GH: Discussion for the Month of April

I guess it depends on the point of this story. We have been expected to do nothing - for months now - but point and laugh at a mentally ill woman. That's the entire story. This is after years of RC/FV coming up with any reason possible to have Bree Willamson playing the same character on OLTL. No matter what - even when she was almost raped by her own father - we were supposed to point and laugh at Jessica. Why is this a story? Nothing will change with Sonny, so it's just Ron writing bad parodies of soaps yet again.

It's like cheap cotton candy.

And I keep hearing about this great mentor relationship with John/Starr, and so on. John doesn't give a [!@#$%^&*] about anyone but himself. He never has. It's kind of hilarious how the show didn't bother for even a month to pretend that he ever gave a [!@#$%^&*] about Cole. Now he has this dead sister he can pretend to care about.

See, this is why I'm not fond of DID/split personality stories on daytime. Because they don't have the budgets of movies or even most prime-time shows, they have to resort to the one-alter-talking-to-the-other-in-the-mirror trick, which is cheesy and tired, IMO. Especially as one alter urges the other not to do something and the other says, "Tough! I'm doin' it and YOU CAN'T STOP ME!".

What does budget have to do with anything? How else would it be done? Ive seen DID stories be done like this on primetime as well. I have no issue with the mirror trick. The camp factor came in Connie trapping her in a mirror with Kate banging to get out. Just Kate looking at a mirror and interacting with her is fine enough

If you have a good enough actor then you can see them transition all on their own. You don't need gimmicks. Kelli, like Bad Acting Bree, just can't make it work.

I think they also assume viewers won't get it so they need some chuckles. The last years of Viki/Niki were terrible for that reason. If you watch the 1995 DID story, none of the alters talked to each other in mirrors or cages. At most they spoke to each other in Viki's mind. I think there was a mirror scene once.

This DID story has been going on for weeks now and this was the first time the mirror trick was used. Its been mainly in Kate's head till now and I think it was purely to have a visual representation of Connie "locking" her away.

IA that KS is a weak actress and the way she symbolizes Connie coming to the surface is the "epileptic seizures" (as R Sinclair calls them) and her stupid facial expressions. I said before that GH would be best to just tell her to stand still in place for like 2 seconds and have sound edit in a musical cue to denote to the audience that she has changed bc she's god awful at doing that on her own

You're right. I think all their stories tend to start off with just voices and then go to this. Beyond some visual need, I wonder if it's also someone on the show realizing how talentless some of these actors are. It's so similar to OLTL's last years - RC/FV zero in on bad actors and bad writing and directing make them even worse.

I think Kelly Sullivan gets a bad wrap. Not that I like her as Kate or think shes great but is she really any worse than the rest of the mediocrity on this show. And I do believe a lot of its directing and FV. It's too similar to how Bree acted on OLTL with her DiD stories.

And I like Robin Mattson but I always thought Kate Collins Natalie was played less cartoonish and more well rounded. Maybe it was the writing KC got vs RM but then I have a very low tolerance for extended runs of OTT crazy characters. Particularly when they start off cartoonish at the onset.

Really? Do you mean Janet instead? KC’s Natalie wasn’t cartoonish but her Janet most certainly was. She was the epitome of cartoon soap villain and a complete joke. RM played the role a lot more subtle, and cunning. KC was just so over the top with the theatrics and she was written more comedicly whereas RM’s Janet was portrayed more sadistic. RM got to play the more well rounded redeemed Janet. KC's Janet was almost cuckoo crazy her entire stint

I think its writing and directing. Rc plays all his story points as parodies. If you enjoy that type of writing it's no issue. DH is a show that's sort of thrived on that type of writing for years. Me I just think there's a line where parodies should not cross rape being one.But that's me.

    • That's what Julie Hanan Carruthers is doing for BTG at the new studio in Atlanta, but JHC is credited.
    • I remember when the whole Missy Reeves controversy started in 2012.  She tweeted support of a business that had made homophobic statements. Greg Rikaart (who was on Y&R back then) publicly called her out on it, but was willing to reach out and speak with her. Article here: https://greginhollywood.com/greg-rikaart-talks-about-his-twitter-war-with-fellow-soap-star-melissa-reeves-over-anti-gay-chick-fil-a-73139 That being said, ten years later, on DAYS, in 2022, when they had they double wedding of Leo/CraigWesley and Gwen/Xander, Jack and Jennifer came to the wedding.  At that time, Missy Reeves was only intermittently available for DAYS. Jennifer was living "in Boston" and Cady McClain and Missy were each intermittently appearing as Jennifer, on the specific occasions when the show required a Jennifer to appear. Missy wasn't on contract and she could have said no. But she chose to appear as Jennifer for the gay wedding of Greg Rikaart's character.   So... I mean... I would assume they reached a détente behind-the-scenes. Missy still has her belief system but there's that.
    • That was one of the best grandslam finals.  Alcaraz comes all the way back down 2 sets to 0, and three match points in the 3rd set, to win it in a 5th set tie-break.  And the quality of play was excellent - so many great shots.  What a battle!
    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
