s made a monumental mistake. However, despite how exasperated they make each other, these mismatched friends agree they can help each other move on from their divorces and somehow make this crazy living arrangement work.

Wendell Pierce and Lindsay Sloane also star. Matthew Perry, Emmy Award winner Joe Keenan, Bob Daily, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum are executive producers for CBS Television Studios.

While remakes generally make me groan, I've said for a while now that Matthew Perry belongs on a Multi-Cam sitcom on CBS and not in those single-cam ones that failed on ABC and NBC, so I hope it's a success. Maybe give it the Post-Big Bang Slot.

I'd love to know that myself. No matter who's playing the other role, Matthew Perry IS Felix.

Honestly, if not for his illness and the fact that this will not be taped in NYC, I'd rather see Michael J. Fox as Oscar. His take might not be as sloppy, but I think he could capture the other qualities about him very well.

Even if he does, though, I wouldn't feel too bad for him. After all, "Mr. Sunshine" and "Go On" will one day fade into the recesses of our minds. But "Hello Larry"? That, I'm afraid, will never fade away.

This was awful. I never watch sitcoms but for the Odd Couple and Matt Perry I decided to give it a shot. It is anti-funny and I made it through one segment and the meager credits and theme before I gave up.

Matthew Perry is all wrong for this role. He should have been Felix. The guy who plays Felix was too subdued to be Felix. Nothing was funny and yet the fake laugh track never stopped. This easily is the worst three minutes of television I have seen all year and renews my resolve to not watch sitcoms. Friends was the last one I watched I think, and I doubt I will watch another any time soon.

God I hope it improves. This just felt off. Oscar isn't sloppy enough and Felix isn't fussy enough. (though DAYUM, that yoga pose was amazeballs). I've seen that Felix dude around---and I've never found him funny. And Perry's brand of fluster doesn't come close to Klugman or Matthau's genuine surliness.

Nice try with imitating Tony Randall's hhhhooonnnnnnkkkk.

    • I admit...I too thought of Penny and Good Times at that ending with SilkPress.
    • Yes, just so.  Thanks for the info. I could tell this was going to be a big thing with ShawnD in this danger! Especially love that the little guy is Andrew!
    • I think the shocker would be if he's NOT playing Dumas. That's where Josh Griffith plays most of his stories. Now they have Cole "self-isolating" because they don't want to put up that hospital set. Will Cole cough himself to death at the GCAC? What a "storyline." I can't believe how much JG is playing with us regarding Nick and Sharon. The teasing has become pathetic, especially for Shick fans who want them back together. My guess is that he'll reveal his real name once he is exposed.
    • Maybe we'll meet Leslie's mama who'll be a former Articulette and they'll build the rival family from there that a lot of people seem to think is missing. It'd make sense considering Anita's been hammering on about going on tour and reviving her music career.
    • hahaha at the Brennan shade.   But even I saw this and have to agree. What's really sad is that some of the person on that list could easily have a love interest that is on the canvas. They just need to be written for.
    • The thought has crossed my mind. Tricia Mann-Grant did say in her EW interview w/ MVJ and DD, that Leslie wants to be a Dupree just as bad as she wants Eva to be. I believe now that's the direction they are going in, that maybe she is just obsessed with the family. I could be wrong though.
    • True. But I have always had mixed feelings about that twist. Since I love the Damian storyline which already had twists and turns. Also I could not wait for a new powerful AND BLACK businessman to mix it up at some point with Victor. It just seem like another twist that was added on for twist sake. And also for a character (whether I love him or not) to hijack a new and refreshing storyline so they can be propped.    Once good thing that I can say about JG is that he loves to keep the Abbotts in rotation. So I could see that happening with Diane. I don't think she has mentioned her backstory, either. I would be intrigued.
    • That's how I feel. Beats could have been played for the past couple months wherein Dante and Gio interacted and had a difference of opinion -- or something. I don't know. I do know that this crushing rant that blames everything on Gio is absurd. -- Reading over all the comments here about characters and couples, it's kind of amazing that we have any show left considering the number of times actors and writers and execs were given influence to make major character and story decisions. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
