I'm doing a personal project, character analysis, 1991. I call it Roman, a Jerk or Not a Jerk? I'm on Day 15 which corresponds to 12-2-91 and so far Roman has not even been close to being a jerk, much less a male chauvinist pig or a misogynist. I can't imagine what in his 80s stuff is bad. Historically the cop & the doc were the most popular couple when Luke & Laura were off. Now when Dee & Wayne returned in '91 some people say Wayne got some really poor writing. I think you can't go by clips so I am watching full episodes.

I didn't like John for a long time but I do like him now & I consider him the best parent & grandparent of all. And he did a great job with Carrie, Eric & Sami when they weren't really his responsibility. Of course, Carrie's parents are Roman & Anna.

This started with me realizing it offends me for people to call the real historical Roman a misogynist. Real Roman, OG Roman, Roman played by Wayne Northrup was a hero, a good man.

I know we are a product of our times & that there's stuff in soapdom's past that reads totally differently now than it did then. Re-watching The Doctors every day I am aware of how differently I see it now than I saw it as a teen.

And I do think when you watch Roman in 1991 that you do have to be aware of what had happened to him in the 7 years of captivity & how absurd it was that anyone had ever believed Drake was playing Roman. Watching the scene where the whole family "meets" Real Roman in the Brady Fish Market is so amazing just how fast & completely first Shawn & then Caroline Know the truth when they see it & how hard they hug him!!

@Donna L. BridgesI think Wayne's Roman's descent into being jerk started after he immediately went on assignment after getting back to find Bo.  Leaving Marlena and his kids alone again for months.  Then his issues with Carrie and Carrie's relationship with John made him seem at the very least unbendable.  I never got the sense he tried to reconnect with his family, wife, or children in the same way after being gone for 7 years-he just expected everyone to love him the exact same way as before.  He also had a tendency to disregard and not respect Marlena's career.   I think the writing was heavily skewed towards John and towards John/Marlena's affair.  I don't think Roman is a bad guy or had unrealistic reactions to an unbelievable situation, but I also don't think he comes off great.  Especially toward the end of his run where Marlena is doing everything to save the relationship.  He had every right to leave her, but not to leave his (troubled) children for several years with no contact.

I think if you search you tube you can find Wayne/Deidre's first scenes.  I believe he scares her in her office to prove how unsafe and careless she is being.  Unless @EdibleFlowers is referring to the sleeping bag scenes were he moves into her house on the floor and I think those are available as well.  I think it would be December 1981 or early 1982.  Wayne debuted in December 81 but I can't recall if his first scenes were with Deidre.    I have never seen the slap scenes after Samantha's death.  Or if I did I don't recall.  I would assume it would be in the same month or week that Sam died though.

I’m referring to his initial scene where he shows up to her office as a patient then pretends to be the Strangler and brings out a scarf to choke her. It’s very disturbing and it’s so bizarre that they became a couple after any of that.

    • If you ever make it to the Paley Center in NYC (fka Museum of TV and Radio), in their viewing room, you can watch Days 1/1/73 featuring Denise Alexander as Susan. It’s her last month on the show before switching to GH.
    • Overall I was impressed with this week and fall out from the revealation.  I am looking forward to seeing the Nicole/Dana showdown next week.  I do wonder if June is going to be tied to Hayley.
    • I thought Adam and Sara got married? Although I do not remember any mention of her when Adam returned for Blake's weddings. But MA certainly got the short end of the stick storywise, as Marland's obsession with therapy reared it's head.
    • Didn’t Meg Bennett return to SFT as a writer in the last few years. I always wondered if they tried to get her back as Liza.
    • Millette Alexander got the short end of the stick once they killed off Joe. The Justin thing was a non-starter. Then she was briefly married to Alan's corrupt lawyer and HE was killed off. She was paired briefly with Adam and that ended because she believed Holly over Roger about the rape. Definitely, Marland had zero interest in her except as the therapist for the many, many of his female characters who needed therapy. It's not odd she left the show. One of the rare 1978 episodes on YT shows Alan going to Cedars for a physical check-up. He ends up with Sarah as his doctor. In between making mysoginistic comments about women doctors, he also openly flirts with her. It's very obvious they were chem testing Sarah and Alan. It's a really good scene. Bernau is both obnoxious and charming and Millette is amazing, trying to be pleasant and profesional without rolling her eyes at him, but at the same time maybe a LITTLE bit attracted to him. An interesting what-might-have-been. So it appears the Dobsons were actively looking for someone to pair her with, they just never found the right one for a long-term story.
    • I'm happy to read whatever you provide, @Paul Raven.

    • First, let me say I love reading all of your takes and thoughts. They always provide a different point of view... a breath of fresh air... in this sometimes stuffy topic.

You've inspired me to add my 2 cents about this product placement debacle.  I absolutely HATE the way they are doing product placement in BTG. I really hope this doesn't catch on or evolve into more and more of these moments. It's incredibly off-putting to place them in a highly dramatic moment where we are still on the emotional journey with the character. What is next - Dani spraying the house while having a nervous breakdown? It makes me not want to buy the product they're selling. LOL. That's just me.
    • I always get the vibe that Martin/Smitty have an emotional abusive relationship set up... but I doubt the show will really go there with that element given that Martin is a Dupree (and we can't have the Duprees be portrayed in a negative light), and because it's a gay male relationship.   Even though abuse in the physical or emotional sense is a huge thing in a lot of gay and lesbian relationships. The Ashley/Naomi scene reads off to me for one reason....  Ashley was talking about the new scandal without any sort of mention and/or subtext.. considering she knew both Silk Press Sheila and Eva.  I'm not sure if the writers have forgotten, if Jen Jacobs isn't able to play subtext, or what.   It's just apparent the writers do not know how to write a young white millennial couple.. and perhaps they need to get a younger white script writer to be on staff... or let the actors play around with the lines to make them more natural/realistic.
