This thread was inspired by the Guns 'n' Roses thread, and the 25 year anniversary of their album release. When I read that I realized that this year is also full of anniversaries for the best pop group ever (tongue.png ), ABBA! wub.pngwub.png

It's 40 years since they released their first single as a group:

It's 35 years since they reached #1 on the Billboard charts for the first, and only, time:

It's 30 years since they released their last single:

and, it's 20 years since the release of their best-selling album ever, ABBA Gold.

Even though their first few albums may not reach the heights their later ones did they're still full of delightful pop songs.

From their first album "Ring Ring" (1973)

and a rarity, a song that one of the girls (Agnetha) co-wrote:

About 5 years ago, I discovered Agnetha's swedish language solo work, and I LOVE them. I think her vocals are better in her native tongue, she's obvioously more comfortable in her phrasing. That first album is very impressive, when you consider a 17 year old girl wrote these songs:

A fact that may not be that well known is that all four of the ABBA members were already quite successful artists before ABBA. Benny and Björn were members of two of the biggest bands in Sweden at this time, Benny in Hep Stars and Björn in Hootenanny Singers. Agnetha had a very successful solo career with several hit songs behind her. Anni-Frid was perhaps less successful than the other three, but she nevertheless had a thriving career.

This is the very first song that Benny and Björn wrote together back in 1965. It's called "Isn't it easy to say" and it was recorded by Hep Stars, with Benny on keyboard.

And this is the most recent hit from Benny and Björn. A song called "En dag i sänder" (One day at a time), recorded by Benny's new band, Benny Anderssons Orkester, with Helen Sjöholm as lead singer.

Great songs. Hasta Manana was done as a tribute to Connie Francis, who was Agnetha's favorite singer, or one of her favorites.

A few of my favorite ABBA songs that don't get any attention. Masterpieces, especially the last two.

Really didn't like the haircut Frida had in ABBA's last year.

As we all know ABBA will never re-unite, and even though Björn and Benny still write songs together most of what they write now is completely different from the ABBA sound. This song is probably the nearest thing to ABBA they've written in the last few decades. It was recorded in both a Swedish and an English version, both with Helen Sjöholm at the microphone.

It's almost impossible to pick a favourite ABBA song, since they're all wonderful. Even the less famous ones, like these two.....

(If someone forced me, this is probably the one I would pick as my all-time favourite)

    • -- Laura to Sonny: "I will always love and respect you." GAG ME. This stuff doesn't lead me to respect Sonny more, but to respecting Laura less. -- Carly being brought into the Gio/Brook Lynn story by Lulu. GAG ME. Why does Carly have to be a part of every damn story on this show?
    • This episode was probably the most we've ever seen of Jan.. and it took long enough. The phone conversation between Jan/Ashley also shed light on their backstory.. and I think it explains why Ashley seems to live in a dreamworld and why she's having difficulties with living with Derek.  Derek could be doing everything right and Ashley would still have a problem because she was an only child, didn't see her mother model positive male/female interactions, and sounds as if she was alone a lot of the time. Nicole is modeling healthy human behavior and she would be smart not to listen to Dani's advice... well intentioned as it is. Eva is the character you root for because she's suffering the consequences of her actions.  And if I were Eva, I wouldn't want to be part of the Dupree world.   I'm hoping the Doug/Joey scenes today is signaling that we're finally moving to the next stage of this story... Doug either asking Vanessa for the money, or letting Joey have dibs on Vanessa's business books, etc.   And Joey finally showing his true colors makes me think we might be approaching that next stage of this story.
    • Lord have mercy!!! Not SilkPress vs Eva at Oprhany Gene for everyone to see!!!! Though I loved Vernon shading SilkPress. I continue to love all this fallout.   Is THAT Joey's endgame?
    • WAIT!!?  You don't want to know CM's workout secrets?  And a recap of his insta feed?  What's wrong with you?   Anyhow, today's show had good character moments.  I feel like Sonny/Laura brought it down.  I really like Tracey and Jason scenes so I think I am a weirdo.  Carly/Lulu were actually pretty good as well, but Carly's dress was some sort of bondage/leather type situation?  It was a strange wardrobe choice lol.
    • Oh God When are we gonna see this on BTG?
    • Yeah, I don't really love Felicity being used to push the Chad/Cat agenda.  I don't get the question on Xander's behavior either.  He was wrong and offensive. I like Xander.  I think Paul Telfer is great.  If Marlena did the same thing I would say she's wrong too.  Characters are imperfect and that's fine.
    • Vanessa told Joey that her best friend had cheated and has a surprise daughter.  Joey said the same had happened to him.  I wasn't sure if Joey was saying he has an adult out-of-wedlock child?
    • Interesting. I definitely think that it's possible that Jan could be a former lover of Joey's from back in the day, maybe back when he was still married. I won't be surprised if it comes out at some point that Jan used to be an escort or something.
    • Quick question, How are you guys making time to watch all these soaps? I consider myself a pretty organized person, but since I have committed to watching more of the older soaps. I feel all over the place, and can not figure out a schedule that seems to work.  How are you all doing it?   Thanks. I will check that out.
    • Oh, poor Henry had to wait for the grave to finally come "out"! The whole things was McTavish plot dictated so that Hart could have money to pull off his scam of Roger later. The fortune is totally forgotten later. Which reminds me WHY did they fire Hilliard who actually could kinda pass for a midwestern farm boy..from JOISEY Grillo? AM and Lucy's wedding has got to be the weirdest wedding up to that point and really exemplified the McLaiby cheesy run. Universal Studios? And the Spauldings shut the place down for the wedding that only involves 6 people??? Its not even that weird that Bridget and David arent there...they didn't even invite AM's Mom or Grandfather...
