Fred Silverman was president of NBC at that time. I don't believe he or Earl Greenburg were running daytime. Was it Lucy Johnson?

I show Earl Greenburg as VP of Daytime Programming 1981-1983 and an article announcing his death is

This is the only mention I have found so far of Greenburg, who I have never heard of before

Feb 81

Earl Greenburg, VP for compliances and practices, NBC West Coast, named NBC West Coast VP for daytime programs.

So that appointment doesn't cover the NY shows which at that time were Doctors,AW and Texas.

So there would have been either an East Coast VP or an overall daytime VP.

Perhaps NBC was operating differently in that era because details are murky. The time b/w Michael Brockman in 1980 and Brian Frons in 83 there isn't definitive info on the daytime VP.

I echo that, as researching recently his name was brand new to me. Also echo how murky their organization seems. Bolen, Line, Silverman, Frons, Susan D. Lee clear but others ... ???

Okay, found an article that credits Lucy at NBC DT 1978-81. Full article posted in NBC Daytime thread. Other dt execs in the period are referred to or quoted.

Also found Earl Greenburg & he was VP of DT at NBC & he was the gay exec who fired Wesley Eure for being an out gay man. That was in 1981.

According to his Obituary, he was the head of NBC Daytime

Quote

Greenburg, who was born in Philadelphia, started his career in law in the
1970s - first with the Pennsylvania attorney general's office, then in
corporate and antitrust law. He grew bored after nearly a decade, and in
1978, a recruiter brought him to NBC as vice president of compliance and
practices.

But he wanted to move into another part of the business. "After three years
on the job, I wanted to do something on the creative side," he said in a
2005 interview with The Desert Sun.

A jog with legendary NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff helped him crystallize
his goals. "He asked, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' " Greenburg
recalled.

Greenburg was named vice president-in-charge of daytime programming in 1981
and he worked fast, canceling all but one of the network's game shows.

By chance, he said, he kept Wheel of Fortune, which has since gone to
syndication and remains one of the most successful and popular game shows in
TV history.

Greenburg later lured Regis Philbin from local television to a network
program. The Regis Philbin Show won an Emmy in 1984.

I just saw the 7/25/88 numbers. Nice to finally see "Days" at # 1 for once. Hooray!  Still hasn't happened since I started watching the show in 1990, but I finally got to see the full chart for the week. They just beat YR by 1/10th of a point. Phew!

I am wondering about Guiding Light of the week 1/19 to 1/23. Because your data say, that tuesday was preempted, but as i remember right , in the middle of the episode they showed a special report. So that episode was not preempted completely. And the next day 1/21 wasnt the repeat of 1/20. So i think 1/20 was only on for about 15minutes

It becomes apparent that he & Lucy were overlapping. Who knew 1981 would be such an NBC puzzlement.

Lucy Johnson was the VP of NBC Daytime who revamped the schedule in January 1983.

She sounds like Brian Frons with her replacement shows -- in her case, canceling two soaps for two cheap game shows that failed. Also, a Mercedes Benz MSRP at $41,000? Can we return to sanity in this country? Wow.

Sigh. Quote from an article I posted in NBC Daytime earlier tonight: The latest plot twists in "As the Daytime Executives Turn": Johnson, who served as NBC's vice president of daytime and children's television from 1978-81, ...

Makes me want to 🤬

The report says the preemption was for the Presidential Inauguration. The Presidential Inaugration is considered a "planned preemption" like Christmas or sports events. It is well known ahead of time because it takes place every four years on January 20. It goes on all day and there are no soaps at all, so it's not like an unplanned special report that only breaks into part of the show. It's very safe to assume that a soap is always preempted on Inauguration Day.

Per Nielsen, the Inauguration aired on CBS from 1001AM to 509PM on Tuesday 1/20/81. Nothing else aired in daytime on CBS that day. They have the quarterly hour ratings for that special report coverage.
