Except the long-term trendlines show OLTL slightly BELOW it's April performance in viewership and demos:

April 2011 averaged 2,598,048 viewers with 670,500 in 18-49 demos.

June 2011 (thru 6/24) averaging 2,570,056 with 645,000 in 18-49 demos.

OLTL has gained 471,000 viewers compared to last year. However, the key demos gains are a measley +4,000 and alas that proves ABC's point that soaps are only capable of attracting back older viewers.

All this talk about VIEWERSHIP GAINS reminds me of when AMC's viewership gained after all the big anniversary promotion. Some of us here took note no matter what AMC how well its viewership did, it couldn't also spike up its demos and noted that was a major troubling sign.

I don't claim to know anyone at ABC but I do know someone at an Northeast affilate and those 2012 season contracts are based on a cheaper rate starting in January. Those are some tricky contracts to suddenly at the 11th hour change as the affiliates forced ABC's hand in the first place to provide cheaper programming.

Yes, but it is like talking to a brick wall. Most of the people here have ignored the importance of the 18 to 49 women demo for years. The only show that made any gains in that demo over the last two years was Days and it proceeded to collapse a year later. It makes absolutely no sense that ABC would even consider rescinding the cancellation of OLTL or that any network would be interested in buying a show like OLTL which has high production costs when it is doing so horribly in the 18 to 49 women demo.

It's possible ABC is trying to examine OLTL closely so they can use it to serve as a lead-in to their new shows. They may decide to extend it to the fall and Katie Couric's new show will take OLTL's place that fall and GH will stay on the air for the time being at 3pm.

I've been hearing that The Revolution's situation is so bad right now that it might not even make it on the air at all. They may replace it with something else but I think what its truly going to come down to is if The Chew does well or not. If The Chew doesn't do well then it's very possible they may focus on other plans on what to air in OLTL's place.

This leaked ABC excitement about viewership gains makes absolutely no sense to me either, Ann_SS, as its demos are even worse this year.

OLTL averaged 725,000 in demos for May sweeps last year also finishing in 3rd place yet Frons confirmed he almost canceled it then. This year it performed 647,000 for May sweeps (also 3rd) and I'm to believe he's so impressed he wants to rescind cancellation?

OLTL is 471,000 viewers ahead of last year, and that IS good news... except, it only managed a .1% gain in 18-49 demos. So the network whose press releases only focus on demos and whose president said aging demographics are the main problem with soaps is suddenly excited about a .1% gain? Excited enough to backtrack and reinstate a programming that is 40% more expensive to produce than their stupid reality shows?

If this happens then the only way I could see it is if The Revolution continues having problems and since they already have the sets and some people are still under contract, they would just keep OLTL going for a bit until The Revolution fixes itself or they find a replacement.

Or they could have Reba come back and sum up the current ABC lineup - A Daytime to Forget.

I have to believe they expect these new shows to get off to slow start as they find an audience. They must be willing to give them one or two sweeps periods to find their footing. I doubt that a couple of weeks of soft numbers for The Chew (Lawd I HATE that name!) is going to make them backtrack on a business strategy they've been executing for more than a year. Plus, help me out here, but aren't the hosts of these shows under a contract with ABC? So that's money committed. If The Revolution needs more time, ABC could honestly fill that space with old classic episodes of OLTL or AMC and kill time for a few months. It wouldn't cost them a thing and they could move all that production budget to The Revolution to fix it. They already have a history of showing reruns and the offline soap fans would eat it up.

The repeats would probably be under the floor in terms of ratings.

Considering how much they want The Chew to be their huge breakout hit, I wouldn't be surprised if they just show reruns of that in OLTL's timeslot.

I think you're right about that. That would be two hours of The Chew. Talk about overkill but it would serve it's purpose.

I think the soap repeats could work with a little promotion. "It's classic love in the afternoon! Go back to the beginning and fall in love all over again" It's cliche and stupid but it's cheap. Of course it serves the very audience they want nothing to do with. So yeah, scratch it.

If it were up to me, working with their current lineup, I would put together repeats of GH episodes that go in line with the supposed improvements we will see with GH. I would also interview past and present cast members, and perhaps hobble together a flashback episode with the Spencers, the Quartermaines, with returns for Monica, Lesley, Audrey, etc. But then, if it's true that they are done with GH, that would also be pointless...

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.

    • The counts seem small even for B&B. Thanks for posting!
    • Sooo Nick is inviting Sharon to France for this Dumas party thing. The same place they reconnected years ago during the Shick/Phick years. I wonder if it’s going to be on location? I’m going to assume not. I’m sure Y&R doesn’t have that kind of budget anymore.
