LOL!

Perhaps this is an opportunity to ask: apart from game shows, trashy talk shows and re-runs, do you think a kind of a news show could replace a soap or two? On which network? And how do you see the format? Would it be something Nightline-esque or morning show for daytime kind of thing?

I don't know why they keep trying with the Early Show. It is always in third place and I don't even know if it turns a profit. Does it?

I hope they keep Harry Smith around. I don't like him as much as I did in the CBS This Morning years but he's still one of my favorite hosts on the networks, by far.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think a one hour news show could totally work in daytime TV. I think it'd get better ratings than anything else in daytime and here's why:

We're constantly in an age where we're being inundated with news and information being thrown at us 24/7. We love headlines about Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, and Anna Nicole(dating myself a bit here). A mid-day news show would be a blend of morning TV and the nightly news. Devote the first fifteen minutes to reading news between two anchors(one male, one female), then devote the rest of the time between the two anchors and their cooking segments, packaged pieces, celebrity interviews and news, political news, etc.

But make this hour available for "Anything Can Happen!" President Obama's press conferences, a high-speed chase from anywhere in the country, Columbine 2.0, breaking news about the royals, Bin Laden's new tape, etc. That's the problem with a show like "The View" or "The Talk," you can't just break in without it being a "special report." This type of newscast could be shot live on the east coast, taped on the West Coast(with the exception of breaking news).

There's a reason why Conan's numbers turned to sh*t after his first few months: one could argue that it's because he sucks, another could argue it's because of having Jay Leno as a poor lead-in for the local news, but it mainly had to do with Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett's deaths being covered on Nightline. Nightline destroyed all the late-night shows because they were the only ones that had that extra bit of news and interviews available to people who didn't catch anything during the day or those who want to watch every bit of news on it. That was a news show...which takes next to nothing to produce in terms of a budget.

I'd prefer to see one of the three ABC soaps knocked out and this news hour going live at Noon or 1PM on a delay. This news hour could be a lead-in or lead-out to someone's local news. People are gonna be far more inclined to tune into an hour of more relevant, new celebrity gossip or breaking world headlines than watch Sharon Case do her usual confused, lost, desperate pouting on Y&R. This news hour would kill Y&R's ratings, even if it was short-term. And this news hour might even help the remaining ABC soaps...Jimmy Kimmel's ratings were sh*t until Nightline did a revamp and went for a younger audience.

But please, no Ashleigh Banfield. She's trashy, tabloid, wannabe feminist nonsense. I have no idea why ABC even hired her. I just roll my eyes during every single one of her pieces.

If Frons is looking to another talk show to pull his ailing lineup out of the gutter, he should really focus his efforts on teaming with the new ABC News chief and channeling his energy into an hour mid-day news show.

God, I accidentally stumbled upon a Saturday edition of The Early Show or something like that where he was co-anchoring or newsreading and I was like ^_^ I've been in love ever since.

I used to love watching Erica Hill when she was doing Prime News Tonight on HLN(with Mike Galanos*). I'm glad to see she moved off that network and that she's being promoted.

I don't even know who the hell that guy is. I'm just offended that they would put Jeff Glor at the newsdesk when he's clearly morning anchor material.

ETA: * before Mike Galanos became Sean Hannity-lite.

And is it just me or is Ms. Marysol like a Latina Jillian Barberie? Maybe they're getting ready to Good Day LA The Early Show? That wouldn't be a bad thing. A three second delay with a bunch of drunk, salty anchors. But I don't think network TV is ready for that.
