THR dishes on AMC vs. Frank Darabont in Season 2, with an unsealed deposition.

 

While I think Frank Darabont's a very talented writer and filmmaker I think the show has advanced leaps and bounds since his tenure and his run looks dated by comparison. That being said, he set the tone from the pilot, the show was/is a blockbuster, and AMC has always been very cheap and reluctant to compete with prestige cable budgets while still wanting the premium cable prestige.

 

Tellingly, Glen Mazzara chimes in and seems to blame Kirkman, which I recall being a rumored issue. I think Scott Gimple is the one who has learned how to deal with the excitable gorilla that is Kirkman without turning the show into pure fan service schlock. In the hands of two other showrunners Michonne (a ridiculous character in the comic, IMO, and one of many others, like Morgan) would have been a joke. Abraham almost was.

AMC execs are the worst.  What a bunch of cheap asses.  And it shows with these unnecessary stand-alone episodes and not utilizing half the cast for a handful of episodes a season.    Breaking Bad was another very successful show that the execs screwed with due to their cheapness.

This is a part of an ongoing video series where the different comic book characters get together to discuss why their movies are better than each other.   So they all have this bar where they sit around and talk, and now they decided to let TV people in, and that is how this is on topic for both walking dead and talking dead....

That was an intensely crowd-pleasing episode on every possible level. Especially my Rick/Michonne shipper levels, and my inherent belief in the show's capacity for positive change in a post-apocalyptic world - something I think the showrunners have always believed in, but Robert Kirkman not so much. It's always been a constant tug of war with his adolescent nihilism in the source material and making a genuinely good TV show. I was glad they made Rick finally have a real epiphany about Alexandria.

 

Does Danai Gurira have an Emmy yet? Does Andrew Lincoln? Melissa McBride?

Greg Nicotero on the episode. It was apparently Scott Gimple's choice to do the cheesy flashbacks when Jessie finally bought it, which I felt was a mistake. It doesn't look like '70s filmmaking in the way they thought - those quick cuts were never as stylized, nor would I have expended them on her.

 

The Kirkman.

 

Scott Gimple. Yes, Carl, they did plan to kill Jessie and co. all along. I will take my No-Prize!


Alexandra Breckenridge talks about gettin et.

 

I thought Breckenridge was a solid actress who did some very good work in the first half of the season. We keep forgetting these were very sheltered people dealing with a horrific new situation, who weren't making excuses for it (like Morgan). That said, I wasn't sorry to see Jessie go - I felt the subplot with Rick was rushed and unnecessary from the comics, especially when this episode then had such a strong showing for Rick/Michonne/Carl in the back half, which has always felt like the true north.

 

I'll also miss the kids playing her sons - Austin Abrams as Ron, who had much better stuff in other things, and poor little Major Dodson as Sam. I thought that was very sad that Carol's warning to him ended his life in his worst nightmare; I hope they let Carol react to what happened to him because I loved their bond. I was kind of hoping Sam would be the only Anderson to live, but of course here and in the comics he was the first to go (minus Drunk Dad).

 

Those characters had both good material (Jessie coming to terms with the zombie apocalypse, Sam traumatized) in the first half of the season, and some hackeneyed or rushed stuff (the Rick/Jessie 'affair,' Ron and Chekhov's Gun). Lifting them out, as it was in the comics, with the slight change made (Ron being Carl's shooter) just feels like TWD hacking off a bad limb. It makes it feel like even more of a waste of time despite the good performances and some good writing, so I'm glad it's done.

      The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.

      So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.

      It does seem cheap and lazy for this show to have just one family. Passions was heavily criticized but it was nicely structured with a total of four families.

      I think it was definitely a surprising reveal in the storyline. I had a hard time appreciating Evan because I couldn't get behind his interest in Amanda. But that's because I never thought Sandra Ferguson made her a compelling character (although to give her credit she occasionally had decent emotional scenes with Mac or Rachel).

      I'll even go further... I'll make her re-think BeLief and create a new patent. Brooke needs stuff to do. Anything other than beg or be in her panties. We need her to be creative. But sadly Bradley has a very low opinion of these characters. To him Brooke is nothing more than sex and scandal... or a pathetic doormat. Ridge is nothing more than a chauvinist pig that needs to pit women against each other to feel like A MAN and Steffy is nothing more than her father's guard-dog. I don't even want to open my mouth about Hope. She is such a fiasco in my opinion... I will not suffer if they kill her off. Bradley pooped on her character and now it's too late to fix it. Annika is great and I would hate to see her go, but slutty Hope was not her thing. The vibe was missing.

      I've seen Jason interact with Mitch and annoy him. That's as far as I recall. I didn't even have a slight idea that Evan had a vendetta against Rachel... That came as a surprise to me. I thought Evan was Iris's dog and that's it. Now he's definitely more interesting.

      Uh-oh. Today just might’ve been the first Paula/Jeanne stinker. I have a feeling whose fault that might be though. So, Doug III is getting a job at the Pub?  It’s good to see him interact with other characters. I enjoyed his scenes with Roman, even though the talk of Frankie and Max seemed a little random. And it also could be really interesting now that Tate knows. Days really need to start pushing their rivalry again. We need some follow up from the punch. Tying it all to Holly, to Sophia’s pregnancy, to the guys that Doug III owes money to could be good.  But yeah, wayyy too much Leo again in today’s episode. Seriously, has anything changed with this nothing character? I thought it was all Ron’s fault, but maybe Greg Rikaart is (partially) responsible for Leo being so insufferable.  And yeah seriously, Rafe needs to throw all of these people out of his house. Including Gabi

      But I do wonder who’s the mysterious voice that Gabi overheard with EJ on the night he was shot. Based on yesterday’s episode, I have a suspicion.

      Add me to the group of people who think that Brandon has improved. He has. There's no doubt about it. Especially compared to the beginning. And he's improving in a way that... it makes me think that he realizes what the issues are and is addressing them. Of course, he's no master of acting at this point... but I don't cringe as much as I did. And I've seen people in Bold... I won't even have to name names, because everyone knows who they are... who are becoming even worse than what they were offering in the first place. So... I'm happy that in BTG... people are actually blossoming and improving. It surely means that the atmosphere is creative and nurturing talent.  BUT and it's a big butt... his relationship with his husband is still so lacking and ghastly. I am craving to see more action from these guys. I want to see Smitty's character. If he has any.
