Late 80s AMC might as well be an entirely different show for me. I don't think I've ever spent any time watching clips or even reading about storylines from that era at all.

I get what you're saying. I feel a similar way.

That's interesting. What do you guys think accounts for that?

The late 80s were when the show was in a bit of a slump and Behr was hired as EP--and she hired Margaret DePriest to try to cut back on cast and integrate the community more (while SOD said the show was in a slump under DePriest, it seemed like she did her job, and was quickly hired over at OLTL to do the same, which didn't happen as well but OLTL was in a worst state). I know many felt AMC from '87-'89 got more and more fragmented. Once DePriest moved to OLTL, Agnes Nixon returned to head write (with McTavish) for the next two years.

I miss AMC and I can't wait for it to return in January!

For me it's the one 1990 episode I've seen that seemed the most alien. Jeremy and Trevor in a brawl at Stuart's museum...poor, delicious Nancy Addison (RIP) in bizarre B&W fantasies about torturing Natalie...Eric the clown. It just seemed grafted on.

Yeah the Eric the clown stuff was particularly a mess. I think they were trying to contain the cast more, but there;s probably a reason why Agnes Nixon came back as HW not long after.

To be honest, the whole 1985-1995ish time period is sketchy for me, which is weird. When I first got into the show, I read in-depth yearly summaries for all of the 70s (on SOC), so that's why I know so much about that period, and then the early 80s is a heavily-talked about period of the show, so I sort of picked up knowledge of it over the years (and now I've seen a ton of eps from then, so that helps). Thanks to most of you old people here, I have lots of secondhand knowledge of 90s stuff, but for whatever reason, it's like the late 80s never get talked about. I know so little about characters like Nico, Julie, Emily Ann, and even Jeremy and Natalie in their heyday. That one episode with Cliff in a jungle somewhere was a huge turn-off, but I know I need to complete my Pine Valley studies sooner or later

1985-1987 seems to be the time with the start of the biggest transition and the wandering tone. Back when Soapnet used to run old episodes and they'd show a few glimpses of that time it was very tough to engage. I remember sort of cringing at the episode where Erica had to drive Travis' race car, and cringing at anything with Michael Tylo in that odd role.

I actually liked the week of Dec 1987 episodes posted a lot (I think that's what you mean about the Cliff in the jungle story). It does seem to be an era where the soap was on a bit of a downslide.

I mostly remember the scenes with Natalie and Pat, which I thought were very good. In a lot of ways I'm sorry that Natalie and her legacy amounted to just being "Doll."

I have zero memories of Michael Tylo as a kid, he's someone I came to know through the All About Erica video. I guess I have a lot of late '80s memories because I was still spending a lot of time with my grandparents during the summer, my mom was taping, and my brain was sharper than for my early '80s Dorothy Lyman-Opal/Ray Gardner/Silver/Langley fantasizing about killing Phoebe memories.

Julie and Charlie and Nico and Cecily, I guess that was like '88? I remember Julie and her strife with Ross and Ellen and bio dad Mark. Of course Cindy and Stuart (wow, I recall a family member innocently wondering aloud why Stuart was always kissing Cindy...). I remember Donna and Benny being together and Emily Ann and the return of her bio dad Billy Clyde before Tad went over the bridge and Emily Ann went over the edge herself with Joey (Jake). I guess this was all late '80s.

The Emily Ann stuff was about 1990 I think.

I still wonder how people felt about Terrell Anthony temping as Tad Martin.
