Members DRW50 Posted October 21, 2012 Members Share Posted October 21, 2012 Everyone knows about slapping, punching, rolling around, smashing of comedy vases, but sometimes a good argument can be far more effective. This was especially true in the days when soaps had good dialogue writers and knew how to have scenes that were longer than thirty seconds. A few of my favorites, in no particular order: - Another Life. The patron saint of Kingsley, Dr. Dave Philips, is disturbed by how his colleague and close friend, Ben, has turned his back on helping the poor in favor of a country club doctor type of job. Ben initially tries to be polite, but then snaps at Dave, telling him he has no right to judge anyone (Dave was a recovering alcoholic and years before, had killed his son in a drunk driving accident). Dave's face falls. Ben immediately apologizes. Dave says it's fine, but his voice is like ice. You know it's probably never going to be "fine" between them ever again. This is very possibly the most realistic argument scene I can remember on a soap, and cuts very deep. - Ryan's Hope. Jack Finelli is furious over his sister-in-law Siobhan's choice of a fiancee. In the parking lot at the rehearsal dinner, they argue, and argue, and argue. As this goes on, Jack's wife Mary starts to look at him and gets a sinking feeling in her stomach. When they return home, she's quiet, and slowly, she tells him that she remembers when he used to fight with her that way. Is he in love with her sister? Jack can't say she's wrong. Mary's heart breaks. By far the best scene Nicolette Goulet had as Mary. - Another World. Wyndham really taps into that hellbitch side of her and Watson is more than a match. Please register in order to view this content A one sided argument with disastrous consequences but NLG was stellar here. But the friggin camera doesn't stay on her face instead it pivots to Kelly Monaco's constipated facial expressions. Victoria Rowell was probably the best of any actress when she got a good argument scene. Flannery's best argument scene was this one with Kimberlin Brown. It's sort of a bridge between her more volatile work and the calmer stuff of the last Brooke years. I like how she plays out all the emotions, like barely restrained rage toward Dixie, like wanting to believe Adam, even when she knows she can't. Members DRW50 Posted October 21, 2012 Author Members Share Posted October 21, 2012 I'd never seen that Brooke/Stephanie fight. Very good acting. Good dialogue. I always sided with Brooke over Stephanie but I did like that at this point Stephanie still cared about Brooke's kids, instead of the later ALL LOGANS ARE WHORES garbage that made everyone one-dimensional.
