Chugging along...April 1973!

Monday, April 2, 1973: Meg reveals to Lee (and the audience) that she still is neurotically jealous of Lee while she discusses Lesley.  When Burt doesn’t show up at the D.A.’s office, Det. Martin and the D.A. call Howie and Mamie Marshall; finding no clues, the D.A. orders Martin to go and bring Burt in.

Tuesday, April 3: Martin questions Howie and finds that Burt and money are missing.  Audrey receives a letter from Duncan saying he has taken a position in St. Louis because he knows their relationship was going nowhere.  Howie reveals to Martin that he saw Burt at Brooke’s apartment the night of the murder.

Wednesday, April 4: After a light baiting by Phil about women doctors, Steve tells Lesley a little about Phil’s background; Jane is inconsolable when she learns that Howie took Brooke out to dinner and bought her some jewelry.

Thursday, April 5: Teddy and Carol call Jessie to say they will be home Monday.  Lee suggests to Audrey that she be tough with Mrs. Andrews and threaten her with kidnapping charges should anything happen to Tom; Audrey goes on Bill Montgomery’s talk show; Mrs. Andrews watches and reacts to the threat.

Friday, April 6: Jane cannot resume life with Howie on the old terms.  Steve apologizes to Audrey for his advice against her going on television; Mrs. Andrews receives a visit from a neighbor who saw the program and believes the photos Audrey showed look like Tommy and Mrs. Andrews.

Monday, April 9: Peter and Lesley meet and she gets a glimmer at his problems with Diana.  Kent and Jessie prepare for the return of Carol and Teddy; Carol questions Teddy on his purposes; he reiterates his intention of marrying Jessie if she’ll have him, but reiterates his interest in her.

Tuesday, April 10: Howie pleads with his mother, but she is on Jane’s side, and can’t get over his deceptions.  Diana tells Peter she doesn’t want Phil to know she is pregnant.  Teddy and Carol come home; Carol is cold and remote.

Wednesday, April 11: Teddy cajoles Carol into sticking it out, to the point of kissing her.  Lee comes to the hospital and meets with Lesley about Meg’s problems.  In Chicago, Mrs. Andrews, having been recognized, packs up to move.

Thursday, April 12: Audrey shows Steve letters the station received after her television appearance; they are of no help; Steve introduces her to Dr. James Hobart.

Friday, April 13: Meg is suspicious of Lesley; Meg’s blood pressure rises after Lee surprises them by getting home.  Teddy placates Carol, gets rid of her in time to be alone with Jessie and gets her agreement to marry him.

Monday, April 16: Lesley reports on the findings of Meg’s blood pressure and what it reveals about her anxieties.  Audrey and Dr. Hobart get acquainted over dinner.

Tuesday, April 17: Steve is not pleased to learn Jessie agreed to marry Teddy; he tells Jessie he has discovered he has ulcers and may take a long rest.  Jane and Howie are emotional with each other, but Jane cannot yet be comfortable sharing a bed.  Kent is pleased to think that Jessie and Teddy may marry; Teddy reports on Carol’s reaction, and Jessie tells him she would not marry him at the expense of Carol’s happiness.

Wednesday, April 18: Lesley examines Meg and finds that her medication for high blood pressure is ineffective.  Peter tells Diana he told Lesley about the baby; Peter is puzzled when Diana begs him not to tell anyone who might tell Phil.

Thursday, April 19: Steve tells Audrey he is taking a leave of absence; they have a touching scene where they promise to always be friends.  Diana worries about how to conceal the baby’s birthdate from Peter; Phil comes to see Tracy and Diana is cold.  Jim quizzes Audrey about herself and learns she will always wait for her baby; Mrs. Andrews panics when Tommy faints.

Friday, April 20: Jane can’t quite forget Howie’s lie.  Teddy gets Jessie to countersign a bank note for $25,000; he learns that Carol and Kent will each inherit half a million dollars when they reach eighteen.

Monday, April 23: Steve leaves for Mexico.  Lesley tells Lee she thinks Meg needs another doctor.

