Unpopular Opinions: 2012 Edition

I'll go first:

B&B

- While not perfect, the show is currently in the best shape it's been in since 2003.

Y&R

- Genie Francis is terrific as Genevieve Atkinson. I know she wasn't well liked in her first few months on her show, but I'm currently watching June 2011 episodes and I LOVE her campy take on the character, despite the overall wretchedness of the storyline. Although I never saw Francis on GH, so I don't have that to compare it to. I'd love to see her on B&B in a Sally Spectra/Jackie Marone type role.

- Phyllis is one of very few characters to actually flourish under MAB (save for the Lucy custody madness). And of course, I still consider La Stafford to be the best actress in daytime.

- Maura West was AT LEAST as miscast as Diane as Shari Shattuck was as Ashley.

Tina, Tawny, and Rebecca all felt like the same person and Andrea Evans is not good actress nor the ico nsome try to make her out as.

I loved her first run as Tina, but acting had nothing to do with it. The character was one of the best vixens I'd ever witnessed. With terrific writing, a mediocre talent can look really good. The subsequent returns proved AE to be overrated - the good writing left, so there was nothing to hide her shortcomings. Her stint on BB solidified this. But again, her first run (as Tina) was exceptional! Loved the way she used to strut around in her Gloria Vanderbilts and cause mischief.

Here is a Y&R one:

I really REALLY liked Adam, before he got trapped by Sharon's Venus Flytrap. Sharon is the place where viable leading men go to die, she ruins everything. And why on earth, are we supposed to believe men fall over themselves for this woman? She is basically the Soggy biscuit in human form.

I liked Adam before Sheffer came to Y&R, and Adam had to become a crybaby/psychopath Chris Engen fled the show to avoid playing.

Before "Shadam," Muhney's version of Adam did nothing beyond terrorize and molest pregnant women and have offcamera sex with brain dead twinks. If not for "Shadam," I am not sure he would have been kept on the show.

While I like the karmic justice of B&B hiring two actors who were dicked around by Y&R, I can't think of one good story Heather Tom has been in on B&B. I can think of one story which was one of the biggest pieces of trash I can remember on a soap. Beyond that she seems to be a nicely dressed recurring character.

I could see the appeal in Bill/Steffy before, but I really hope the show just dumps him now. His obsession with his son's love life and his behavior towards Steffy (essentially pimping her out) and Hope (repeatedly saying she is broken for life) disturbs me more than I can say. Ridge's unsettling behavior with women could almost be mollified because Ronn Moss is pure cheese. That isn't the case with Bill, who is more and more like a sexual predator from SVU or Criminal Minds.

She's had several. In particualr I really loved her time as Ceo of Forrester and the triangle with Steffy and Bill

The triangle seemed to basically be Steffy/Bill and this woman with a heart problem. Anyone could have played her part. I just don't see the point of this character.

Don't you mean her Venus Butterfly? ;)

The Maryanne Carruthers mystery was one of GL's only good stories in its final 10 years. Yes, i get fans hated it because it threw all logic and history out the window, but it was a perfectly paced mystery that played every beat and had a great climax.

Hope's return was the worst thing to happen to Bo on Days.

Amelia Hinle is not the problem with Victoria on Y&R and a recast wouldnt change anything.

I totally agree with you about Victoria. I will never, ever understand "Victoria needs to be a strong woman. Hire ______" There are no strong women on Y&R.

I think that Hope probably did drag down RKK's Bo, but I do wonder, if he had been let go and she wasn't around, if Bo just would have been written out, the way Kayla and Kim were.

Yup. This is the Victoria Y&R wants. Its a huge part of the reason HT left. It isnt going to change, and if it were to change i do think AH could pull it off.

I doubt Days would have written Bo off if Hope wasnt around. They brought Peter back when Bo was still with Billie and the character was hugely popular despite a recast.

I thought when Peter came back, Lisa Rinna was leaving (not because of that, obviously), and they were going back with Bo and Hope. I know Reckell did fine once KA left the first time, I just wonder if he would have survived in the Reilly era. I guess they could have had him with Krista Allen's Billie for a real relationship, instead of her just being a Hope obstacle.

I always kind of feel like Ameila Heinle gets a bad wrap; she's just in the wrong era of soaps. With strong writing and a strong producer she would be fine. It's sad to say the last years of Loving had a stronger writer(s) or producer(s) than Y&R of the last five years, but they did.

He did come back as Rinna was leaving, but i believe the deal was made before Rinna quit as she was one of the more vocal people against RKK. Im not sure though. I do think he would have survived, and I think Billie would have been insta Recasted instead of the break or Carly would have been brought back or they would have had him in something new as the character and actor had proved it could work away from Hope.

I agree about AH, totally.

Peter Reckall recast or not is probably one of the top 5 most underrated actors on daytime along with Melody Thomas Scott. He could have easily thrived without Hope. I don't dislike KA as some do and Bope are probably the most consistent and still believable couple on daytime. I'm usually more an advocate for actresses over actors but in this case I would have written off Hope and allow Bo to interact more across canvas. He's one of those I think could have transitioned into an anchor for that show and continue to be a lead vs the other half of Hope in their own bubble.

Amelia does get far too much flack. Like most pairings, she the woman carries it. The only reason Billy and Victoria half work( and I hate them) is because of her. She tries he just grins 24 by 7. As for Victoria, I wonder if folks remember why HT left the role. Apparently not.

Yes to all of this.

I even agree with you about bo/hope being a very realistic couple on daytime, as much as i hate them. I do totally believe tho, as you said, Reckell could be lead and carrying that show on his shoulders if his character was able to exist outside of hope. the few times he has been allowed he has thrived. The carly era this second time around is a prime example, the story was weak, but reckell shined and Bo was a leading man again only to be thrown back to hope and for it to be rewritten as basically big bad bo cheated and poor innocent hope was able to forgive him.
