I haven't watched the story in full so I'm not sure if he was ever meant to be anything but a con artist. I think it's an interesting story idea for Phoebe but I might have told the story several years earlier.

Wade was meant to be a con-artist trying to bilk Phoebe out of her money, and I believe he did succeed in breaking up Phoebe/Langley.. while I believe he was related to Robin (Hunter Tylo) who either knew about his plan and got second thoughts.. or was in the dark about it. I think a combination of the Wade conning Phoebe, Robin, and Skye were the reasons why Hilary dumped Tad and he left town with his tail between his legs.

Watching those June 1986 episodes, I was surprised Edna was still on the show especially since Dottie had already left the show by that time. I also smiled seeing Tom/Erica being so friendly and warm with one another... it's a shame the show never thought to interact them more in the 90s. It looks as though this Skye was being tested with Tom during this time.. and I'm going to say that I've never understood the love Robin Christopher got (she had a very unlikable vibe and was quite frankly a boring Skye & Lorna).

HA yes this has been one of those moments with this rewatch where I was thinking--I watched the show SOO closely at this time, and have absolutely, positively, ZERO recollection of this.

They've made quite a lot of use of PVU frat student Jason--he has a friendship/flirty thing with Dixie (which is hilarious to watch as she really doesn't, umm, seem his type) but also is friends with Matteo who he parties with, and brags about all the crazy frat parties. The actor is typically 90s hot but not a great actor (not awful and he has a lot of awkward lines to deliver.) I'm wondering if, with a new actor, this becomes Jason, Kevin Sheffield's homophobic older brother who works at the Cutting Edge and has a crush on Dixie (I'm guessing... yes? But when I first watched I don't think I made the connection.)

Sally Sussman started writing Dina having Alzheimer's symptoms playing out over time in storylines, but Dina's diagnosis wasn't announced before Sally left. Sally confirmed in her exit interview that it was indeed Alzheimer's. The formal diagnosis was written by Mal Young when he started.

Sally felt this type of story was important for soaps to tell.
Mal focused on this because his mother had Alzheimer's.

from Sally's exit interview:
"I was very wary of false drama; big events with no payoffs, no real stakes in the end where nothing changed. For example, no one died or was forever altered. I wanted the show (and the genre) to be more topical; to do issues that were really affecting people’s lives: example Dina Abbott’s struggle with Alzheimer's disease. This was a major reason I pursued the documentary genre because I felt daytime wasn’t living up to its potential. I’d felt the genre had been dumbed down and as a 30-year viewer, I lost interest. It wasn’t the genre I’d fallen in love with as a kid in the 70’s. But the sci-fi stuff, stolen babies, doppelgangers, people returning from the dead, etc. felt very passe to me, so I really hoped to make the show more cutting edge like daytime used to be in 80’s and 90’s, where the genre broke new ground. What I didn’t realize though is that the audience currently watching had really gotten used to this type of storytelling"

One Life to Live Tribute Thread

I think Cathy's fate may have been sealed when Robin Strasser passed on the part. We know Agnes wanted her to take over and reignite the popular AW triangle with her, George Reinholt and Jacquie Courtney. Cathy was already a spoiler for Tony and Pat at that point, I believe.
Jennifer Harmon is very solid as the traumatized Cathy but you can tell even from the small amount of episodes we have that she is much more of a suffering figure of pity than Dorrie Kavanaugh's spiky feminist. Tony pities her in order to stay with her, Joe pities her, she denies herself a relationship with Larry near the end, etc. She was a character the audience cared about and who I often thought about having return in some way, whose various iterations I wish I could see much more of (especially Kavanaugh and Catherine Burns, who was so amazing in Last Summer), but by the end it seemed like she just ran out of steam because of how she had changed with the recast. That's not a complaint about the stories for me, because from what I've seen '70s OLTL is pretty damn good. Whatever the actors moaned about then it looks like Shakespeare compared to some stuff down the road.

Knots Landing

I think Latham and co were going to do a 90s version of Val/Gary/Abby... but doing it with Anne instead of Abby. Val going crazy and being unhinged to the point where both Mac and Karen would side with Gary, feel for him, and be understanding that he was driven away by Val. And his interactions with Anne were both a testing of the waters in terms of chemistry between Gary/Anne.. and also a way for Val to go unhinged. Naturally it didn't work especially given that Ms. Phillips was fighting a Gary and Ann pairing behing the scenes as we now know :)
Two positives of this story for me were as follows:
1) It did allow some interaction between Val and Paige during that story (much like the Tidal energy story allowed some good interactions between Paige/Gary that we hadn't seen much of since season 8)
2) Val was torturing Gary.. a nice little karmic punishment for the way he treated her during their 2nd remarriage in the earlier seasons. Unpopular opinion, but I totally was in support of her not telling Gary that the twins were his given his track record and his tendency to fall off the wagon at the slighest sign of stress.

Agreed, they should bring some young Newmans and Abbotts, but I would also bring in new characters and families.
And yes, they should just merge Newman and Abbott and just have one company, forget Chancellor and all the other conglomerates that these characters operate from Genoa City :P
Oh most definitely, soaps used to have small budgets and they made it work better than they do today. My guess is that in the past, a bigger percentage of the budget went into actual production, while I think today a lot of is spent for salaries and rent and different licences. Which is why I think Y&R is suffering, having so many veteran actors still on the forefront.
Out of curiosity, I went to calculate average character duration for all the 4 long-running soaps today. I took into consideration the year of character debut (for characters born on screen, I took a year when they were SORASed into teens). Some of them might have gone away and come back, so maybe the character wasnt on screen all those years, but I didn't go into that much detail.
So... Y&R has by far the cast of characters who are there for the longest time. Their average for the entire cast in 2026 (Jan-May) is 25 years. And if you just look at top 10 characters based on appearances, it is even worse: 31 years!

I think you're right about the kidnapping story, but I admit i LOVE the Cathy in the hospital scenes that we've seen (maybe I wouldn't if I had to watch them daily for weeks)--the almost Gothic feeling is just my kind of thing.

I know we often say it but it's easy to forget--partly due to lack of footage--just how much Cathy was one of the main characters in the show for much of the 70s (and of course we see young Cathy on that one 1969 episode...) (Looking at the 1967 All My Children bible I'm reminded that Nixon originally intended Joe Martin and family to be Joe Craig--I guess she poached the name for OLTL)

Others know the Mal Young saga far better than me. I just remember he allegedly bigfooted Sussman out of the way and was all in on Gina's Phyllis and Billy together, maybe even putting together some sort of special presentation to try to sell them to the network lol.

I do think there are ways to navigate a shoestring budget, but the bigger issue is laziness. Soaps in the 50’s through 70’s had limited budgets but managed to be compelling on a day to day basis.
Y&R will eventually be getting new studio space in a few years when its lease with Televisions City expires. Hopefully, that helps with the set situation and they can use more. Maybe then Sony will actually pour some budget back into production as well? Hell, there has already been some minor improvements (though limited) since Sally McDonald took over production. I do think she has more of an eye in this regard than Griffith, and before that, Anthony Morina ever did.
