HOLIDAY MIRACLE: Prospect Park Back On Track To Revive AMC and OLTL

  • Member

WTF!!!!!

EXCLUSIVE: Here is a great holiday gift for soap fans: I’ve learned that Prospect Park has revived its plan to continue cancelled ABC daytime dramas All My Children and One Life To Live online. I hear the company behind USA hit Royal Pains has inked deals with SAG-AFTRA and DGA for the soaps’ production, eyed to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

I actually think the Cris and Layla mess was a lot more simple than that. There's plenty of serious racism in daytime to go around, but there's also simple character favoritism. Cristian was written off years before that by OLTL as being strictly C-Team story. And his last big pairing and frontburner story on OLTL was with - yes - Evangeline.

By the time Cris got to Layla, he'd been with junior scrub Sarah as played by Justis Bolding in a far more inconsequential romance than his with Layla. He had become the disposable hunk and talk-to for other people. And Layla, who had so much to offer, was basically always there as a talk-to for other people - Adriana, Evangeline, etc. By the time they got their great story with Kish, their status was cemented on the canvas and in the minds of the production. I loved Cris and Layla together, I thought they should have gotten so much more. But I think their characters had become so insubstantial - only brought to full-blown life by Tika's performance and the sheer effort some of the dialogue people put in on the page day after day - that they, like a Sarah or Claudia Reston or Langston or whoever else, had been written off as support staff, period.

Sometimes it's a combination of casual everyday daytime racism and simple short-sightedness in terms of character potential and value. Cris and Layla had all of that going against them by the time OLTL turned their eye to them in 2009-2010. There's plenty of characters like that who we simply can't ever conceive of as being 'important.' It's an affliction that we face as much as TPTB.

The point I am trying to make is that

A) Not everything has to do with race

B) Acting is Acting!

While we are on the topic here is another point:

C) People who assume everything is Race-Based are racist themselves!

I am BEGGING you to stop speaking.

I'd rather they bring their kids back. Both are basically clean slates. Bobby would be especially interesting if they brought Sam Grey back.

I actually just saw Brian Gaskill commenting on the Pippin Broadway revival facebook page. I wonder if he'd be interested in returning as Bobby.

Bobby Seggert (sp?) would prob never return, but Sam Grey would be an interesting character.

Is Gaskill involved in Paulus' version of Pippin?

Can we PLEASE have separate threads for AMC and OLTL? They are two separate shows, and some of us don't give a damn about the other show.

This is what they do in television and film, although this is mainly an issue with dark skin WOMEN and not men. They'll agree to have token black roles on the shows, but only if they're mostly generic, light-skinned, skinny and know their place story wise. I don't think the casting director or anyone involved is racist. Race is a complex issue, but I do find it very telling how drastically they changed the character in recasting her. It would be like recasting Erica Kane with Melody Thomas Scott and Melody keeping the blonde hair. It just wouldn't make sense in any way.

I think the only way she was going to be viable is as a light skinned and skinny actor. We'll see, they might surprise us, but tv does this all the time, especially soaps. It's rate that you have a dark skinned actor who is allowed frontburner stories and is treated well. Look at how Y&R treats Tonya Lee Williams like she doesn't exit. She gave them 15 years of non-stop frontburner stories, yet she was the only vet brought back with no story at all (even when her husband, part of a supercouple, returned). And I'm sorry, but if Tika Sumpter was white or light skinned I can assure you she and Cristian's romance would've been a big frontburner story. The chemistry and there and viewers liked them, yet they were always in the background.

It's a sad reality in television. Somehow I doubt new Destiny will lack in the romance department the same way SE's Destiny did. SE's Destiny never got real kissing scenes (except the first kiss with Matthew, the rest were staged). She never had a love scene, although that's not something I would have wanted to see anyway. Overall she was not treated as an equal in romance department compared to Dani, Starr, and Langston. I'm not sure acting ability had anything to do with it. Shaun was treated the same way. On the other hand, new Destiny is bound to get a romance (Matthew or Mick), kissing scenes, and love scenes.

And while I'm at it, Errol, WHY is there a joint "in production" thread for AMC and OLTL??? Again, they're two separate shows, and I'm sure I'm not the only viewer who would prefer separate threads. I don't care what's going on with OLTL, who is being recast, who is written off, or the history of various characters and actors on that show. I'm sure there are others who feel the same way about AMC.

This thread is fine, the shows don't need separate threads until the shows are airing, IMO. But that's just me.

I think it is a bit premature to have separate threads as the shows have not aired yet.

No (at least not that I know of). He was just commenting on some of the photos they've put up and talking about when he played Pippin in a regional production.

I still think they need to stay joined until they're airing. There's plenty of information that is mixing together on the larger effort as well as casting questions.

I agree and the majority of us will frequent both threads which will result in tons of repeated information again.
