While the idea of making one's first name the title of a talk show was originally "cute," it has been so overdone by now that such a title is now suggestive of a dull and boring show.

One of the reasons why I remain pessimistic about AMC's and OLTL's chances on PP is because (I think) both soaps will have such a hard time overcoming their reputation of being failures (in recent years). Yet, there is a complete double standard over at ABC regarding how the soaps are treated versus how "Katie" is being promoted: while ABC has stated their soaps needed to go because they were failures, they are promoting the "Katie" show as something that will be hip and trendy (and ignoring the fact that Katie herself was a massive failure in recent times).

Both "Katie" and The Revolution seem like tired old concepts that have been tried before. The Chew, on the other hand, is something that looks unique to network television. Therefore, I will give that show a try. (I know some have stated The Chew doesn't belong on network television because we have The Food Network, but I view this type of logic as flawed because the same type of reasoning would lead one to claim that sporting events should no longer appear on broadcast television because we have ESPN.)

I so HOPE that AMC/OLTL will do well with PP, but i dont see it happening, sadly. I think i would actually much rather watch new soaps they could create.

And i agree with you about The Chew

They're pretty much going to be new soaps anyway. I'm hoping if these turn a decent profit it may cause PP to create some other new soaps. I still want the 15 minute format.

If The Chew is a great idea, then they should have better promos than poor Clinton Kelly looking terrified at the camera.

I think 15 minutes is to short. They should go to 30 minutes, and air it Mon-Thurs.

They really should focus on Daphnie Oz and Carla Hall who are much more natural on camera.

I think 15 is a good format for today's world, but 30 minutes would be good too. It's 60 minutes I think may be too much for people, especially at first, since these shows are pretty much starting over.

The issues I have with people like Carruthers or Phelps and even Broderick to an extent is that they are engrained in how soaps are and have been. Fresh blood and I don't mean just moving people up the ranks but an influx of new blood and ideas are needed. Since the EP is supposed to help drive the creative direction of the show I'll pass on keeping her for any duration.

Agreed. And when it comes to Julie--exactly. Traditionally when soaps have been at their best, the EP doesn't just worry about lights and budget, etc, but has a strong creative vision for the show. I get the sense that JHC, as much as actors apparently love her, has and had none for AMC. Of course part of this is Frons who seemed to want to take over much of that aspect of his EPs roles, though JFP and especially FV at their ABC shows did seem to have (for good or bad) more of a vision. But at the same time I could see PP, as you said, wanting her on at least at first because she does know the show, has a report with the actors, etc. But I would like to see someone brand new come on board (I'm less concerned with the writing if LB comes on to be honest, even if I've been mixed on this era for her).

Hello! Last tape date is a week from tomorrow. And most of cara's clothes are from free people. : )

OK I feel dense, but what the heck does she mean about clothes from free people?

The Chew just looks and sounds so cheap to me--not like something you'd expect on network afternoon tv (well at least before Let's Make a Deal, etc). ANd I thought sporting events in primetime on US network tv were something that we were seeing much much less of (but I admit I only really follow Canadian hockey during the playoffs, sports wise, and maybe tennis, so have no clue what I'm talking about there).

I so HOPE that AMC/OLTL will do well with PP, but i dont see it happening, sadly. I think i would actually much rather watch new soaps they could create.

The thing is, while I hate to admit I do think they have about a 50/50 chance of hitting it off, I don't thinka brand new soap on a brand new online network would attract much attention at all, except from some soap viewers like us. I think using an established one DOES make more sense--and then using those maybe to lead into brand new programming.

I think 15 is a good format for today's world, but 30 minutes would be good too. It's 60 minutes I think may be too much for people, especially at first, since these shows are pretty much starting over.

I actually agree--and the cable network potential pick up, aside, it is easier for people to watch something on their computer that's 15-30 mins than 60...

How is the Chew a new concept? It's freaking recipes and a bunch of perky effervescent hosts nobody ever heard of who undoubtedly will be laughing up a storm at each others anti-funny comments non-stop, feigning deep interest in minutia and pointless observations on food as it relates to "lifestyles" and all that is happening in the so-called world of food, wherever that is.

Ugh it just seems so tacky to me. Like segments on a local morning news/talk show. I still hold by the Food Network comment (as well as other networks that have design, etc--speaking of didn't Nate Berkus' show tank, or is it back for a second season?) If people are really interested in cooking tips and recipes, they'll watch one of the other more thorough cooking shows. I know Rachel Ray has had success with a hybrid show but, as much as I'm not a fan, I can see her appeal more--this looks to be a weird mix that is neither fish nor fowl, to use a lame food metaphor--it doesn't even seem to have a clear concept. Everyone I know, and most of these people are non soap viewers, has commented on how off putting The Chew commercials are--though that's partly because ABC seems to play them every break.

The only existing personnel I think are absolutely essential at the new shows are Frank Valentini and possibly either Lorraine Broderick or Agnes Nixon, in whatever limited capacity she is willing at her age. I think they need new blood as HWs and definitely a new EP at AMC. Valentini OTOH has singlehandedly kept OLTL running in a way no one could've believed, for better or worse. I understand he is likely locked in to steward GH come 2012, but I hope he wiggles out of that. He is the definition of what an EP should be - efficient and focused on the overall show's success and survival.

I agree with both those points--as much as I've not liked some things I credit to FV or interviews he's given, I do give him a ton of credit for keeping OLTL around and thriving all this time. It's kinda too bad about the contract renewals, etc.

Thats cool. Did he sound like he's done with AMC?

I think VI is keeping an open mind, wanting to see what PP offers while not closing the door on new projects, especially during the fall hiatus for AMC.

If the soaps are going to follow the same length, then they won't be 60 minutes in content. They'll run about 36 minutes, which is what we get now.

It's funny/sad how much Daytime programming is commercials. I believe the rule is in primetime it has to be something like 41-42 mins of programming, and in daytime it is about 36 (Canada it's the same as primetime which is why they stuff the dcommercials when they air the soaps and other US daytime stuff with boring PSAs, or local news bits--we used to get a soap gossip/letter reading show between AMC and OLTL but it was replaced by a fitness/heatlh thing due to budget lol). Of course 30 years back or so I believe daytime was at least 42 mins, and primetime at least 45.
