Uh, I hate the Brenda breakdown story!  I think the quieter moments were okay and there is a decent scene at Lily's grave that I think she submitted for the emmy, but the OTT actual breakdown ruined it all for me.   I don't think her getting over the breakdown was handled well either.  How did she get better?  Jax's support?  Having a one sided conversation with Lily's gravestone?  HATED IT.

VM was better in the Stone AIDS/Sonny wire break up stuff and her 2002 return stuff.  There wasn't a chance in hell she would win that emmy in 1998 on the strength of material.  I think every actor she was against had better work that year.   There was a possibility she could have won on popularity alone, but I never thought she was a favorite.

@BetterForgotten Julia Barr was the winner.  The nominees were Julia, Amy Carlson, Amy Ecklund, Vanessa, and Victoria Rowell that year.

At least she got her Popularity Emmy in 2002 so I am sure Vanessa is fine with that.

Yeah, I am pretty sure that's the general consensus.  Robin was very good that year with the Jax divorce and falling off the wagon.  I never was a big RC/Skye fan, but that's why I said VM won for being VM.  I am not sure her material in 2002-2003 stood up to the other nominees, but more of an overall thanks for her popularity.  This was probably Vanessa's best work.  It's a shame RC never got another chance for an Emmy because she really was a good actress.

To me, RC is very cold as an actress.  Very old Hollywood.  I never really connected with her as Skye.  And while I liked Jax/Skye and thought they had good chemistry, the whole romance felt super rushed so they could be married before Brenda came back.   On the other hand, the Brenda/Jax/Skye stuff really gave RC some of her best material on GH and some of her best scenes are with VM.  The scene where Brenda hands a drunk Skye a drink is one my favorites.  It was a brutal and bitchy take by Vanessa, but Robin was excellent.

I always felt it was rushed too. But everything to establish Skye on GH was heavily rushed, by JFP and Megan, and Robin is so arch and old Hollywood, as you said, that it always annoyed me, especially as an OLTL fan who'd seen them supercharge what they did to that show at GH. I've always liked RC regardless, but I never accepted Skye as a Quartermaine calling Edward "Grandfather" within weeks of her arrival, supposedly having instant connections and rivalries with people like Sonny and Ned within days or weeks, and I never will. I was very glad when she was de-Qed by Guza who clearly held all of that in contempt. Ingo and Robin did have chemistry, but I watched their romance in real time and I never bought its evolution.

The Skye character only worked on the show, IMO, during her short-term stints in later years after RC went off-contract. She would come in, mix it up and leave. That I'm fine with and it suits her; there's a proud tradition of that with characters like Tracy, Marco Dane, etc. She should still be doing that tbh. But on contract as an 'honorary Quartermaine' or with Luke - please God, no.

I never liked the shoe-horning in of Skye, as much as I love Robin Christopher and Skye. I didn't mind her on the show but yeah it was all so rushed and forced.

I did like the idea of Alan having a daughter but it was all wasted on Skye, and then un-done.

I didn't love her as an insta-Q and it did feel like she was immediately part of the family knowing none of the history.   I did like her relationship with AJ.  I was actually annoyed they de-Qed her, not because I had investment in that, but because they did it to pair her with NED.   Skye was just an odd fit for OLTL and GH and Guza never knew what to do with her.  Skye was everywhere and in the strangest pairings.

Anyhow, the potential of Jax/Skye was there but it moved so fast and everyone knew it stood no chance against a Brenda return.  I may have broke Jax/Skye up before Brenda and given Jax/Brenda other obstacles (non-third party) and saved Skye for post-Brenda Jax.

I'd be fine with Skye popping in now and then and bringing Lila Rae on canvas now as well.

It was so good!  Must see tv at the time.  It's not a surprise the ratings reflected that. Almost every story was decent too except for the Lucky/Luke/Summer stuff.  It did begin to drag during the Luis trial, but I do think Guza was going to ramp things back up with Brenda/Sonny/Jason after that if VM didn't leave.

    • She, the star of the show that she is, was fantastic in the episode, and the scene does include her, but it's more on the embarrassing side of things, much more. It's certainly a fresh idea, I can say that.
    • I know French Fan had released monthly summaries for all the soaps from 1975/1976/1978 that helped to put focus on who wrote what.   It's somewhere in the message boards (not sure if in archives or not). From what I recall, Labine did start the Ben/Betsy/Arlene triangle, the Jamie/Diana story, the Felicia story, and Rick/Cal/Meg stories.    When Depriest came on, she kept the ball rolling with all of those tales by having Arlene's mom starting to work for Meg as there was blackmail from Arlene to Ben, Felicia's story became more psychological where she was being stalked.. but you couldn't tell if she was truly being stalked or if it was in her head, and I think Arlene also had an admirer that ended up dying in a struggle.  The months she was writing sounded interesting and full of tension. Once the Schneiders came on... it seemed as though what had been started by Labine and built on by Depriest was reversed by this team.  I wonder if Upton had to sort of rebuild because of what the Schneiders had done during their time working on the show.
    • I really didn't start watching the show until season 12 when I was a teen, so I only caught the last three years. I LOVED the show over all though...even that part of 13 that was a bit messy! So, it's been a treat streaming the previous seasons on Plex. I'm amazed at how well so much of the writing holds up over 30 years later. Far better than a lot that we get today! For the most part, stories move along at nice pace with good twists and turns! I just finished season 11, so I'm finally picking up where I started watching all those years before. When I started watching as a teen, Laura had already died, so while she was mentioned pretty often, I didn't have much background with the character. CM was an amazing actress and had chemistry with everyone. So, it's a bit of a headscratcher that they didn't seem to have any idea of what to do with her starting at around season 7. Her scenes at that point are mostly short, brief, and she has very little true story right until the episodes where she's dying in 9. I wonder what it was about the character that the writers couldn't figure out what to do with her. Also, Ben's exit storyline was a bit confusing for me. I never really got who this woman was who was stalking him and this "secret organization." The whole plot seems like it should be on a different show. Michelle Phillips and Nicolette Sheridan have really fun mom/daughter/frenemies chemistry. I remember having a huge crush on PP's Michael and being disappointed when he was written out at the end of season 12.

People with the disorder can: Have an unreasonably high sense of self-importance and require constant, excessive admiration. Feel that they deserve privileges and special treatment. Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements. Make achievements and talents seem bigger than they are. Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate. Behave in an arrogant way, brag a lot and come across as conceited. Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office. At the same time, people with narcissistic personality disorder have trouble handling anything they view as criticism. They can: Become impatient or angry when they don't receive special recognition or treatment. Have major problems interacting with others and easily feel slighted. React with rage or contempt and try to belittle other people to make themselves appear superior. Have difficulty managing their emotions and behavior. Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, humiliation and fear of being exposed as a failure. --- Or maybe Leslie simply has Soap Villain Syndrome.
    • Ambryn Michelle and Trisha Mann-Grant are easily the most charismatic actresses to grace daytime in a longggggggg time. This show wouldn’t be as good without them, IMO.
    • whatever she has is far worse. Narcissism is just a symptom for deeper issues.

    • What is it? I already know Ambyr was electrifying.
    • The show isn't great right now, but I do hope it can stay on, unlikely as that may be. I guess at least it's better than this time last year. I will say it doesn't really feel like Shortland Street anymore.
    • You guys are going to die when you watch the first scene of today's episode.