Tuesday, April 24: Teddy tells Carol his wedding to Jessie is May 4; Carol explodes; Teddy talks Carol into running away with him.  Jim questions Audrey about her feelings for Tom; Dr. Carter tells Mrs. Andrews that Tommy has pulmonary stenosis and is going to need surgery; he promises to try and find Dr. Jim Hobart, who is the best surgeon in the country in this field.

Wednesday, April 25: Phil is outraged when Jessie tells him she is marrying Teddy.  Meg decides not to take her medication because she suspects Lesley of trying to dull her senses so she won’t suspect any relationship between Lesley and Lee.  In a parked car, Teddy and Carol plan their elopement and getaway for Friday.

Thursday, April 26: Lucille tells Audrey that Steve’s ulcers are probably Audrey’s fault and that she doesn’t approve of her relationship with Jim; Jim receives a call from Chicago asking him to consult on a case of a small boy with congenital heart problems; he agrees not knowing the child is Tommy.

Friday, April 27: Jessie calls Teddy to tell him she’ll be home late; he thanks her for countersigning the loan, tells he has the money and says goodbye; she suspects nothing.  Peter tells Lesley about Diana’s tensions; Lesley believes that women get terribly involved with children and remembers in a flashback herself at the time of her baby’s crib death.  Carol and Teddy are packed and tell Kent they are running away together; Kent is stunned; they leave him to explain to Jessie.

Monday, April 30: Jessie tells Jane she plans to buy her wedding dress on the way home.  Lee explains to Lesley that Meg wants to invite her to dinner and hopes she will accept in an effort to reassure Meg; Lesley accepts.  Jessie comes home with her wedding dress and learns from Kent that Carol and Teddy have eloped.

May 1973 is a doozy, not only onscreen, but behind the scenes.  A WGA screenwriters strike that began in March finally extends to soaps by mid-May.  And hearings on a little thing called Watergate disrupted the daytime schedule.  I pieced together the pre-emptions from info from the Another World Homepage synopsis (GH aired opposite AW), as well as newspaper TV listings, along with the VTR/Airdate schedule included in these papers.

Summaries of scab scripts are noted.  Enjoy!

Tuesday, May 1, 1973: At dinner, Meg is distressed about Scott’s admiration for Lesley and is disturbed when Lesley asks about the pills she is supposed to be taking.  Peter visits Jessie, who has called in sick; she tells him that Teddy and Carol have eloped; Peter suggests that Teddy’s discovery that Carol is an heiress might have influenced him.

Wednesday, May 2: When Phil hears about Teddy’s betrayal he is irate; he deplores Teddy for taking advantage of Jessie, but quickly realizes that he did the same.  Jim examines Tommy and tells Mrs. Andrews that heart surgery is essential; we see Jim take a drink when he is alone.

Thursday, May 3: Jessie tells Lee about the $25,000 note she co-signed, which she is now liable for.  Peter suggests to Lesley that she move in with Jessie.

Friday, May 4: Jane discovers that Howie has started a savings account for Joanne, and she takes him  back into her bed.  Jim tells Audrey why he hasn’t talked about himself; he discovered his wife had an affair with a lawyer friend and his wife eventually took her own life.  Mrs. Andrews, nervous, promises Tommy they will soon return to Chicago.

Monday, May 7: At home, Jessie hurries in from her garage and is threatened by a tough, menacing man who forces his way in.  Lee tells Lesley that Meg had a bad weekend, with tension and headaches; Lesley is puzzled why the medication isn’t working.  At gunpoint, Harry the thug, forces Jessie to call in sick and says she won’t get hurt if she does what she’s told.

Tuesday, May 8: Diana calls Peter to tell him that Tracy is sick.  Lucille and Sharon speculate that Jessie has called in sick again because she is mourning the loss of Teddy and is humiliated.  Lesley visits Meg and finds her blood pressure is still very elevated; Meg rejects the suggestion of a specialist.  Peter tries to reassure Diana about Tracy’s illness.  Harry tells Jessie he is fleeing the police and badly needs a fix.

Wednesday, May 9: Jim tells Audrey about the child on whom he will do heart surgery; the boy reminds Audrey of her own son.  Peter and Lucille discuss Jessie’s absence; Harry insists that Jessie call the hospital and tell one of the doctors to bring morphine.

