Rex wanting Clint to die is more than over the top. Clint did change the paternity test and has been rather nasty to Rex, but that's hardly enough for Rex to want him to die. He's more obsessed with punishing Clint than he is Gigi.

Rex never cared about Gigi anyway - he cheated on her and trained their son to verbally abuse her. She is a possession to him, no more or less.

I don't blame Rex for hating Clint, not after what Clint did to Shane, but JPL is just unable to present any emotion beyond petulance. I have read comments talking about how hilarious it is to see Rex trying to kill Clint, but I really don't think the writers intended for this to be a yukfest. I think they assumed this was grand drama.
