I'm reading at SOC (from SOD) that Jacob Young didn't like the ending they wrote for JR although he sees where it is fitting to JR's character but he does appreciate that it was a memorable ending. He also felt like with Babe the other characters shouldn't have been brought back from the dead to help keep some sense of reality. I agree.

ETA:

Babe died, his antics weren't literally god-like, Jake and Amanda made him think his child was dead. I felt for David, I got that his actions were more from pain than from plain neener-neener arrogance. There was an overall balance for at least half of Pratt's reign with him. Pratt did damage to David like everybody else so my comparison wasn't meant too literally. Arrogance for the sake of arrogance is what really felt about the definition of David under Broderick though.

I agree on DS & DK, not necessarily bad but just rather dull. I think LB showed that she could very write well in brief moments but overall did little to strenghten characterizations across the board mostly because her focus was on a plot driven story that took up most of the show. And, yes, she did have a small window of time with way too much that needed to be fixed. Not that she couldn't have done a lot more good with her time.

I concede network interference probably was a big hinderance to any writer especially as the cancellation sounds grew louder over the years.

That's interesting re JY--overall I probably agree with him (though I felt him going off the hinges so far did make some kind of sense). But, while I did find Stuart's return touching, I agree that the ghost comebacks actually were much more effective anyway (well not so much for the botched Gillian one--and if the rumour that she was meant to come back for real but they nixed that with the Internet deal makes me a bit less interested to hear the original finale).

I actually forgot Babe's death was fairly early on in Pratt's era (and as I've admitted before, I liked a lot of stuff in his first 4-6 months even), and you're right about the motivation. Again, I felt they went into more details with David the past few months--why he has a God complex, even somewhat trying to justify his stupid Orpheus Project due to the damage he had suffered from his father's death, Leora's, etc, and not being able to do anything about it). But otherwise I actually fully agree with you.

Gillian's return being 7-10 seconds long was kind of wrong as you literally could blink and miss it, but the scene itself was really, really good IMO. Very effective (although it could have been stretched out a minute).

It definitely was--but she deserved at least more than one line. While it probably would make David an even more over the top villain, it would probably have been more effective if he had just had this complete desire to toy with the people who "turned on him" in Pine Valley by grinding them down until all their relationships fell apart with memories and the possibility (that wasn't actually there) that these people could still be around... Or maybe not, it's a pretty hard story to salvage.

Nice to see other Edith Wharton fans here--she's one of my top 5 authors (even if I do often feel that her work is a less verbose continuation--from the ghost stories to the complex psychological soap opera novels--of her mentor and friend, Henry James ;) ). (Random, but I always wonder why, instead of trying to copy primetime or the current movies, soaps don't just rip off more of those classic novel stories, if they must bederivative of something. Of course they have a bit--the initial Wildwind Saga was a mix of several classics, from Rebecca to Jane Eyre, but...)

DF, completely agree about Marian. It was nice to see her get to do some acting, after being forgotten for so long, and do a great job--but then to just have her sequester away inthe insane asylum, deemingly forgotten by her loved ones, with no will to try to snap out of it or anything, made zero sense--but that's Pratt for you. In the AMC Tribute Magazine, Agnes, in her typical polite way (how I wish she had a full on tell all memoir just waiting to be published...), basically says that she stronglly objected to Stuart being killed off and that whole storyline, but during that era she was persona no grata at story meetings, essentially shut out or ignored--ironically she even says that when she did attend those foolishly precious focus groups, the execs weren't listening to what the fans at them said. Probably one reason why she did seem to be down with the whole Orpheus story, even if it seems bizarre even compared to even some of her other bizarre stories.

No personality .....eh ...disagree....if you witnessed Greenlee from her inception you know that's not true. Some may have not liked her feisty spunky personality but she certainly had one.

I saw Greenlee from her inception and I thought she was cold, bitter, and asexual from the start, devoid of a purpose, grafted onto various characters who had to listen to her latest whines and tirades, only warmed up when a handful of her leading men managed to make her look like more than a dead fish washed up on shore.

As for Kendall, I just won't say anything about the character from now on.

LOL I loved Greenlee, pretty much all the way into her first few weeks with Ryan. I still see a lot of potential for the character without Ryan--but I do know this is one of the rare things Carl and I will forever completely disagree on ;).

Yey that was my same problem with RB, cold and hard (damn I just finished saying this about SJB in another theread) Is it bad that I wanted Vanessa to kill her

I loved Greenlee (mostly) up until Sabine Singh left. As soon as Budig came back, I was done.

Not even a bit of that came back during her marriage to David? (Which I really think should have lasted longer...)

I don't see cold and hard as a problem I guess--and I did buy her few vulnerable moments. Agnes Nixon obviously created her as a flip on the Erica Kane character--a poor little rich girl this time.

Maybe a little...By that time, I was very burnt out on the entire character though. And I was always a HUGE fan of RB in the past, but I found that by the time she returned in '10, she was so utterly bored with the character, that I couldn't invest at all.

Now, I wouldn't mind seeing her as Carly on GH.

I felt she came to (some) life again with the David stuff, personally, but your point does make sense, I'll concede.

You're right. Out of all her storylines post-SabineGreenlee, the David stuff was her best work.

Any "good" Greenlee story involves a better leading man propping her up. I can't remember a time she did anything to support any other character or make them shine.

I just kind of resent actors like Budig and Reigel who I liked as Bianca who came to use AMC as their own personal cash station. I was happy when both roles were recast.