Thursday, May 10: Phil overhears Jane talking to Diana about Tracy’s illness; angry, Phil decides to go see Tracy for himself; Phil insists that Diana call a pediatrician; she refuses until she speaks to Peter.  Harry forces Jessie to call Peter and ask him to bring morphine and syringes.  Lee drops by to see Lesley about Meg’s continuing headaches.

Friday, May 11: Peter gets the drugs and syringes; Diana calls for Peter in vain; Phil is furious that Diana won’t call a pediatrician until she talks to Peter.  Jim slowly expresses his interest in Audrey, after which he takes a drink.  Peter delivers the morphine to Jessie under Harry’s gun; Harry is about to give himself an injection.

Monday, May 14: Harry gives himself the shot and passes out; Peter has substituted an anesthesia; Peter calls the police who come to take Harry away.  Phil rages because Diana refuses to call a doctor until Peter comes home; Peter calls Diana, finds her hysterical, and promises to hurry home at once.

Tuesday, May 15: Lesley wonders if Meg may be jealous and wonders how Lee will explain Meg’s having found Lee in Lesley’s office; Meg and Lee have a tense conversation.  Phil threatens to take Tracy to the hospital over Diana’s objections; Peter examines Tracy and agrees he must be taken to the hospital; Peter and Diana order a furious Phil out of the apartment.

Wednesday, May 16: Lee urges Lesley now more than ever she should move in with Jessie.  Dr. Perkins tells Audrey he is doing tests on Tracy, who has a bad pneumonia.  Jessie gets a letter from Steve wishing her happiness with Teddy and apologizing for his doubt; Jessie is delighted when Lesley and Lee propose she move in; Meg calls Jessie and discovers that Lesely and Lee were there together.  Dr. Perkins reports on Tracy to Peter and Diana; Phil is wildly convinced that Tracy should have been brought in earlier; Diana hysterically gets Peter to take Phil away.

Thursday, May 17: Pre-empted Watergate Hearings.

Friday, May 18: Pre-empted Watergate Hearings.

Monday, May 21 (scab script): Tracy’s condition is serious; Diana and Peter keep vigil in the waiting room; Diana defends Peter to Phil; Jim gets tough with Audrey, telling her to stop pitying herself; she walks out on him.

Tuesday, May 22: Pre-empted Watergate Hearings.

Wednesday, May 23: Pre-empted Watergate Hearings.

Thursday, May 24: Pre-empted Watergate Hearings.

NOTE: The WGA Screenwriters strike that began in March finally extends to soap opera writers.  The following summaries are of episodes penned by scab writers.

Friday, May 25 (scab script): Lesley moves in with Jessie; Peter and Diana still keep a vigil in pediatrics; Phil demands a consultation be ordered because Tracy is worse; Audrey comes in and tells them the doctor wants to speak to them.

Monday, May 28 (scab script): Audrey tells Lucille that Tracy has died; Diana tells Peter that maybe Tracy would have been all right if she had called a doctor sooner; she is shocked by Tracy’s death.  Lesley tells Lee she should resign from Meg’s case; Lee says Meg will suspect a relationship if she quits.  Diana wants a short, simple service for Tracy; she doesn’t want to see Phil.

Tuesday, May 29 (scab script): Steve returns to the news of Tracy’s death; he is still unaware of Teddy’s running away with Carol.  Steve visits the Taylor apartment and then Jessie’s house; Jessie tells Steve about Teddy, the drug addict episode, and that Lesley is moving in.

Wednesday, May 30 (scab script): Howie learns that Burt Marshall died in a car accident running from the police.  Lesley asks Steve to put someone else on Meg’s case; Meg, Lee and Scott have lunch; Scott wants Lesley to administer a tetanus shot; Meg reveals her insecurities.  DIana and Peter return from the funeral; Peter says he feels sorry for Phil, sending Diana into a spiral; Peter says she is hurting herself and asks if she wants to lose this baby, too; she says yes, then no, then begs for God’s forgiveness.

Thursday, May 31 (scab script): Steve tells Jessie that she looks pale.  Meg has a serious headache, but doesn’t want Lesely called; Meg is convinced she is losing her family to Lesley.  Audrey tells Steve she is going to Mercy Hospital to visit Jim’s patient; Jim and Audrey talk about the child; Jim is moving to General and will have his own department; in Tommy’s room, Mrs. Andrews prays he will be alright.

