AMC and OLTL Canceled!

If she's that shrewd I'm not sure why she would launch OWN when she didn't have time to oversee it properly, and when it has a weak lineup. I don't think she's made the best decisions when it comes to her cable channels.

(I do agree with her that there's no reason to buy the soaps - but that doesn't make me understand why she can't have ANY scripted programming).

I think Oprah is crippling herself by not doing any scripted programming. It doesn't have to be OLTL or AMC, or any soap for that matter. But she needs to do at least one or two shows. And syndicate old shows too.

Why would anyone want to watch a show about the Judd's farm, in a world of Jersey Shore?

(Now I personally FLOVE the Judd's, but I know I'm the exception not the rule)

LOL I just cannot watch that channel! So distracting. We are talking MAJOR pay/cast/crew cuts and union contract mess here but I do wish amc and oltl could have been some sort of pioneers in the online soap revolution. Record player here but I thought that Griffin abc.com prequel was shot beautifully and with online viewing becoming what it is...

I think my Robin love is apparent but it's not a valid argument to say that Oprah is turning her back on the daytime audience that made her cuz well... people actually watch Oprah. She's not the one who was hurting. What was wrong she made it right and the soaps didn't do that for themselves.

Well someone's watching it because it has gotten pretty good ratings for the network thus far

http://www.thefutoncritic.com/ratings/2011/04/20/own-oprah-winfrey-network-posts-second-consecutive-week-of-double-digit-growth-across-key-demos-in-primetime-versus-year-ago-discovery-health-numbers-4514/20110420own01/

I'm sure when Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Ryan & Tatum O'Neal's and Sarah Ferguson's shows premiere (again I don't get why these shows weren't ready when the network originally launched), the network will be in better shape, not to mention the return of Ling's "Our America" and the specials from Julia Roberts, Forrest Whitaker and Goldie Hawn

I don't think she's said never, just not right now and since she can't even get her unscripted programs together and placed properly in the lineup I think it's best she hold off on trying to tackle any scrited projects for the time being.

Why do you think that? Not having scripted programs is the least of her problems. Not having new or original programming at all is the major issue. For weeks people were watching the same episodes of "Ask Oprah all stars" and "What Would You Do: OWN edition." She lined up all of these shows with all of these 'big names' and yet they premiere once a month. April was The Judds, May will be Shania and so on. I don't see the sense in tackling scripted programming (which is a more time consuming process and requires a lot more money) when there are so many other issues that need to be addressed first. In all of the articles being written about OWN's issues, very few of them cite "lack of scripted programs" as a major factor.

I think we're reading different articles.

And in a world dominated by reality television, Oprah is NOT bringing it. I know it's sad, but America is not interested in educational, or meaningful reality TV. And they're not interested in the mundane life of celebrities on a farm.

If Oprah wants reality TV to be her niche, she needs to come out with "25 Bitches, 1 House" or some sh!t.

I respect Oprah for not having trashy shows, but most of the shows she does have are fronted by people who aren't exactly major draws these days, and in some cases are a huge mess (Ferguson, Tatum O'Neal). I also don't know if I've ever seen anything of Julia Roberts or Shania Twain that suggests they have any personality to front a TV show (Julia on talk shows/award shows can be tough to sit through).

It just sounds like she threw together dated names to try to fill up her channel in a hurry.

Oh I agree. I respect her for it too, but she's not going to get very far in reality TV the way she's doing it. That's why I stand by the idea that she needs scripted programming or original movies...Something.

Also, she shouldn't have launched the network until January 2012. Fresh AFTER her show ended. People would be going through Oprah withdrawl and actually be interested in tuning in to see her agin. Launching it this year, simulataneous with her daytime show, has allowed people to become bored. The network isn't big anymore. It's there. It will be there when her show ends...Just like it was a year earlier.

I think she should have waited.

Julia Roberts doesn't have a show, it's a documentary on moms featuring Hilary Clinton and some other people. I don't believe she's in it, she just produced it and narrates it.

Honestly? It seems like a waste of time to debate this with those who don't have or have never seen the network. I'm not sure how this could be a real conversation of value. That's like me, having never seen an episode of AMC, trying to debate with people why it sucks because I read an article Nelson Branco wrote saying it sucks. That makes sense how? I don't get how you can give an opinion on what a network needs if you've never seen any show at all on the network. Well I guess everyone has an opinion, but it's like trying to explain all of the issues and changes that need to be made in a Ron Howard film that you've never seen before.

    • In the new Soap Hub Says podcast they now refer to Bill as BilltheFixer. I love it!!! The moniker fits.
    • I see people saying this a lot but I always thought both things were plot points with a specific purpose. Martin running for president (something that would've been years down the line) was just to give us an opportunity to learn about his secret and that it involves Anita and Vernon. Naomi's lawsuit was used to develop her relationship with Bill and highlight his health issue. Those cases are almost always settled out of court so I didn't find anything odd about that, it was all about Naomi and Bill. I do wonder if Mike might've had better chemistry with Jen Jacob. At this point I feel he's right there with Derek in terms of being a weak link. He's a better actor but he doesn't have chemistry with anyone. These are the two characters I really hope they get a handle on in coming months.
    • From the original report, via Variety (December 2020): ❝ The project is currently titled Pine Valley, named after the fictional Philadelphia suburb that served as the setting for All My Children. In the new series, a young journalist with a secret agenda comes to expose the dark and murderous history of a town named Pine Valley only to become entangled in a feud between the Kane and Santos families. ❞
    • Yes; plus, it's supposedly the home of the trauma Alexis experienced when they were in that storyline, etc., a.k.a., another recycled and redressed set. Wouldn't surprise me, especially since Melgar did the "GH Live!" episodes and those weird-ahh outros we got. Although, given that Melgar has been more aligned with the views of ex-Jax, part of me feels like she wouldn't be asked back.  Probably because of Luke, and if Laura accepts Sonny, then the audience automatically will, too. I mean, because she does means you do, right?! Right?!
    • Yes, Portugal qualifying was definitely a shock. I'm not crazy about the Ukrainian entry either, but that was always going to qualify for obvious reasons.  I was a bit surprised that they had the video message from Cèline Dion already in the semifinal. I would have thought they would save that for the final on Saturday.
    • Of course. With my luck Frank would probably bring Lily back from the dead and pay Lilly Melgar to do a cameo with Sonny instead though.

Seriously, I know I am late to the party, but why are Sonny and Laura bff?  They've always been friends or friendly although I never considered them to be super-duper close.  I always thought Laura mostly tolerated him for Luke's sake.  The way the show is pretending they've had this decades long tight knit friendship is just weird and OTT.
    •   It's just so much fun!   She really was what made the show come together. I remember thinking what a mistake it was to write her out temporarily. I wonder how I'll feel during this rewatch, but I'm fairly certain her absence contributed to the show ending after season 5.
    • Thank you @Paul Raven The Kay/Kill stuff sounds like fire.   @soapfan770 I saw someone asking about old episodes you had... in case anyone has old tapes but not a VCR, DM me, I am willing to convert them for free.
