I actually think the replacements will be slightly lower and the demos too. I mean look at the lineup now. 1.7s across the board except for OLTL. I see those shows getting a 1.5 rating with .7 demos or so.

I think the demos for the CBS replacements are lower in 18-49 than ATWT and GL.

Ultimately if it's about cheapness then the cheapest solution of all will be giving up those timeslots altogether. I think that's what ABC is moving towards.

I found it very telling that the most recent episode of ABC's 20/20 focused exclusively on reality television. They claimed they were examining the impact of the genre on pop culture but to me it just seemed like they were re-branding ABC as your reality tv network. It was pathetic to see a so-called news show do that.

It seems to have fallen into the same no man's land that LMAD is in. The last I heard they had just lost another EP.

marceline, it doesn't help that generally ABC is pretty bad at producing reality shows. Their only hits have been DWTS and the various incarnations of The Bachelor. The rest has been close to trainwreck (remember Are You Hot?).

Unfortunately IMO of course GH can't be a real soap opera for one, they can't break up a couple for a good story (drama)

as soon as they do the fangurls whine bitch and moan...its hard to have pure soap when couples are safe and ironclad..while other

characters get hacked away, clubbed to death taking hit after hit. Everytime there's a triangle its pretty much the same characters unless its like Jax now (because the character is leaving)...I'm not surprised GH is last I expected it sooner. The storytelling is (misogynistic) and horrendous Guza should have been gone years ago...now its too late.

Now that Carlivati is on maybe something can seem different for me instead of the same formula style storytelling.

I posted these items over at the "Tomlin Fired" and "Francisco San Martin Fired" threads, but they can also apply here...as one or both may effect the ratings.

I wonder if NBC has privately told Ken Corday that "Days" needs to shape or the network will ship it out when its contract ends in September 2013? There has been an awful lot of activity...Head Writer Dena Higley was fired, then "big name" cast members like Louise Sorel and Crystal Chappel are sent packing, and now Gary Tomlin is fired as co-executive producer. That's a lot of change in just a short amount of time.

I'm not really sad to see Francisco San Martin (Dario) go...he's not a bad actor, he's just stuck in a bad character. Other than his love-hate relationship with Melanie, he didn't have much to do...which begs the question, why introduce him at all? I had hoped when San Martin first appeared, that he would be the character to "turn" Will Horton gay. That would have been an interesting plot...having Will fall for his girlfriend's ne'er do well brother. In addition, the soap could actually put the focus on its Hispanic family - the Hernandez's - since, for the most part, homosexuality is still considered a taboo topic among that ethnic group. Instead, Dario started to make puppy dog eyes at Melanie and the will-they-won't-they banter soon started. Dario was such a wasted opportunity...I wish San Martin luck at finding future, more challenging, roles.

I keep thinking Corday got some kind of wakeup call from NBC because they threatened to pull it sooner if they didn't see some improvement. I don't

buy for a second Corday fired Higley because all of a sudden the show has been performing badly. Its been trending downward for a year.

He's taking action now and assuring viewers trying to keep people engaged over the summer so they don't abandon the show with the expectation

come Sept there will be huge changes. Interviews, and massive firings and large impact returns. I think he thought this book tour was going

to keep fans interested and it hasn't. And Comcast has no love for soaps. But pairing DOOL down to 15 cast members could position the show

for syndication perhaps if it becomes even less costly who knows.

Carlivati is coming in as a script writer. I assume his joining GH is more about the fact he is still under an active contract and perhaps

Frons wanting to keep him because other shows are interested. No clue. IF they have to pay him anyway they might as well use him and they

could probably dump one of their current writers.

AS for GH worrying about fanbases, if thats the case thats pretty pathetic that they run their show catering to fanbases versus telling good story. Not shocking at all.

This is what I took away from Anne Sweeney's comments about treating daytime like primetime...Canceling series and changing time slots should not be treated as an unusual event.

That is what I meant with the comment about those short-lived game shows and soaps from the 1950s to 1980s. If a soap or game show failed to meet expectations, they were yanked from the schedule. NBC, due to its historical third place finish in daytime, is the worst offender. For the most part, ABC's soap schedule has been unchanged for thirty years...only the 12:30 p.m. time slot seems to have undergone radical change ("Ryan's Hope", "Loving", "The City", "Port Charles" and finally given back to affiliates).

I see what you mean now. I think the difference then and now is quality of product; it's usually just pabulum and replaced by pabulum. Like ABC's primetime lineup. There are also some schedule changes I haven't ever understood, like the long breaks they had with Flash Forward and V which basically guaranteed the shows would have no ratings recovery.

If ABC were replacing their soaps with something unique then I'd be more inclined to support it, but instead it's just a rehash.

CBS just announced that they delivered a 40 percent sweeps rating increase over the network's same programming last year (which, by the way, was the soap opera "As The World Turns").

That's pretty impressive just from a numbers standpoint. Factor in the tailored-to-moms vibe, and you've got a solid ad-sales pitch.

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.

    • The counts seem small even for B&B. Thanks for posting!
    • Sooo Nick is inviting Sharon to France for this Dumas party thing. The same place they reconnected years ago during the Shick/Phick years. I wonder if it’s going to be on location? I’m going to assume not. I’m sure Y&R doesn’t have that kind of budget anymore.