Cameron Faulkner funded a free clinic for Lesley in December of 1974.  It's named after her grandmother, Mary Sullivan.   Lesley wanted to name the clinic after her grandmother because she was raised by her grandmother from a very young age.  Her grandmother was a nurse, and they lived in a rural area.  Many of their neighbors didn't have much money so they would come to Lesley's grandmother when they were ill, looking for home remedies and such.  This is what led to Lesley's interest in medicine, and especially in providing health care to the poor.  After her grandmother died, Lesley was adopted by well-off gentleman , Walter, (I've also read that she was adopted by a couple) who helped her fulfill her dream of graduating from medical school.

Walter is the one who paid off the nurse to tell Lesley that Laura died at birth.

I do not know if Mary Sullivan was Lesley Williams maternal or paternal grandmother. But that is where the assumption that Sullivan is her maiden name came from.  The character summary is the first I've seen her maiden name officially listed as Peters. Again thank you for the information.

I do not know what happened to Lesley's Free Clinic?  I believe that it was not located within General Hospital. But I'm not sure as it pre-dates my watching GH. Does anyone know where Lesley's clinic was and what happened to it?

I find it interesting that Lesley was operating a Free Clinic in 1975; five years before Rick Webber would go on to open his Waterfront Free Clinic in 1980.  As far as I remember, there was never a mention that Lesley used to also have a free clinic when her ex-husband opened his.

I appreciate the "Peters" insight from DOOL.

    • Backtracking because BTG has been distracting me from keeping up with GH. Why is Carly always involved with a paternity lie? Lulu is Dante's (wife? if Im correct) so she has the right to tell him about his son. If anything, she's in a better place to reveal paternity drama than Robin was. As for Robin...I'm conflicted about whether it was HER place to tell AJ he was Michael's dad. Being with a man who's pretending to be someone else's baby daddy is wild. Dante was snoring blaming everyone  but Rocco, however he was right about Jason. A convo isn't enough, neither is trying to be your son's friend. Adolescents need a disciplinarian. At least Lulu made Rocco and Danny scrub the house.

