Members ClassicSoapsFan Posted October 13, 2011 Members Share Posted October 13, 2011 I am not sure if it was a topic recently but soap operas seem to want to sweep characters under the rug and pretend that we don't know they are gone. Best example: Brooke English on All My Children. She had so many years and connections in PV but I think her last scene was at Simone's funeral (correct me if i am wrong) and then poof. At least until she came back to take Adam out of town. Another example is Taylor Thompson on All My Children. I never liked the character (especially after Beth Elhers dissed JR Martinez.) Her exit was mentioned in another topic. She is escorted out of a party never to be seen again. What are your favorite or most memorable examples? Along with Brooke and Taylor were Jonathan, Ava, Del, Anita, Sean and Im sure there's more. We were lucky if some characters mentioned what happened to them in passing after the fact, but none actually had a final scene where we learned they were leaving. Becca and Tina both vanished, and I'm sure someone else did too. In later years, Livia and Derek Frye both vanished, didn't they? I guess there's a difference between a recurring character no longer appearing (like Aunt Grace) and someone who was in fairly heavy story. Lexie's 2nd exit under Hogan (Renee's final day was Shawn & Belle's wedding and she didn't even get a line then she was gone again.), Just recently with Stephanie (The show never even mentioned her leaving she just vanished. Probably my bias of Jeff Branson (who hugged me at a Fun in the Sun event after I told him I like Jonathan better than Ryan) but I think he deserved a better exit. I know he was mentioned that he was working somewhere outside of Pine Valley. I am sure Passions had some examples. Wasn't Eve's sister a causality of the non-exit. I think a LOT could have been done with him and he was very needed. Where was his rage at Janet over Trevor? Why wouldn't he be there for Amanda? It's like he didn't exist. Amanda basically existed as a slampiece for most of her CS' Pine Valley run, and Janet was just there for kooky comic relief. Tim didn't fit in. GH in recent years has had the odd habit of actually trying to establish a character and then having them vanish. Winifred was supposed to work at a PI agency with Spinelli and Sam. Could be because I didn't watch GH that much at the time but I remember them making a big deal about Jolene's sister in a preview for a sweeps in Digest. Was she a non-exit? I believe her name was Nadine. I am not sure if it was this board or not but I seem to remember somebody mentioning Levin Ramblin having something to do with Branson's exit. Probably a troll. LOL! They included: David Grant (once one of the show's most vital characters) Vicky Spaulding (a character with a fascinating backstory and ties to core characters, never used) Ruth (a waitress who was in a non-triangle with them about once a month and who once took Reva hostage) Ruth's son Bill Lewis (the son of two beloved characters, unfortunately recast with the most boring soap actor ever, Ryan Brown) Pilar Santos (the kid sister of the show's leading man, Danny, who had little to say or do after her stories petered out involving her control freak mob mama) They just disappeared, and, with the exception of Bill, were never seen or mentioned again. I had forgotten about that with Bill and Pilar. Claire Ramsey sorta had a non-exit the following year. David at least got a few mentions when they brought back Charles Grant for a couple random appearances. Although its forgotten about now, but when Arianne Zucker left Days in 2006 Nicole was given an off-screen exit shortly after the one night stand with Roman(!) The most inexcusable was what ATWT did to Ellen Stewart, after 35 years!!!!! After Valente was canned, FMB brought Ellen back for a few appearances, but it was still so awful. I guess I should be happy she wasn't murdered like poor Bridget on AW. Speaking of AW, poor Linda Metcalf, sister to the first black heroine on a soap (Peggy Harris), vanished even after being on AW for a decade. I'm not sure if Brian Bancroft had an exit either. Members applcin Posted October 13, 2011 Members Share Posted October 13, 2011 On GH, Paul, Jenny & Sly disappeared under the presumption they were still living in PC, just not being shown anymore, although Sly did pop up a few more times with Lucky and Jenny came back briefly to give birth and be fodder for Ned/Lois. On OLTL, I don't remember the fate of David Renaldi being mentioned after Michael Zaslow died but maybe it was addressed much later?? Also, was Larry Wolek's absence ever explained? I don't remember any mention of Larry. Most of Angel Square also left when JFP arrived and began whiting up Llanview. Eddie and Linda were never mentioned or shown again. Neither was Carlotta's foster son, Eli. John Silva vanished from Y&R. For a long time I was convinced Leanna Love had vanished from Y&R without a trace, and I was very annoyed.
