Caught up. This show is beyond strange, dated, & awkwardly paced, but oddly enjoyable. I still like it. I can't get past the lighting/set design though. I really wish this had a more modern feel & look to it. The mansion just kills me.

If Perr is indeed directing all of the episode, he is as poor ashis repuation for direction says. There's this really weird and disconcerting stylistic thing he does in th show with having characters close up fill the tv frame and talk directly into the camera, while looking just out of the frame--yes the close up into the camera is a soap cliche, but something about how it's used in this show feels odd to me. That is all tongue.png

Lol. Completely agreed.

He seems like a total control freak. Part of me commends him for directing/writing/exec producing all of the episodes, but I wish he'd hand the reigns over to different people for a change on this one. I'm shocked since he's voiced how adamant he is about bringing in new blood to work on the sets @ his production studio. You think he'd do the same on the pre-production end of things.

(but Tyler know God!)

BTW some lighting guy who works with Perry, apparently, wrote this open letter to him about the lighting--I did notice that even on my slightly too bright tv, the black actorsrs often faded into the shadows. I love moody dark soap lighting, but I agree this could be done better.

Dear Mr. Perry,

You may remember I have worked with you on "Why Did I Get Married", "Why Did I Get Married Too?", "For Colored Girls", "Good Deeds" and "House of Payne: Heartbeat".

For "Haves" may I suggest bringing up the lighting values? Overall, it is too dark. Many of the scenes had such bad shadows that we could not see the eyes of the talent. I was watching it at a friend's house on a Sony 50" LCD HDTV via AT&T Uverse so I know there were issues with the show's production values.

As you know, sometimes HD television is just too sharp. May I also suggest you take some of the edge off by using a bit of diffusion to give the show a touch of fantasy? (Just not as much as they use on NCIS! LOL)

Thank you.

2 reactions to this - I agree with him but isn't this kind of a dumb move to make? I don't think Tyler & his multi-million dollar prod company will be offering him any more employment! I would've kept my mouth shut. LOL.

his lips were chappy?

LOL!

Veronica annoys me.......

*Actress and character

I said it from the first ep I thought that Actress was stiff/wooden as hell. She hasn't improved in the slightest. The worst!

Amanda, you are the weakest link, goodbye!

It's not that the scenes are long -- it's that the scenes are long and nothing is happening except for repetitive dialogues and misplaced pauses that do nothing to advance story or character in any particular way. Let's not ignore that major point.

Exactly!

My God, this sudden change in Celine was so shocking and useless. What a way to create drama! It was as if there was a new character. He couldn't make one scene three minutes less so he could introduce the reasons for Celine's change earlier? Don't tell me he couldn't, episode 6 only had 10 scenes. Ten!

I was astonished by the sudden change in her character. Really disappointed too because I really loved her friendship w/Hannah. She's disgusting & a bother to me now and I hope she gets written off. Not interested in her past affair with Jim. They should've just kept her character simple!

(that's a direct quote. I mean c'mon maybe the episodes would be too short but you could cut half of that and have the exact same meaning. The poor actors must have to take sedatives on the set to maintain their pace.)

LOL.

About the extremely long scenes & pauses this show often has - I have to say as an editor, this show must be a total dream to edit. Seriously. I would be having so much fun with all the pauses, inserting in the best reaction shots & drawing out the mood.

I love this description! This show would be so much better if it wasn't in the hands of Tyler Perry. I loathe this man so much but yet I always tune in to see what kind of sh-t he is stirring up. Ugh I hate myself!

I feel the same way--I mean obviously it's ridiculous I continue to watch--but I can't stop.

Eric, I've been meaning to ask--WTF is your signature GIF.

This is why I take all the criticism with a pure grain of salt. LOL! Obviously, there's something redeeming to keep people coming back.

Why are you speaking as if you are Tyler Perry himself? You don't have to "take" the criticism, because it isn't directed towards you lol

People continue to fill midnight theatre showings of Plan 9 From Outer Space too :P

Right.

But anyway, I agree with Eric83 that this would be better if it was under the pen of someone other than TP or if there was someone there to balance out his tropes. The idea itself isn't even anything new or Earth-shattering, and it really doesn't have to be, but damn, it's gotta at least be interesting for more than five minutes at a time (and I know I'm being generous). All that dead air could be used to help flesh these characters out, and I don't know...maybe get them out of the house for a change.

True that!

Trust me, I meant nothing negative by my comment. I just think it's funny the show gets picked apart, but somehow people can't tune out.

Ha, well that's fair enough. Though I admit if it were daily I'd prob drop it after a while.

I can understand your point, and I apologize for being crispy. I can say personally, though, that I don't regularly watch. In fact, the two scenes I saw of Tuesday night's show were the first I've seen in a few weeks. I want to like the show, and I thought I would, and there are parts that I do like, but in the end, it's just not doing enough to keep me tuning in at all. I feel like I get what I need out of it by reading other people's comments on it.

It would have been wise to hire some soap person to at least co-HW or co-EP, I mean even the worst of the the ex-soap people could help with basic things like that--so far every setting looks basically the same...

Cool!

I'm not a major fan of TP. In fact, I truly hated a few of his movies, but for some reason, with all it's flaws, I like this show. I agree it needs a new writer just for simple continuity purposes.

On that note, I just can't with tjhat other show of his on OWN.