    • I saw a new BTG promo during Watson tonight (Sunday May 11).   I don't remember what I saw (and I wouldn't say here on the nonspoiler thread anyhow). I know only that it was different from the "next on BTG" preview at the end of Friday's episode. If anyone catches the new promo, please post it on the spoiler thread.
    • I hope GH gives Lesley an on screen memorial I'd love to have Scott, Robert, Holly, Rose Kelly, Mike Webber, Blackie Parish  & Claudia Phillips return for the episodes
    • As requested by @BoldRestless the 1976 story summary of Y&R from the Daytime serial newsletter. I will post it in parts as it is quite detailed.  Pt 1 Set in Midwestern Genoa City, The Young and the  Restless, which premiered four years ago, is the story of the Brooks and Foster families. Jennifer and Stuart Brooks are, on the surface, the perfect couple, blessed with four beautiful daughters, but under the veneer of a first impression lie cracks in the facade. Jennifer had become dissatisfied with her marriage after the birth of her oldest daughter, Leslie, and had left Stuart with the idea of returning to her former fiancé, Dr. Bruce Henderson. After later reconciling with Stuart, Jennifer found she was pregnant with Laurie, and she has lived all these years with the suspicion that Laurie may be Bruce’s daughter. Leslie  has recovered from a nervous breakdown and is now a famous concert pianist, happily married to former Surgeon now newspaperman Brad Elliot.  . Chris Brooks is married to Dr. William (Snapper) Foster, and Peggy, the youngest Brooks daughter, is a college student. Jennifer recently left Stuart a second time, considering again a life with Bruce, but the discovery of a lump in her breast followed by a mastectomy for cancer has again changed her priorities.   Laurie, meanwhile, has been dating Dr. Mark Henderson, Bruce’s son.  Snapper’s mother, Liz Foster, had finally accepted the fact that her husband, Bill, had abandoned their family and had had him declared dead when he suddenly walked back into their lives, suffering from emphysema. Jill, Liz and Bill’s only daughter, was married to Phillip Chancellor, the father of her unborn child, just hours before his death. Phillip obtained a quick Caribbean divorce upon learning of his impending fatherhood and was badly injured when his now-ex-wife, Kay, meeting him at the airport upon his return, lost control of the car when he told her of his plans to marry Jill. After Phillip’s death Kay vowed to void his marriage to Jill and deprive Jill of |his estate. Kay’s son from her first marriage, Brock Reynolds, supports Jill in her claim, but Kay, a former alcoholic, cannot accept the idea of having lost Phillip to her former paid companion. Greg Foster, Jill and Snapper’s brother, is an attorney working for Legal Aid, where Chris is his assistant. Upon learning that her daughter Lauralee has become engaged to Dr. Bruce Henderson’s son Mark,Jennifer Brooks tells Mark she suspects he and.Laurie are half brother and sister. She explains she spent a week with Bruce after a bad fight with her husband, Stuart, when she believed their marriage was over. A blood test confirms her fears—Stuart cannot be Laurie’s father. Keeping what he’s learned to himself,Mark painfully breaks his engagement to Laurie and leaves town. Laurie is shattered by this, unable to understand what went wrong. But soon she begins to put bits and pieces together and confronts hermother, asking what she said to Mark that drove him away. Jennifer finally tells her daughter the truth and stands helplessly as Laurie turns to run to her father for comfort and suddenly realizes he’s not her father—even this her mother has taken from her. Laurie follows Mark to Cleveland and tries to persuade him that they can still be married—they need not have children—only to be hurt again when Mark sadly tells her their love would become dirty and they would wind up hating themselves and each other. Heart broken, Laurie agrees to let him go. Jennifer has recently left Stuart, due to growing frustration in her marriage, and had planned to marry Bruce, but discovery of breast cancer and a subsequent mastectomy caused her to reconsider her plans. When Stuart earnestly pleaded with her to come home to him and their daughters after her recovery, she agreed, but now her guilt over Laurie’s situation has caused her to waver. When Laurie confides the truth to her older sister Leslie, Les makes it clear to her mother that she finds the idea that Jennifer would think of returning to her father contemptible. But Brad Elliot,Leslie’s husband, warns her to hide her feelings or her father will notice and ask for an explanation.Jennifer gives in to Stuart’s wishes, and he welcomes her home as his wife again. Leslie has had two more piano-concert triumphs and basks in the attention of the music world, as well as that of Lance Prentiss, a wealthy industrialist who has been following her career with avid interest. Les invites Lance home to Genoa City, hoping the dynamic, handsome young titan of business can help distract Laurie from her heartbreak. With the birth of Jill Foster’s baby imminent, Kay Chancellor offers Jill one million dollars for the child —fathered by her late husband, Phillip Chancellor. After Phillip’s death Kay had the divorce ruled invalid and voided Jill’s marriage, making her unborn child illegitimate. But now, finally acknowledging Jill’s baby as Phillip’s, Kay tells Jill she can give the child the Chancellor name and social position, as well as the love she had for Phillip. Jill, torn by love for Phillip and his baby and the extreme financial need of her family (Jill’s father is dying of emphysema and needs a warm, dry climate), realizes that Kay can give her child everything he could need, things Jill could never provide, and agrees to Kay’s terms.  Jill’s son, Phillip Chancellor Foster, is born prematurely a few days later. Liz Foster, Jill’s mother, is horrified that Jill would “sell” her son to Kay, and Jill’s father, Bill, is horrified that it is concern for his health that led Jill to this arrangement. He would rather die than give up his grandson. But when Jill, who has avoided seeing her child, has to take physical custody of him in order to deliver him to Kay, she is suddenly unable to give him up.

haha you did good explaining all that. So basically Monday's episode is gonna be what was suppose to be Friday's episode. Even though CBS and PPlus uploaded Monday's Aka Friday's show before they deleted it? LOL
    • I do mean those two, but when I download them, the Chris from Greece version is from RTL with subtitles and starts with a doctor greeting Stephanie and the rsclassicfanfanforever version is from Videoland, no subtitles and starts with Tawny and Becky? Sorry if this was already discussed. Is the Chris version merged with another episode? That one is longer.
