No, you're right--in a way that was its strength. I think, obviously Vicki (and to a lesser degree characters like Dorian) helped anchor a lot of that element. I think that's one reason I disagree with people like Khan who see the Malone/Griffith/Gottlieb era as gutting the show--I have a bias as that's when I got hooked, but regardless what one thinks about bringing it back to its original theme, or that it needed to be revamped, the show had a history of that already.

I do agree that Ron's "clever" way of connecting everyone reeks of fanfic--particularly because there's no pay off (a running theme with OLTL the last decade). It's been a cliche since the 40s with Phillips to tie random charcters together, but even the semi debacle of AMC having Damon be Tad's child with Hillary and the execs not letting her on the show, had SOME good character scenes pay off.

I don't think they ruined the show intentionally, and they saved the show in many ways - I'm not sure it would have lasted another twenty years if they hadn't shown up. I think the problem is their most dangerous ideas are what was carried on, and their best ideas were jettisoned. I will never believe Todd - any Todd - should have been a leading man, or a long-term character, and that skew was essentially the death of Kevin and Joey and Cord and any leading man who wasn't a sociopath. The Victor molester storyline is the other story of theirs I feel led to disastrous decisions because of some weird need to one-up Malone's writing - I imagine, or hope anyway, that Malone never intended for his story to be regurgitated that way, and worst of all, for someone at OLTL to begin fetishizing sexual abuse.

I always ask myself with these insta-relatives - did one good story come out of Todd, Rex, or David being glued to core families? For me, it never happened. I guess it's hypocritical, because I loved Megan as Viki's insta-daughter, but they at least had a lot of strong scenes for the few years they were together.

I don't think it's fair to say they never wrote anything you connected to - I remember you being pretty into Kish and Sky, among others. They're certainly not without their massive flaws and mistakes, but they did do a number of stories I care about, I'm enjoying most of the end and it does feel like OLTL to me, however battered and bruised over the last 12-something years.

I just seems extremely random to bring Giles Morgan back to hold Clint and Echo hostage, he has no history with them. I think Kim Zimmer was married to the actor who played him though. Despjte that, it just made no sense. I think Pat was just about to leave around that time and he also knew Samantha, Dorian and Viki.

It's too bad they wasted Robert Gentry that way. I wonder if anyone at ABC saw his potential - how soon after this was he on AMC?

Do you know when exactly Pat left? For a long, long time, I thought she was fired from OLTL because Rauch was on the way, but I guess that's one of those things which just sounds true, and actually isn't.

Sorry to change gears, but here's another 1994 clip. Is it me or were they heavily pointing to a Who Killed RJ? story.

) Anyways... I did really feel disgusted by Eurovision this year and I doubt I'll watch this horrific musical torture in the future. My ears and my psyche will not survive.
    • Regarding the mobster storyline: The scripts, the cardroom set, and the writing for Joey -- are all terrible. They seem to be writing a realistic depiction of compulsive gambling as an addiction, showing that it pops into his head all the time -- it has become hardwired into his brain.  The APA (American Psychological Association) describes compulsive gambling as having a similar effect on the physical brain as drug and alcohol addiction. https://www.apa.org/monitor/2023/07/how-gambling-affects-the-brain I think Jason Graham (Doug) is doing an adequate job playing Doug as a compulsive gambler, with the thoughts/urges coming into his head all the time, and being unable to stop. However, the cardroom set is awful and the mobster storyline is a bad cliché, so it's all so uninteresting to watch. I think Mr. Graham is doing the best he can with the crap they gave him to work with. If anyone reading or watching has a gambling issue, check out Gamblers Anonymous.  They have many types of meetings -- in-person, online, video, audio, etc.  They also have resources for friends/family of compulsive gamblers.
    • Today was painful (especially for Philip).  I still feel for Xander. He was clear he was happy sharing and working with Philip. It's just one more betrayal from someone he loved. Going back to last year when he found out about Victor and Fiona, then Alex and Philip. He forgave and tried. Then Philip went behind his back again. He's been walking on the edge for weeks. This is a man who was abused, neglected and has never had any therapy for his horrific past. He has zero coping skills because he's never learned them. I hate this but I refuse to hate Xander
    • Lucy Coe wasn't even this big of a whore.
    • Kate being the one that Alex called was a nice surprise. The cut to her looking all sheek made me instantly get excited for her to get back into business mode. And the Jack reference from when she first came to town (on-screen) was inserted naturally which is always welcome. When they were talking about how much sex sells, I almost got the impression they were sizing each other up in a May/December type of way.  All the Philip stuff was gruesome. I'm happy the show isn't shying away from Xander's ugliness. I love them both, and it just makes me intrigued for the aftermath for it all to be taken seriously. I cheered when Philip spat out at that Sarah knew the truth. I'm on tenterhooks for their eventual confrontation. I was surprised that Kate wasn't a little vicious towards Sarah for Xander's obvious behavior, but maybe that's still to come. How wonderfully entangled is it that both Philip and Shawn/Steve stopped each other from getting the drug. Both equally at fault. Who/what will ultimately save Bo? And with everything going on, is a Salem where it's looking likely that EJ is about to own the hospital imminent?
    • Oddly.. Chase and Steve seem to have both vanished from the canvas in December so the Estelle return loses impact when two of her kids stop appearing shortly after her return (and I assume TR leaves in early 1986 as well). The Steve recast doesn't work... but it's odd that he has a long scene with Teri with Cagney looking jealous.. when the majority of his time on the show previously was a relationship and engagement to Stephanie (who he barely has a scene with in the episodes I see). Your idea for Wendy/Bela/Stephanie sounds just like what Ryan's Hope did with Michael/Kim/Rae... and considering Louise Shaffer was playing Rae and Stephanie.. it would have been a lousy redux of a superior story on another soap (that had months of build-up) I think Quinn becoming assistant to Stephanie was Mayer/Braxton... but not 100 % sure. I don't know if Mayer/Braxton was setting up Sarah as a bad girl disguised as a good girl.. but the actress (Joyner) was playing the scenes in that manner.. and Tomlin wisely tapped into that when he took over.
    • She’s such a caricature - which is a shame because I think the actress is capable of so much more.   I don’t know why Cady often feels like she has overcompensated in her performances. She already proved she can play much more than just Dixie Cooley during her first stint at ATWT (her best acting era). Her performances in various roles since then have been quite strange at times.
